#1087 Jeremiah 30 Can A Man Bear A Child

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. 3 For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”

4 These are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah:

5 “Thus says the Lord:
We have heard a cry of panic,
of terror, and no peace.
6 Ask now, and see,
can a man bear a child?
Why then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor?
Why has every face turned pale?
7 Alas! That day is so great
there is none like it;
it is a time of distress for Jacob;
yet he shall be saved out of it.

8 “And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and I will burst your bonds, and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him. 9 But they shall serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 “Then fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord,
nor be dismayed, O Israel;
for behold, I will save you from far away,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
11 For I am with you to save you,
declares the Lord;
I will make a full end of all the nations
among whom I scattered you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
I will discipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

12 “For thus says the Lord:
Your hurt is incurable,
and your wound is grievous.
13 There is none to uphold your cause,
no medicine for your wound,
no healing for you.
14 All your lovers have forgotten you;
they care nothing for you;
for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy,
the punishment of a merciless foe,
because your guilt is great,
because your sins are flagrant.
15 Why do you cry out over your hurt?
Your pain is incurable.
Because your guilt is great,
because your sins are flagrant,
I have done these things to you.
16 Therefore all who devour you shall be devoured,
and all your foes, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
those who plunder you shall be plundered,
and all who prey on you I will make a prey.
17 For I will restore health to you,
and your wounds I will heal,
declares the Lord,
because they have called you an outcast:
‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’

18 “Thus says the Lord:
Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt on its mound,
and the palace shall stand where it used to be.
19 Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving,
and the voices of those who celebrate.
I will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
I will make them honored, and they shall not be small.
20 Their children shall be as they were of old,
and their congregation shall be established before me,
and I will punish all who oppress them.
21 Their prince shall be one of themselves;
their ruler shall come out from their midst;
I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me,
for who would dare of himself to approach me?
declares the Lord.
22 And you shall be my people,
and I will be your God.”

23 Behold the storm of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
until he has executed and accomplished
the intentions of his mind.
In the latter days you will understand this. Jeremiah 30 ESV

Jeremiah 30 Looking Toward Restoration

25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited: A hardening in part has come to Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob. 27And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”… Romans 11: 25-27

1-3. Days are coming - And they shall have only the slightest taste of that in returning to the land, but it shall not even be as bright as the time of Solomon, when they return from Babylon, so there is a much more grand picture in view here as well. You will see it in a bit.

4-9. Concerning Israel and Judah - This would encompass all of Jacob's children, a remnant preserved from every tribe. The northern kingdom had broken off from Judah during the reign of Solomon's son, and they were turned over to Assyria for their apostasy, yet their sister Judah did not learn from this and is now under the gavel of Babylon.

Can a man bear a child - This wouldn't be a trick question back then, one wouldn't ponder how the person identifies themselves. This is a signal of great distress, primal anguish.

It is a time of distress for Jacob - This is the time of Jacob's trouble, the Great Tribulation, a time of unmatched persecution. Satan's followers were unsuccessful in eliminating the Seed, destroying the Davidic line in the time of Athaliah, and so what is left but God's messengers and His people. Herod will go after the Messiah and kill many young boys in his time, Hitler, Stalin and many others will hunt the Jews.

…21For at that time there will be great tribulation, unmatched from the beginning of the world until now, and never to be seen again. 22 If those days had not been cut short, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be cut short. 23At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it.… Matthew 24: 21-23

1And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and crying out in the pain and agony of giving birth. 3Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven royal crowns on his heads.…
…4His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky, tossing them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, ready to devour her child as soon as she gave birth. 5And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne. 6And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to be nourished for 1,260 days.… Revelation 12: 1-6

“Jeremiah is stating that before the just-mentioned promise of restoration can be fulfilled, the nation must be severely disciplined, but not to the extent of final calamity.” (Feinberg)

ii. But he shall be saved out of it: “Not from it, but yet out of it; the Lord knoweth how to deliver his.” (Trapp) The Jewish people (those not yet trusting in their Messiah) will endure this time of Jacob’s trouble and be saved out of it. In contrast, Jesus told us to pray to escape these things (Luke 21:36), and Jesus promised His people that they would be kept from the very hour of calamity that comes upon the earth (Revelation 3:10). - E W

I will break his yoke - This is a loaded statement, but Jacob (Israel), at some point, will no longer be under the rule of a foreign power, nor even under it's own broken rule. It is for sin that they are being sent away, crushed by Babylon, Assyria and others, but God has had a great and sovereign plan to conquer sin from the beginning. He will crush the head.

Serve the Lord their God and David their king - Now keep in mind, David has been dead for some time, this is well after the splitting up of the kingdoms. God here reminds them of His seed, His covenant with David. This points even beyond the return of the captives from Babylon, for there was never another king who sat from David's line, only local figure heads under the rule of a Tidal monarch. Even today, Israel has a tiny state, not to the extent of her former boundaries, and so this looks forward still. Now lets go back on this, take a look at the Davidic covenant. From a Righteous Branch:

Write...childless. Jeconiah did have offspring (1 Chronicles 3: 17-18), but he was reckoned childless in the sense that he had no sons who would reign ("sitting on the throne..."). The curse continued in his descendants down to Joseph, the husband of Mary. How could Jesus then be the Messiah when his father was this curse? It was because Joseph was not involved in the blood line of Jesus since Jesus was virgin born (Matt. 1:12). Jesus' blood right to the throne of David came through Mary from Nathan, Solomon's brother, not Solomon (Jeconiah's line) thus bypassing this curse (Luke 3:31-32). Cf. Jer. 36:30. - J Mac Study Bible

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” 2 Samuel 7: 12-16

…11After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities. 12Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53: 11-12

Whom I will raise up for them - Now some think this is a literal raising up of David, the son of Jesse, to sit upon the throne of Israel in the Millennial kingdom, while others think this all to be fulfilled in Christ. I will just say, and I think many of them would agree, that the former cannot happen without the latter. David was a sinner and Christ had to die for him as well.

…43Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says: 44‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’ 45So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”… Matthew 22: 43-45

10-11. I will not make a full end - God plans to make a full end of the nations to which his people have been scattered, but not Israel.

I will discipline you in just measure - Like their brother David, though he remained God's chosen, he also knew the rod of His displeasure. He did not rein in his lust, and this cost him much, the death of his son from Bathsheba, quarreling of his other sons, rape, murder, and a kingdom torn apart at times. His son visited his excesses, and what his father did too much, Solomon made it seem little. Absalom tried to take the kingdom, went in to his father's concubines; there was much pain and embarrassment. Whom the lord loveth he chaseneth.

12-17. Your hurt is incurable - It is the pronouncement of death over a body, no medicine will fix this. The doctor has yelled clear a dozen times, but look, already the corpse begins to stink. There are no steps for you to take, no one to take up your case.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.… Ephesians 2: 1-2

All your lovers have forgotten you - The nations they went to for help ended up letting them down. Assyria wanted more, Egypt was not strong enough, and throughout history Israel's alliances have been disappointing, but none so bad as when antichrist appears.

Why do you cry out over your hurt - Everyone cries for that reason, but why do you not mourn over the cause. Your guilt is great, your sins are flagrant.

Why do you cry about your affliction: “And not rather for thy sins? Cry not perii, I have died, but peccavi; I have sinned, not, I am undone; but, I have done very foolishly.” (Trapp)

All who prey on you I will make a prey - The greatest sense of mourning and acknowledgement of guilt comes from Israel in the latter days, looking back upon the One they pierced. Isaiah 53:5

“Because his people have undergone judgment and have acknowledged their guilt, God pronounces retaliation in kind on their enemies.” (Feinberg)

18-24. The city... and the palace shall stand where it used to be - Israel restored, with a Davidic king, palace and the city of Jerusalem. This awaits the time of Christ's Millennial reign, where David may rule in part, over a district, as the Disciples also are given jobs as the elders.

I will punish all who oppress them - They have come under God's roof, by way of His grace through Christ Jesus, His Son and Sacrifice. As reconciled children, He now takes up their cause directly.

Their prince shall be one of themselves - He shall grow up before them.

…10He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. 11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—… John 1: 10-12

Who would dare of himself to approach me - Our God is a consuming fire. To approach Him, means that this One that does is not only a king, but also a priest. We have a high priest, and need no other.

“Who but my Son Christ durst do it, or was fit to do it? He is a super-excellent person, as is imported by this Mi-hu-ze, Who this he?” (Trapp)

ii. Who pledged his heart: “Our Lord with all his heart desired to do this: he ‘engaged his heart’ to perform it. Before all worlds his master purpose was to approach unto God as man’s representative…His heart was occupied with love to God and love to man, and he could not rest till he had restored the broken concord between these divided ones.” (Spurgeon)

And you shall be My people, and I will be your God - Because of the One Who can only approach of Himself, He Who knew no sin, became sin for us. Death could not hold Him though, because the wages of sin is death, and He was without sin, a perfect substitute, infinitely holy. In Him we have reconciliation, peace, access to God.

In the latter days you will understand this - Lest you think this is all done, there is much of it still to come. A loaded chapter, and I did not go into great detail about some significant things, but I know they will come up again, and I will cover more from those angles.

…37“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by,” they told him. 38So he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39Those who led the way admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”… Luke 18: 37-39
