#1136 Ezekiel 8 Part 3 Tammuz, Apostate Priests and Hybridization

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. 15 Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? You will see still greater abominations than these.”

16 And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord. And behold, at the entrance of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs to the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east, worshiping the sun toward the east. 17 Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations that they commit here, that they should fill the land with violence and provoke me still further to anger? Behold, they put the branch to their nose. 18 Therefore I will act in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.” Ezekiel 8: 14-18 ESV

Ezekiel 8 More Abominations

14So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life. 15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3: 14-15

There sat women weeping for Tammuz - Tammuz or Dumuzi was a Mesopotamian god, who started out as a pastoral deity, providing good pasture for his followers which were shepherding people. Over time and in different areas he picked up new names, like Adonis in Greece, and in Assyria he added agriculture to his resume. His consort was Inanna, also called Ishtar, who, according to legend, sent Tammuz to live in the underworld. His sister eventually finds him there and Ishtar allows that they can split the time in the underworld between the two. So why are the women weeping? This is one of the rites of his followers, to mourn his death each year, starting around July in Assyria, as the flower withers from the heat, and then in the fall after the wheat is harvested and ground, marking his death and time in the underworld through the winter. So every fall he goes to the underworld and every spring he rises from the dead, and his followers remember his death, hoping for a good harvest. It is one of the many nature cults tied to basic human material needs for good crops and healthy livestock. These cults can be traced all the way back to Babel

The cult of Tammuz centred around two yearly festivals—one celebrating his marriage to the goddess Inanna, the other lamenting his death at the hands of demons from the netherworld. During the 3rd Dynasty of Ur (c. 2112–c. 2004 BCE) in the city of Umma (modern Tell Jokha), the marriage of the god was dramatically celebrated in February–March, Umma’s Month of the Festival of Tammuz. During the Isin-Larsa period (c. 2004–c. 1792 BCE), the texts relate that in the marriage rite the king actually took on the identity of the god and thus, by consummating the marriage with a priestess incarnating the goddess, magically fertilized and fecundated all of nature for the year. - Encyclopedia Britannica

“The worship of Tammuz came from Babylon through the Phoenicians (Canaanites) and then the Greeks. Tammuz, mentioned nowhere else in the Scriptures, was the Babylonian Dumuzi, beloved of Ishtar, and is to be identified with the Greek Adonis.” (Feinberg)

iii. “In the seasonal mythological cycle, he died early in the fall when vegetation withered. His revival by the wailing of Ishtar was marked by the buds of spring and the fertility of the land. Such renewal was encouraged and celebrated by licentious fertility festivals.” (Alexander)

It is interesting to look back to Genesis, and it is a huge testament to the sovereignty of God, that He can announce the seed of the woman, which can be traced through the genealogies of the Bible, and the pictures He provides of redemptive history. It is mind boggling to announce a plan like that, right it down in a book, unhidden from the eyes and ears of your enemy, yet everything continues according to plan. He announces the Seed when Satan must think its the end, the wages of sin is death and they ate of the tree that they were told not eat from. They now realize their nakedness, their innocence is gone, and what does God do? He kills animals, takes their skins and covers Adam and Eve. When death does come to the planet, as God's justice in the form of the flood, He rescues 8 people alive by warning them in advance and having them build an ark. He calls Abraham out of the midst of a pagan people and tells him he will be the father of a great nation. He provides a ram in the place of Abraham's son Isaac, Isaac who was born to Sarah, who was past the age of child bearing. We see the redemptive story early on, but we also see it attacked. Tammuz and all other false religions are such an attack. Satan doesn't just go after the seed physically like Pharaoh during Moses' time, Athaliah during the time of the later kings of Judah, or Herod during Jesus' time. He also offers a counterfeit, which God or gods would you prefer?

There are parallels between this myth and the story of the resurrection of Jesus. Like Tammuz, Jesus also died and rose from the dead. Jesus was also divine. Beyond these similarities, however, the story of Tammuz and Jesus are rather different. One main difference is the reason for their deaths. Jesus died for the sins of humanity while Tammuz was killed out of rage by his lover. It is true that Tammuz was killed as part of a sacrifice, but it was not something that he did willingly. Jesus, on the other hand, willingly went to the cross to be crucified if the gospel text is taken at face value. Another difference is that Tammuz appears to only save people from physical starvation and death. He did not save people from sin or judgement for disobedience to God or the Gods.

Another difference is the kind of life that Tammuz offered versus what Jesus offered. Tammuz offered material prosperity in the present life, healthy flocks and plentifully crops. Jesus, however, offered spiritual renewal and eternal life after a final, bodily resurrection. Ancient Christians believed, and modern Christians still believe, that one day the saints will rise from the dead in the same manner that Jesus did. Worshipers of Tammuz believed that they might have a materially abundant life on earth because of their deity, but they would not rise from the dead like Tammuz. They would spend eternity as fluttering ghosts in a shadowy underworld. Tammuz appears to be much more limited in scope than Jesus in terms of what he offered. Tammuz was primarily a nature deity. - Ancient Origins

The God of the Bible is setting Himself apart from these gods, in that they are cool with your practices while the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob calls it a sin. Tammuz is great for those who are there only for the fish and the bread, but Jesus says there is more than this life, more than just food, and that if you love your life you will lose it, but if you die to yourself, take up your cross and follow Him, you can have life everlasting.

Tammuz offers all the material things like the Jesus of the prosperity gospel. He was killed for the honor of his mother, so she seems to be greater, like Mary of the Roman Catholic cult, that Jesus points people to his mom. She is a mediator and men are sent to her. The Roman Catholic Mary is none other than Ishtar, the Queen of Heaven. Read also in Queen of Heaven Jeremiah 44. It is also interesting that Roman Catholic priests are vowed to celibacy.

Unfortunately for the rest of the universe, while Ishtar was dead there was no sexual activity or procreation of any kind. Ea saw the problem with this and bartered a deal. Ishtar could return to the land of the living, but she had to find another soul to take her place in the underworld. The replacement could not be someone who was mourning her death. She could find no one, god or human, until she came to her own throne room where Tammuz sat, dressed in fine robes instead of the more appropriate sackcloth and ashes. - CompellingTruth.Org

Jesus of the Bible calls Himself the way, meaning there is no other which He makes clear, the truth, meaning all others are liars and imposters, and the life, because outside of Him there is only judgment leading to death. He says, no man comes to the Father but by Me. One way.

…23At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. 24For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible. 25See, I have told you in advance.… Matthew 24: 23-25

The Greeks, who never met a foreign god they couldn't adapt, also had their Tammuz in Adonis. It was said that Aphrodite arranged a king to impregnate his daughter. It's unclear if Aphrodite fell in love with the beautiful son or if she felt guilty for her part in his conception, but she put him in a box and gave him to her sister Persephone, the goddess of the underworld, for safe keeping. Persephone opened the box and also fell in love. The sisters fought over Adonis until Zeus declared Adonis had to spend four months with Persephone, four months with Aphrodite, and four months with whomever he chose (he chose Aphrodite). Either Artemis or Ares (accounts vary) sent a boar that killed Adonis. Aphrodite was so consumed by grief that Zeus allowed Adonis to continue to spend part of the year among the living.

The Egyptians had a different take in Osiris and Isis. Isis was a benevolent goddess who was devoted to her husband/brother Osiris. Osiris' brother Set killed him in an attempt to take his throne. In one story, Set tore Osiris into pieces, Isis found most of the pieces and, with the help of a golden phallus, brought him back to life long enough to impregnate her with Horus. In a slightly different version, Isis found Osiris' intact body in a lead-sealed box (the origin of the sarcophagus) which had been absorbed by a tamarind tree being used as a palace pillar. Isis brought Osiris back to life and became pregnant with Horus, but Set found Osiris and killed him again, tearing his body into pieces. Isis found the pieces, wrapped them in cloth, and buried him properly. Horus eventually defeated Set. The gods were so moved by Isis' devotion, they made Osiris the god of the underworld. To reflect his resurrection and second death, he also became the god of the Nile (whose ebbs and flows bring crops), reincarnation, and the life-and-death cycle of agriculture. - Compellingtruth.org

Were about 25 men with their backs turned to the temple of the Lord - In the inner court where only priest could go, these men had their backs turned away from the place of the true God and were worshiping the sun. Remember earlier in the chapter they acted as though God had abandoned them, and His glory is leaving the temple, but rather than repent of their sin which is the cause, they make their appeal to another god, yet it is the sun which the real God created. It's not that God wasn't able to help them, but that He would not do what they said, not climb into their box, not be the genie in the lamp. He hates sin and they love it, so rather than repent they invent.

These 25 represent the 24 orders of the priest plus the high priest. - J Mac Study Bible

The abominations that they commit here - Of all people these priest knew, and this is outright, open rebellion and apostasy.

…18or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below. 19When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon and stars— all the host of heaven— do not be enticed to bow down and worship what the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you are today.… Deuteronomy 4: 18-20

4Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests second in rank, and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. And he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel. 5Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests ordained by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem— those who had burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven. 6He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem, and there he burned it, ground it to powder, and threw its dust on the graves of the common people.… 2 Kings 23: 4-6

…25if I have rejoiced in my great wealth because my hand had gained so much, 26if I have beheld the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, 27so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,…

Should fill the land with violence - Like Nimrod they would stoop to what God hates so that they could be mighty, even sacrificing their own children to Molech, stealing from widows and using orphans. The stubbornness is probably the most amazing thing. They were warned over and over again by the prophets and the priests knew this from Scripture. They trusted in ancestry, being related to Abraham, in having the temple and rituals, now they are putting their hope in other gods, idols, created things. It is the same cycle over and over.

…10And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence. 12And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.…
13Then God said to Noah, “The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth. 14Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15And this is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.… Genesis 6: 10-15

…24Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen. 26For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.…
…27Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,… Romans 1: 24-29

They put the branch to their nose - Now this is an admittedly difficult line, but look at the context. In it's most basic sense, they mock God, they thumb the nose so to speak. They have turned their backs on Him to worship the sun, exchanged God's glory for a lesser light, a created light. But I also want to look at the word branch, because given that they know of God's promise of His seed, of the Righteous Branch that will come forth out of the line of David, Messiah, even if not directly making this connection in their hearts, are they not rejecting God's way?

Variations of the sun god, Egypt's and other Middle Eastern versions would probably be the most common to Israel.

Egypt - Ra , also Atum (finisher of the world) as the sun sets.

Aztec - Huitzilopochtli (god of sun and war)

Brazilian - Guaraci

Incan - Inti

Mayan - Ah kin

Armenian - Ar or Arev (Armenian people are children of the sun)

Buddhist - Surya

Chinese - Doumu (sun goddess) and Yu Yi (god that carries the sun across the sky)

…9I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness. 11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.… John 10: 9-11

4Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.… Matthew 24: 4-6

#1135 Ezekiel 8 Part 2 Loathsome State

In the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I sat in my house, with the elders of Judah sitting before me, the hand of the Lord God fell upon me there. 2 Then I looked, and behold, a form that had the appearance of a man. Below what appeared to be his waist was fire, and above his waist was something like the appearance of brightness, like gleaming metal. 3 He put out the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head, and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the gateway of the inner court that faces north, where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy. 4 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the vision that I saw in the valley.

5 Then he said to me, “Son of man, lift up your eyes now toward the north.” So I lifted up my eyes toward the north, and behold, north of the altar gate, in the entrance, was this image of jealousy. 6 And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel are committing here, to drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see still greater abominations.”

7 And he brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked, behold, there was a hole in the wall. 8 Then he said to me, “Son of man, dig in the wall.” So I dug in the wall, and behold, there was an entrance. 9 And he said to me, “Go in, and see the vile abominations that they are committing here.” 10 So I went in and saw. And there, engraved on the wall all around, was every form of creeping things and loathsome beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel. 11 And before them stood seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them. Each had his censer in his hand, and the smoke of the cloud of incense went up. 12 Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in his room of pictures? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 He said also to me, “You will see still greater abominations that they commit.”

And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.” Ezekiel 8 ESV

Ezekiel 8: 5-13  Abominations in the Temple

This is a great break down of Baal worship from Precept Austin, and I think it's important with a book like Ezekiel, especially for the reader that is just starting here, to get some of this background. We will try to get a historical break down with each of the different gods, plus trace back to origin.

Baal is a Semitic word that literally means "lord," "ownership,", "husband", "authority," or "control." Local deities were called Baal and were associated with portions of land as the gods of the earth. The attraction of Baal worship for the Hebrews went beyond immorality. It also included the promise of agricultural, animal, and human fertility. These fertility cults used sacred prostitutes, sexual activity, and imitative magic to insure fertility in every area of life.

Three basic elements of the theology of Baal worship enhanced its attractiveness.

Relation to Cycles of Nature.
Canaanite worship was closely linked with the cycle of the seasons. The people had observed that the seasons of the year followed a predictable pattern. In the fall vegetation became dormant and withered, then died in the winter months. Each spring vegetation revived, and in the summer it flourished. Also during the dormant winter months rains came and watered the earth. The rain was associated with the fertility of the land and the resurrection of vegetation in the spring. Rituals were performed to entreat Baal to send rain and restore the fertility of the land. These involved the dying and rising of their god with appropriate laments and rejoicing (cf. Ezek 8:14). Thus the fertility cult, with its sacred prostitutes, was employed to insure the fertility of the land for another year. Such foreign practices in the name of religion and worship appealed to the young Hebrew men when the Moabite girls first introduced them to it, and it continued when they entered Canaan.

Immorality
Baal worship not only approved of but also encouraged immorality. The rituals of Baal worship included sexual intercourse, considered an imitative act that invited the rain to fertilize the ground. The Book of Hosea is an example of the evils and tragedy of Baal worship. Hosea, a devout man, married Gomer, a woman from a background of Baal worship (Hos 1:1-11 ). Soon Gomer returned to her old ways and left Hosea and their children for a life of prostitution ( Hos 3:1ff .). Like Gomer, the people of Israel exhibited only a token commitment to Yahweh ( Hos 4-7 ). They worshiped Baal, believing that sexual acts with sacred prostitutes would insure fruitfulness and productivity. Israel, like Gomer, had forsaken its true lover and faithful husband. As a consequence of Israel's adultery, God promised judgment (Hos 8-11). Ezekiel soundly condemned the physical and spiritual adultery of his day (see Ezek 8:1-9:11; Ezek 22:1-31 ).

Polytheism
Israel's neighbors were polytheistic. This was a constant encouragement for the Hebrews to adopt a more syncretistic approach to religious faith and practice. Hosea stressed God's demand for exclusive worship: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but me, no Savior except me" ( Hos 13:4 ). Ezekiel's emphasis on the exclusiveness of worshiping Yahweh and no other gods came in a constantly recurring phrase, "Then you shall know the LORD your God." 27 This phrase was used in association with judgment passages to warn that God would make himself known through the chastening and judgment of the exile.

Baal worship was popular and difficult to eradicate from Israel because it fed on the people's lust, fear, and the desire to conform to their neighbors. It was encouraged by natural concerns for food, farms, families, and flocks, believing that Baal could help them insure the best in each of these areas. By embracing polytheistic forms of worship, the Hebrews conformed to the standards and life-style of their neighbors and thus created the social, moral, and spiritual problems that brought about their judgment. - Precept Austin

Lift up your eyes toward the north - The orientation of the temple would put the Bronze altar to the East and this would be north at the top of this drawing.

This image of jealousy - There is an idol, and more important than what or who is doing it is that it is being done at all. It is always an affront and an abomination, but here it is in the Lord's house, and Ezekiel is witnessing the current state of Jerusalem. SEE Previous post for Image of Jealousy.

To drive me far from my sanctuary - Look what they are doing, this is no longer My house. Ezekiel sees the glory of the God of Israel there in verse 4, but these people are ignoring that to worship something else. The temple tells of God's redemptive plan, everything there should remind them of their history with the One, True God, it should all reflect His glory, but they have brought in idols.

1When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. 2The priests were unable to enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled it. 3When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD: “For He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.”… 2 Chronicles 7: 1-3

…15Then the LORD appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent. 16And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these people will rise up and prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them. 17On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is no longer with us?’… Deuteronomy 31: 15-17

15Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had compassion on them and on His dwelling place. 16But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words and scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was stirred up beyond remedy. 17So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary, sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar,… 2 Chronicles 36: 14-17

But you will see still greater abominations -

Abominations (detestable, loathsome) (08441)(toebah) refers to an abominable custom or thing. Abomination. Loathsome. Detestable thing. Something or someone who is loathsome and abhorrent. Toebah is translated in the Septuagint with the noun anomia which describes a general state of wrong lawlessness, wickedness, iniquity. - Precept Austin

Matthew Henry notes that "Where there is one abomination it will be found that there are many more. Sins do not go alone."

So I dug in the wall, and behold there was an entrance - Nothing is outside of God's omniscience, and yet these thought they did this in secret. God is making known even to Ezekiel now what He has known all along. It is a strange cult, like a scene from the movie "Eyes Wide Shut", and the prophet is being invited by God to look upon the evidence, the current state of Jerusalem.

When hypocrites screen themselves behind the wall of an external profession, and with it think to conceal their wickedness from the eye of the world and carry on their designs the more successfully, it is hard for them to manage it with so much art by that there is some hole or other left in the wall, something that betrays them, to those who look diligently, not to be what they pretend to be. The ass's ears in the fable appeared from under the lion's skin. This hole in the wall Ezekiel made wider, and behold a door, v. 8. This door he goes in by into the treasury, or some of the apartments of the priests, and sees the wicked abominations that they do there, v. 9. Note, Those that would discover the mystery of iniquity in others, or in themselves, must accomplish a diligent search; for Satan has his wiles, and depths, and devices, which we should not be ignorant of, and the heart is deceitful above all things; in the examining of it therefore we are concerned to be very strict. - Matthew Henry

Engraved on the wall all around - Here they had pictures and also idols, but these were also of things that were called unclean. It draws upon the Egyptian cult practices of animal worship which would be very familiar to them.

Bastet was the Egyptian cat goddess

Anmit or Ammut was a demoness goddess "devourer of the dead" who had a crocodiles face, a lion's mane and chest, with a hippos hind quarters.

Khepri or Khepra was a scarab faced god, who represented the rising sun, creation and renewal of life.

“This piece of idolatry the Jews had learned of the Egyptians, who madly worshipped oxen, asses, goats, dogs, cats, serpents, crocodiles, the bird ibis, &c.” (Trapp)

…22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another.… Romans 1: 22-24

Before them stood seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel - This is interesting because it doesn't call out all their names, but they would be recognizable to Ezekiel and he is physically with other elders in Babylon. Jaazaniah son of Shaphan is with them, and his name is important enough to bring up, and I agree with the commentators that this probably makes it clear in Ezekiel's mind and his listeners' how deep this problem goes, how high the corruption is. No matter who is doing it though, again, it is an abomination, regardless, but these are leaders, and when God judges a nation He gives them wicked rulers.

Elders “refers to the lay leaders who had risen to prominence in Jerusalem after the deportation of Jehoiachin and his officials (2 K. 24:12–16). These were obviously important men in the city.” (Block)

ii. Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan: “Shaphan is probably to be identified with Josiah’s secretary of state (2 Kgs 22:3), and Ahikam, another of Shaphan’s sons, was an influential supporter of Jeremiah (Jer. 26:24). Clearly Jaazaniah was the black sheep of a worthy family.” (Taylor)

Doing in the dark - Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil.

…13When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. 14For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14

The Lord has forsaken the land - No, God was honoring His covenant with them; they had left Him for other gods, and this is not the first time or the first warning. God has been what we can only see and call patient. Look at Deuteronomy 31: 15-17 written above again, and we are now to this part:
On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is no longer with us?’ Deut 31:17

You will see still greater abominations that they commit - Continued in the next episode.

#1134 Ezekiel 8 Part 1 A Cautionary Note

And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.” Ezekiel 8 ESV

Ezekiel 8: 1-4 Vision

With the elders of Judah sitting before me - This is in Babylon, and these are elders that were taken during the captivity. Ezekiel was in line to be a priest back home in Jerusalem, but God has made him a prophet here. There are still false prophets in both Babylon and Judah, that claim destruction of Jerusalem and the temple is not coming, but these elders seem willing to listen to Ezekiel. Some of the false prophets had sent word back to Jerusalem, asking that Jeremiah be shut up, but this prophet is in Babylon saying the same things as Jeremiah. The other, false prophets, were saying that the captivity would only be two years, but Jeremiah was telling them to settle in for the long haul, it would be 70 years.

…27So now, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28For he has sent to us in Babylon, claiming: Since the exile will be lengthy, build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat their produce.’” 29(Zephaniah the priest, however, had read this letter to Jeremiah the prophet.)… Jeremiah 29: 27-29

The hand of the Lord fell upon me there - This starts a long vision that runs from chapters 8-11.

A form that had the appearance of a man - This is similar to the figure in Ezekiel 1. Note that he is in a vision, and in there he uses the terms form and appearance, as he did before with the word like, as it is not the glory of God, but the likeness of that glory. God has chosen to manifest the likeness of His glory in the image of a man.

14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.… Colossians 1: 14-16

He put out the form of a hand - His language is so careful; we would do well to take such care. I believe this to be a Theophany, yet look at the tenderness he treats it with, not a hand, but the "form" of a hand.

And the Spirit lifted me between earth and heaven - Physically he is sitting before the elders in Babylon, but spiritually he is going to take a journey in this vision which will carry him to Jerusalem.

"Brought me" describes a supernatural "flight" which touched down not in Tel Aviv Airport like El Al arrivals do today, but in the Temple Mount itself! I would call this a "first class" ticket! The details of Ezekiel's visions recorded in chapters 8-11 were seen only by the prophet, not the elders (cf Ezek 11:24-25). Note also that Ezekiel's visions are not a description of Judah's past sins but are representative of her spiritual condition that existed at that time - Precepts Austin

Where was the seat of the image of jealousy - There is an image, probably right outside the temple, that is provoking God's anger. Now some think this to be an image of the Queen of Heaven, which is quite likely, since Jeremiah, Ezekiel's contemporary, dealt quite extensively with this in his book, pointing out this heresy which continues today in Roman Catholicism.

“The word ‘image’ is semel, which occurs elsewhere only in Deut. 4.16 (where it is translated ‘figure’) and in 2 Chron. 33.7,15, of a special ‘idol’ set up by King Manasseh in the Temple. Although this idol was later removed, Ezekiel’s use of the word may mean that a replica, if not the original, was put back. The word also occurs in Phoenician writings.” (Wright)

…17Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven; they pour out drink offerings to other gods to provoke Me to anger. 19But am I the One they are provoking? declares the LORD. Is it not themselves they spite, to their own shame?… Jeremiah 7: 17-19

…13Rather, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, and chop down their Asherah poles. 14For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.… Exodus 34: 13-15

And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there - God's glory was in the temple, but sadly we will see that glory depart as the vision progresses, but we will also see why.

…7to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house. 8I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols. 9Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”… Isaiah 42: 7-9
