#1512 Tongue Tied and Twisted 1 Corinthians 14 Part 2

Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and encouragement. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 But I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. And greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates, so that the church may receive edification. 1 Corinthians 14: 1-5 LSB

1 Corinthians 14: 2

Warning - To hopefully avoid some confusion here, let it be understood that these posts are part of an ongoing conversation between me and a friend, who is Pentecostal but who I also believe to be a brother in Christ. There is no disrespect of people intended. This will include posts #1511 to #1515.

For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God - I am going to include an excerpt from a J Mac sermon on this passage below the other quotes, one that use to make me angry, but taken in light of the correction that is taking place here, and the culture, I think in view of the whole counsel of God what MacArthur points out holds much merit. Staton's quote below even allows that it is a known language, but unknown to the hearers, which brings it to the question of edification and order. This the Apostle has dealt with in the prior chapters, but continues in verses 3-12 here, with a summation in verse 12 that reads: So also you, since you are zealous for [g]spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. Another thing to consider here is Utley's comment below, being that whatever God does Satan tries to counterfeit, just like Pharaoh's magicians, using trickery and the occult, were able to counterfeit the miracles that the Holy Spirit performed through Moses. I think as we go through the chapter we will be able to identify many instances where the Holy Spirit is actually slandered by assigning to Him works that are not His own ie disorderly, done for self edification (ego). Utley sights Delphi which was a place of worship in the Greco/Roman world, a place with practices very well known to the Corinthians. People would go there to inquire of an oracle, a woman would speak in tongue, singular, because all babbling, gibberish, falls under the same vain repetition, undiscernible. She would mumble or babble and then another would interpret, in other words, supposedly take her baby talk and put it into tongues, a known, discernable language. The more I read this the more it reminds me of other vestiges, pagan practices that have entered the church from the mystery religions. I will give you an example. The practice of goddess worship is discussed in the OT in Jeremiah, and it has infiltrated the Roman Catholic Church to where it is a major part of her identity and traditions. The pope that was shot some years back even cried out, Mother Mary, save me. She is seen as a co-redeemer. When I discuss this with Catholics they refer me not to the word of God but to their dogma and traditions, much like the Pharisees held up the writings of the scribes. Another example is having such a practice, like many even in reformed circles, holding to infant baptism. It is an old vestige of Roman Catholicism, a church that is now firmly a cult, but a tradition that some of my brothers still try to hold. You see we have this thing we do in our denomination, and they will say, "don't throw the baby out with the bath water", so I will say, "show me the baby." So now they believe this thing because they practice it, and it is a seemingly good experience, it doesn't feel bad, yet they are reformers who also say they believe in Sola Scriptura, so in order to show me the baby they have to go back to the Scriptures to find support for something that they want to believe, and they select this:

…33At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized. 34Then he brought them into his home and set a meal before them. So he and all his household rejoiced that they had come to believe in God. 35When daylight came, the magistrates sent their officers with the order: “Release those men.”… Acts 16: 33-35

From that they insist that all his household must include that there were infants. Well, no, it doesn't have to mean that, and I don't think that my opinion or anyone else's matters, only God's intent. If we followed their logic in verse 33 where I still can't see the baby, then I guess we must for the sake of consistency apply this same reasoning to verse 34, and so the baby had come to believe in God. Their proof of argument becomes a proof for believer's baptism. It is all like Tootsie roll theology, where whatever it is I think I see becomes a Tootsie roll to me. I think the danger here is people trying to use this passage to support a form of tongues which is really a tongue, akin to pagan babbling ecstatic speech, when this is actually written as a correction for those doing so but also for those who were putting too high of an emphasis on the actual gift. I will stop here and leave some quotes and the excerpt from MacArthur.

Bell - Language is an agreement between people that certain sounds have certain meanings.

Staton - A person who speaks in a foreign language cannot communicate to others, for they do not understand him. Only God understands what this person is saying (1 Corinthians)

Some think Paul is referring not to human languages but to "ecstatic utterances," but that does not fit the context for later he states that these tongues can be interpreted (1 Cor 14:27-28+). Paul also states later that the speaker himself may be able to act as an interpreter (1 Cor 12:5, 13)

Utley suggests that "Tongues at Corinth seem to be unknown, articulated sounds. At Delphi one special person (usually a woman) would utter inarticulate sounds, then another would interpret these for the ones present. This procedure seems to parallel the experience of “tongues” at Corinth. - Precept Austin

Listen. It’s amazing to me that the modern Charismatic Movement falls short at this very point. They repeat the Corinthian error, and they teach that the essential use of tongues is as a private prayer language to God. That is just what Paul is condemning here. He is saying, “You have missed the point. The point is that gifts are to speak to men. But yours are some kind of communion with a god, and nobody knows what you’re saying, and you’re speaking in pagan mysteries.”

God doesn’t want to be talked to like that. It was never God’s intention to be addressed in some speech incomprehensible to the speaker. Go through the Epistles and take out every prayer prayed in the Epistles. And then when you’re done, check every single prayer in the entire Bible, and then check every prayer that Jesus ever prayed, and then check every single thing Jesus ever said about prayer and see if you find any word, anywhere, anytime that suggests that it ever should be unintelligible. You’ll never find it.

In fact, Jesus said the exact opposite. Matthew chapter 6 and verse 7. Listen to this: “When you pray, use not meaningless repetitions,” – watch this – “as the pagans do.” And you know what the phrase there, the word is? Meaningless repetition, battalogeō. Logeō is the word “to speak,” from which we get the word logos, which means word. And the prefix is batta. And batta is not even a word, it is what we call in English – some of you English people remember this – onomatopoeia, remember that?

Do you know what an onomatopoeiatic thing is? Like we say a bee goes “bzzz,” or a zipper goes “zip,” or the plane goes “whoosh.” That’s not a word, that’s what’s called onomatopoeia. It’s kind of a figure of speech.

Well, battah isn’t a word either. What He’s really saying – the literal Greek is, “When you pray,” – He says – “when you pray” – in Matthew 6:7 – “don’t say, ‘Battah, battah, battah,’ – or – “don’t go to God with ‘whoosh, bzzz, zip.’” That’s the whole idea. That is not the kind of communication that God is interested in, that is what the pagans do. In other words, even in Jesus’ time, Jesus recognized a sort of stammering, stuttering gibberish being offered by pagans to their gods, and He says, “That is exactly what I do not wish you to do when you pray to the Father.”

“Always we are to pray intelligibly. Always we are to pray with the understanding,” says Paul. “Always, we are to understand what we say and to speak clearly to God.”

When Jesus went into the garden to pray to the Father, He didn’t talk in some heavenly language. Why should you? When Deity communed with Deity, it was spoken in a language that was clear. When Jesus stood by the grave of Lazarus about to raise him from the dead, He prayed; and John heard every word he prayed and wrote it down in just the way He said it; it was clear. You study John 17, you listen to the private prayer between Jesus and the Father, it’s all very clear, translated beautifully into English from the original language.

The carnal Corinthians, however, like current Charismatics, I’m afraid, with their desire for the showy, and the attention-getting, and the ego-building, and the emotionalistic gift of tongues were using it as a badge of spirituality, and they were saying, “Oh, I have reached such a spiritual plateau. I can now talk to the eternal God in my own private language.”

Beloved, that is pure paganism, pure paganism. And so he says, “You have missed the whole point. You don’t speak to men with the true gift, you’re speaking to a god in some kind of mystery.” And the mysteries that they believed were some secrets, some little hidden secrets that only the initiated would know. And you only got those when you got into your ecstasy, and you went out of your body and you connected up with your god, and then you got these secrets, see.

Beloved, you know something? Everybody in the church is initiated. Everybody in the church has all the mysteries – right? – no secrets. “So” – he says – “you missed the point. Tongues don’t minister to people, not the way you do it – not your tongues, not your languages – because no one even knows what you’re saying. But” – verse 3 – “he that prophesies speaks to men.” You see?

“That’s what I want you to do, because you’ll speak to men; and three things will happen: edification, exhortation, and consolation. You will speak the word of God. And you know what’ll happen? Boy, things will take place in their lives. They will be built up, first of all. Secondly, they will be encouraged to a new kind of behavior; and, thirdly, people will be comforted in their agonies and their hurts. That’s what I want you to do. When you come together, I want to hear the word of God proclaimed, not battah, battah, battah.”

Verse 4: “He that speaks in an tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church.” Which is better? Which is better? What’s Paul trying to say? What’s the point of the whole chapter? Edify – what? – the church. Edify the church. Edify the church.

Edifying yourself is not the point. Listen, beloved, you were never given any spiritual gift for yourself, never, never. And if a person takes a spiritual gift and turns it to himself, he has prostituted the gift – that’s right – because it’s for others. It’s to build the body.

You say, “Well, it says right here, John, ‘You speak in an unknown tongue you edify yourself.’” Yeah, but you don’t edify the church, and that’s the whole point: you don’t edify the church.

You say, “But if it’s translated, you edify the church.” All right, then it was the gift of interpretation that edified, not the gift of tongues. The gift of tongues is useless to edify the church – right? – because nobody knew what you’re saying. That’s what he says to the Corinthians. “With all of that going on, even if the real gift happened to be used, even if somebody popped up with the real thing, it wouldn’t edify anybody in and of itself, it would have to be translated.” That’s what he says at the end of verse 5, “except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.”

And you know what’s wonderful? When the true gift was used, and when it was used as a sign, and when God did want to use the true gift, and it happened to be used with some Christians there, God would always have somebody interpret so that it would not go without meaning to the church; because even when the true gift was used which couldn’t edify, God had the gift of interpretation so that it would edify, because God didn’t want anything going on in the church that didn’t edify and build up. But the way the Corinthians were doing it was chaotic; and they had determined that just in and of itself, it would edify the church; and it won’t. And when people do it for their own self sake, they are trying to edify themselves.

And you know something? That’s a second perversion. Your gift was not only meant for men, not God; secondly, it was meant for men, not you, see, not you. And yet Donald Gee, a well-known Charismatic, says, “The revealed purpose of the gift of tongues is chiefly devotional, and we do well to emphasize the fact.” And Larry Christenson says, “One speaks in tongues, for the most part, in his private devotions. This is by far its most important use and value.” End quote.

We see that is the very opposite of what Paul is saying. Number one, he is saying, “Your gift is not to speak to God.” And number two, “Your gift is not for you.” You see, the whole point is it’s for them, it’s for them, it’s for them. And so if you seek to edify God, you’re out of line. If you seek to edify yourself, you’re out of line. And there’s almost sarcasm here: “He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself.” - J Mac

#1511 Tongue Tied Part 1

6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching? 7 Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if the trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue a word that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of sounds in the world, and none is without meaning. 11 If then I do not know the meaning of the sound, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.

13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may translate. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the uninformed say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking; rather in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law it is written, “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord. 22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign not to unbelievers but to those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and uninformed men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that surely God is among you.

Orderly Worship

26 What is the outcome then, brothers? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has a translation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must translate; 28 but if there is no translator, he must keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted. 32 And the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34 The women are to keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35 But if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church. 36 Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it arrived to you only?

37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone remains ignorant about this, he is ignored by God.

39 Therefore, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. 1 Corinthians 14

1 Corinthians 14 Tongues

Warning - To hopefully avoid some confusion here, let it be understood that these posts are part of an ongoing conversation between me and a friend, who is Pentecostal but who I also believe to be a brother in Christ. There is no disrespect of people intended. This will include posts #1511 to #1515.

V. 1 Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts - So he opens this chapter with where he left off in 13, love, the more excellent way. The apostle Paul uses some hyperbole in the thirteen chapter to illustrate his point, "If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, know all mysteries and all knowledge, I have all faith, give all my possessions, surrender my body to be burned." None of these things can stand alone, and all of these things must be viewed in the light of God's definition of love. Tongues, prophesying, even martyrdom have no meritorious saving power, none can define a Christian outside of love, and God owes no man anything more than the wages of sin. It is what He owes His Son that saves us, that we are called in Him. It is Christ's life, His death, His resurrection that we believe in. Love is on a whole other level, because if you don't have that, then when we judge the tree by it's fruit, we know this to be no planting of the Holy Spirit. You could speak in tongues yet be a noisy gong, you could be a dynamic speaker, a great expositor, but without love it's nothing.

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind, is not jealous, does not brag, is not puffed up; 5 it does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered; 6 it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails, but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now abide faith, hope, love—these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13

…34A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” 36“Lord, where are You going?” Simon Peter asked. Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”… John 13: 34-36

7Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.… 1 John 4: 7-9

Now, for even more context, 13 comes off of a dissertation in 12 about spiritual gifts. Paul is speaking to a group of people that needed a lot of correction. People were thinking the gifts a reason to be puffed up, and this was a rather chaotic, disorderly congregation. I will try to stay away from the modern excesses in this as much as possible, like the prosperity gospel, but Paul is dealing with excesses in these chapters so where it applies generally I will have to show the correlation. In chapter 12 we see that the gifts were given differently, not everyone was a foot, not everyone a hand, a mouth etc., so there is no need to assume that you are less of a believer because you do not have a particular gift, and as the text will clearly indicate, tongues itself was a lesser gift, so there was no reason to be puffed up about it either. When I was in the Pentecostal movement many thought to a very high extreme that everyone who believed manifested the fact of their salvation by speaking in tongues. Others saw it as part of a second baptism, and still others (most) as a prayer language. I was instructed on how to speak in tongues many times before I finally let loose at a meeting where several people had their hands on me and were pushing me backwards and forwards while supposedly speaking in tongues, but sounding more like pagan, ritualistic chanting, similar to what I have heard at Rainbow gatherings, places like Cassadaga, or when watching movies and documentaries about the occult in tribal or island places where they practice voodoo. I definitely felt something when we were doing this, but I feel similar in a mosh pit at a rock concert, that sort of euphoria that comes with certain practices, crowd energy, or even just fasting and doing meditative chanting. It was very experiential but I don't believe I was exercising the Biblical gift of tongues. They were chanting, I was shy, a little nervous, and then just eventually started making sounds following their lead. They all started praising God, so I thought I got it, now I am a super Christian, but later I would leave and want to be an atheist.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 And there are varieties of workings, but the same God who works everything in everyone. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to someone else faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the workings of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to someone else various kinds of tongues, and to another the translation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11

14 For also the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But now God has appointed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now there are many members, but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, how much more is it that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary, 23 and those members of the body which we think as less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, 24 whereas our more presentable members have no such need. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, 25 so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all translate? 31 But you earnestly desire the greater gifts.1 Corinthians 12: 14-31

V. 1C But especially that you may prophesy - Ultimately this is more edifying and obviously more loving, to repeat what God says to people with exposition and application so that they can understand. As Jesus said to Peter, "if you love Me then feed My sheep." When we truly love people we will not try to bypass the mind reaching for their feelings, nor shall we cover truth, or try to point to ourselves. As the time of the apostles was moving toward it's end, as we got closer to the last book being sealed by John, Paul admonishes Timothy about the Word of God and the practices he needed to continue in. Some say they are prophets today, like those who foretell, but I will go deeper into that as work through the chapter. I remember coming to the faith and hearing John Macarthur, a man who has preached the word for over 50 years at a single church (that's a faithful shepherd), answer a question. The question was what will you regret most when you die, and his answer floored me, he said, "that I don't know the Scriptures better." Sadly, I met many charismatics that would tell me the opposite. I would bring up something from Scripture and they would say, "I don't have time for that, I've already read the Bible, I need a fresh word every day." Well I'm sorry my friend, but that fresh word is your own, it's all in your head, what you want to hear.

A T Robertson suggests that "This verse looks back to 1 Cor 12:31, and sums up the two preceding chapters. The Corinthians are to follow with persistence (Rom. 9:30, 31, 14:19; 1 Thess. 5:15, etc.) ‘the more excellent way,’ and to desire with intensity (12:31, 14:39; 2 Cor. 11:2; Gal. 4:17) supernatural gifts; but (more than all the rest) that they may be inspired to preach." - Precept Austin

Bob Utley has a helpful note on prophesy - The term “prophesy” is used in I Corinthians in a specialized sense. It does not refer to the prophetic activity of OT prophets (written Scripture), but to a clear communication of the gospel, whether by public preaching or private witness. Paul desires it for all believers (cf. 14:39), but it is also a spiritual gift (cf. 1 Cor 12:10, 28–29). All believers participate at some level in all of the gifts of the Spirit, but one or another is energized and empowered by the Spirit within individual believers for special effectiveness. This diversity demands a co-operative and loving spirit among believers. We are called to unity, not uniformity, for the gospel. We are only effective corporately! We desperately need other believers. The church is a community of called, gifted, full-time ministers. We are gifted for the spread of the gospel and the health and wholeness of the church. This gift is compared with tongues by the criteria of “does it edify the whole church”? It means in this context “proclaiming the gospel,” which is then a blessing to believers as well as visitors. Speaking in tongues is only a blessing to the individual believer if it is interpreted. This term is not to be understood in its OT sense of inspired revelation. (1 Corinthians 14 Commentary)

Staton - Paul shares several reasons why he prefers proclamation in a person’s language over speaking in a foreign language that is not translated. Proclaiming God’s Word in a native language is simply more profitable, beneficial, and useful than speaking in a foreign language. (1 Corinthians)

As Swindoll says "Before the Scriptures were complete, God’s inspired, authoritative message was communicated to the early church through the lips of recognized prophets. Authentic prophets had to have “a message from God in the form of special revelation, . . . guidance regarding its declaration so that it would be given forth accurately, and the message itself had to have the authority of God.”"The question arises as to whether there are prophets in this sense today? Swindoll responds that "The prophet was much needed in the first century because the New Testament was not yet complete. So the prophets, together with the apostles, formed the foundational ministries of the church of the first generation (Eph. 2:20). Today the authoritative, prophetic teachings of the apostles and prophets are preserved for every believer and every church through their writings contained in the Bible, making the need for living apostles and prophets unnecessary."

Prophesy (4395)(propheteuo from pró = before or forth + phemí = tell) means literally to tell forth and can mean to speak forth God's message, (having been taught of God). The idea is speaking with the help of divine inspiration to proclaim what God wants to make known. In other contexts to prophesy means to speak under inspiration and foretell future events. Its most prominent use is in connection with the oracles at places like Delphi. Typically, a person would ask a question of the gods and receive a cryptic answer from the female mouthpiece of the deities. This answer would then be completed and interpreted by the men who specialized in that task. Prophēteuō in this context meant “explain a message from the gods in response to a client’s question.” Propheteuo - 27v - Matt. 7:22; Matt.

 11:13Matt. 15:7Matt. 26:68; - Precept Austin

…15From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.… 2 Timothy 3: 15-17

14Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin. 15Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth. 16But avoid irreverent, empty chatter, which will only lead to more ungodliness,… 2 Timothy 2: 14-16

#1510 John 14 Part 1 Ripples IN The Soul

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way where I am going.” 5 Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going. How do we know the way?” 6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14: 1-6 LSB

John 14: 1-6 One Way

Do not let your heart be troubled - Well, Jesus has over and over again told them that He is going to die, to leave, and He has just told them that they can't go where He is going yet. They now know that one of their rank is a traitor, and it's is so unobvious to them that they must be judging that it is Matthew because he was a tax collector, or those, who like me, may go a bit too far into the introspective spectrum, are probably wondering, is it me? Does He mean me, am I going to be too afraid to stand up for Him, to go through trauma for Him, to lose my job, my comforts for Him? Their hearts have much to be troubled over, but in essence He is saying and will continue to spell out here, let go of your unbelief, don't trust in you, trust in Me.

This was in some sense a command. “The form of the imperative me tarassestho implies that they should ‘stop being troubled.’ ‘Set your heart at ease’ would be a good translation.” (Tenney)

iii. Jesus didn’t say, “I’m happy you men are troubled and filled with doubts. You’re doubts are wonderful.” “He takes no delight in the doubt and disquietude of his people. When he saw that because of what he had said to them sorrow had filled the hearts of his apostles, he pleaded with them in great love, and besought them to be comforted.” (Spurgeon) - From E Word

…4Is my complaint against a man? Then why should I not be impatient? 5Look at me and be appalled; put your hand over your mouth. 6When I remember, terror takes hold, and my body trembles in horror.… Job 21: 4-6

…15Therefore I am terrified in His presence; when I consider this, I fear Him. 16God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. 17Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.… Job 23: 15-17

…5Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence. 6O my God, my soul despairs within me. Therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan and the peaks of Hermon— even from Mount Mizar. 7Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and waves have rolled over me.…
…8The LORD decrees His loving devotion by day, and at night His song is with me as a prayer to the God of my life. 9I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?” 10Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”… Psalm 42: 5-10

V. 1b Believe in God, believe also in Me - They believe in the invisible God, the God they have not seen, and they believe by their own admission that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah, but they need to believe in Him even away from them in the flesh. We know of nothing without a cause, and they believe that God is the cause, the Creator, yet they have not physically seen Him. Jesus tells them that if you have seen Me then you have seen the Father, after all He is Immanuel, God with Us, God become man and dwelling among us, to tabernacle with us. If you have come to believe there is a God, have come to recognize the Bible as His word because of the fulfillment of it's prophecies and honest portrayal of the human condition, well Jesus is the Word become flesh to dwell among you. Here is the tension though, the rub, our falleness tends towards unbelief and fear, and what Jesus is saying, what He has continued to put out there, that the Son of Man must suffer just like the prophet Isaiah foretold, that is not the way they are writing the script in their own minds. They are wanting to walk into the kingdom right now, and the King is telling them that He is going away from them presently, and they can't go where He is going yet. Let's face it, if I were to write the story it would be much different as well, I wouldn't deny the Christ 3 times so that every time a rooster crowed thereafter it would throw me into PTSD. I would be rich, healthy and never get skunked when I go fishing, but it's not my story to write, in fact, it has already been written, decreed even.

…12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, would be for the praise of His glory. 13And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth— the gospel of your salvation— you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.…
15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him.… Ephesians 1: 12-17

…20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake. 21Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God. 22Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.… 1 Peter 1: 20-22

14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.… Colossians 1: 14-16

V.2 In My Father's house are many dwelling places - He offers a truth that should shift their minds to another place, from the temporary to the eternal. I find no fountain so cool and refreshing as this, to extinguish my rage, my disappointment and anxiety in this present life. To know that I am but a sojourner here is a great relief, a calming antidote to the stress and depression of materialism. Yes there is pain here, but it is not forever, yes there is injustice, but my own sin is enough to be troubled over, and if justice does not come now then it will come when Christ returns. He has received that justice which was owed to me, so I should be quick to forgive, happy to help another make right, and if they don't then I shall write it off, for the time here is short.

1Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.… 2 Corinthians 5: 1-3

…14Now those who say such things show that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.… Hebrews 11: 14-16

V.3 I will come again and receive you unto Myself - Does God make promises He does not keep? If it is believed that He is coming and we don't know when, how is it that this does not move you? Why do we remain so caught up in the trivial and looking down instead of up?

…16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.… 1 Thessalonians 4: 16-18

The Holy Spirit desires believers to be heavenly minded, not earthly minded, which is one reason that inspired approximately one of every 20-25 verses to speak directly or indirectly about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. It is axiomatic that what you are looking for will affect what you are living for. Or stated another way, Who you are looking for (Jesus), will (should) radically impact what you are living for. In short, a heavenly uplook is one of the best antidotes for an earthly outlook. Stated another way vertical vision will motivate horizontal living and godliness. If you are looking for Jesus, the chances are very much increased that you will be living for Jesus. The choices you make each day can and will be radically impacted by such vertical vision.

Vertical Vision is a simple, but powerful Biblical principle to motivate daily growth in Christlikeness! In Titus 2:13 Paul says we are to be "looking for the Blessed Hope (Phillips = "the glorious dénouement") and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Christ Jesus." In the preceding passage Paul calls for us (enabled by the Spirit) to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in this present (passing, temporal) age! If you are looking for Jesus to return in Titus 2:13 (Vertical Vision), you are far more likely to be living for Him, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, and instead living sensibly, righteously and godly in this present evil age (Horizontal Living)! If we are continually looking for Him, His Spirit will give us the desire and the power (Php 2:13NLT+) to be continually living for Him. This future hope (absolute assurance God will do good to us in the future) empowers present behavior. Have you allowed the world to weigh you down and cause you to take your eyes off of His return? Are you living more for your passing pleasure than for His glorious appearing? Don't be downcast. Confess it. Repent. And begin to live as if His return could be today (because it COULD BE TODAY!). - Precept Austin

Vs. 4-6 I am the way, and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me - Jesus' answer to Thomas was Himself. If you know Me you know the Father. He is "the" way seems to anticipate, and certainly His omniscience does, all the other ways, the thieves, the robbers and the posers that will claim to be messiahs and or "ways". The "truth" we so often forget is an eternally existing being. There is nothing in Him that need change or comply to truth, it originates in Him and the fullness of human perception of right can only be known through Him. There is no your truth, my truth, her truth, it is what God says it is, and Jesus is the perfect embodiment of all truth, the eternal Word. The life means there is nothing that has come into being without Him, He is eternal life, and we live and breathe by His good pleasure. Everything that was made was made by Him and for Him, which also speaks to His eternal nature. He has to be the way because it is an infinite Being that man has sinned against, One eternally opposed to our sin.

Note that Jesus differentiates Himself clearly from false "ways" by not saying He is "A way" which would leave open the door for the interpretation that He was one of many ways to God. He did not leave the door open for that damning teaching. Further, Jesus differentiated Himself from other false ways that are a dead end street (pun intended!) Buddha said, “I am a guide to way.” Mohammed said, “I am a teacher of the truth.” Jesus said, “I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life.” The clear implication of Jesus' words is that Jesus is the only way and the only truth and the only life.

I am the way, without me there is no Going
I am the Truth, without me there is no Knowing
I am the Life, without me there is no Growing.

No one (oudeis) comes to the Father (pater) but through Me - No one (oudeis) in simple terms means "ABSOLUTELY no one!" Jesus is clearly and plainly making the point that He and He Alone is the only way to come to the Father. There is absolutely no other way! Jesus is "narrow minded" because He wants everyone to fully understand that the way is narrow! In His Sermon on the Mount He warned "Enter (aorist imperative see the need of the Holy Spirit to obey Jesus' command, cf Jn 3:5-8+) through the narrow gate; FOR (CRUCIAL term of explanation) the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. FOR (ANOTHER CRUCIAL term of explanation - Jesus explains why one must obey His command) the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it." (Mt 7:13-14+) Notice Jesus use of the two adjectives "many" and "few" which sound a clear warning that one must enter through Him or they will forever suffer loss and destruction (eternal punishment)! - Precept Austin

…8All who came before Me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.… John 10: 8-10

…8And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not travel it—only those who walk in the Way—and fools will not stray onto it. 9No lion will be there, and no vicious beast will go up on it. Such will not be found there, but the redeemed will walk upon it. 10So the redeemed of the LORD will return and enter Zion with singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee.… Isaiah 35: 8-10

…24But because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. 25Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them. 26Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.… Hebrews 7: 24-26

8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs, 9so that the Gentiles may glorify God for His mercy. As it is written: “Therefore I will praise You among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to Your name.” 10Again, it says: “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.”… Romans 15: 8-10

…10Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son. 11And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.… 1 John 5: 10-12
