#1457 John 1 Part 3 Immanuel

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. John 1: 1-5 LSB

John 1: 1c God With Us

The Word was God - “And the Word was [being] God.” He always was God! This statement could not be much clearer! In fact these four Greek words (theos en ho logos) may be the clearest declaration of the Godhood of Jesus Christ in all of holy writ! (As an a aside, given the profundity of this simple verse in English, surely it would be a passage every saint would want to treasure as precious gold in their heart!)

John Phillips - That is, in His essence, in what He actually is, in His nature, person, and personality, in His attributes and character, Jesus is all that God is. All the essential characteristics of deity are His. He exists in His own right, independent of all creation. Does God have the wisdom and power to create a hundred million galaxies and hold them whirling through space at enormous velocities on inconceivable paths, according to fixed laws, expending prodigious amounts of energy? So does Jesus. Such is the Lord's ineffable person. (Exploring the Gospel of John)

The Jehovah's Witnesses mistranslate this verse in their 2013 revised "New World Translation" - "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was a god." (Online perversion) This cult brazenly and falsely calls the Word or Jesus a god with a little "g." If Jesus was not God with a capital "G" then all of mankind is still dead in its trespasses and sins, for a little "g" god cannot effect redemption. Only the God-Man can fulfill the requirements of a Kinsman-Redeemer! (See refutation of the Jehovah Witnesses' blatant mistranslation on John 1:1) - Precept Austin

And the Word was God - Even more clarification, if taken at it's words then the first verse says volumes about Who God is and Who Jesus, the Word, is in God. As we see in the paragraph above, there are cult groups and this being a very good sign that someone or a collective is a cult, is who do they say Christ is? This is the question that I stop them with at my door, they always come with a Bible, say they are followers of Christ, so I stop them there and we cut to the chase, "Who is Jesus Christ?" If they say he came not in the flesh, but as a symbolic apparition, or that he came in someone else's flesh, an Avatar, in a long procession of appearances throughout history, including Buddha, Mohammed, and many other false prophets, self professed enlightened ones, then they are of a gnostic cult, the mystery religions, they like a hippie sort of Jesus. If they say they believe in Jesus, but Jesus is not God, that he is the brother of Lucifer, a created being then they teach a Jesus not found in Holy Scripture, and they preach a false gospel. So why is that? Why do they make up their own Jesus, twist Scripture, yet try to sell themselves often as being Christian? As I engage them it becomes more and more clear that we are using a lot of the same terms, the name Jesus, but our definitions points to two very different people. With the Mormons it becomes crystal clear that we don't share the same God at all, they believe that the Creator of this world was created by another god. So it is really quite simple to follow their logic. Look at the practices of their founders, Joseph Smith and many others were polygamist. The God of the Bible create them male and female in the beginning, and the two became one flesh, from this union comes all of mankind. In it's original state there was fidelity, but this was not the practice of Joseph Smith and many others, they believed, much like those in Islam, that more is better. If a Muslim dies in a holy war, doing some act of bravery, he gets 100 virgins in the after life. Mormons believe that they will become gods, each getting their own little planet to populate with many wives. They share the same problem as all fallen human beings, they want things that God says are vain, they don't want what God says, so they make up their own god. The Mormons would be moralist like the Pharisees, who also had issues with the after life. It comes down to motive, and more importantly whether someone has been born again.

23 On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and asked Him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife and raise up a seed for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first married and died, and having no seed, he left his wife to his brother; 26 so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh. 27 And last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her.”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” 33 And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. Matthew 22: 23-33

Another issue with all these groups is that they receive extrabiblical revelation, much like the modern Pentecostal movement where many have gone to modalism, and or down play the significance of who Christ is in favor of a prosperity gospel. All of these are seeking a reward here, even that which God speaks so firmly against. None of them like the gospel that Jesus preached, the call of self denial.

3If anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching, 4he is conceited and understands nothing. Instead, he has an unhealthy interest in controversies and semantics, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction between men of depraved mind who are devoid of the truth. These men regard godliness as a means of gain.…
6Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.… 1 Timothy 6: 3-7

1Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them the way of truth will be defamed. 3In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with deceptive words. The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep.…
…4For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment; 5if He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, among the eight; 6if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly;…
7and if He rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.… 2 Peter 2: 1-9

So when it says the Word was God, how did Jesus, the Son of God, describe Himself?

…29My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are one.” 31At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.…
…32But Jesus responded, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me?” 33“ We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, declare Yourself to be God.” 34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’?… John 10: 29-34

…8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.… John 14: 8-10

…57Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.… John 8: 57-59

In John 8:58  He uses the description that Jehovah uses in referring to Himself, and they clearly understand what He is saying, so they try to stone Him.

…13Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?” 14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.… Exodus 3: 13-15

The Jehovah's Witnesses also come over with a King James Bible to try to show that they regard God's word and they use the name Jesus and Jehovah as well, but who is their Jesus? He, according to their literature, passed down by people who received extrabiblical revelation directly "from God", is Michael the archangel. Hmmm, that's interesting, because the Bible tells us not to worship angels, yet we are to worship the Son, and Jesus received worship and being referred to as God without correcting His followers. Jehovah's Witnesses have also received extra revelation through their pseudo prophets that predicted Christ's return several times on several dates and none have come true.

…21You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?” 22When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18: 21-22

1If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you, 2and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,” 3you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul.… Deuteronomy 13: 1-3

…7which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse! 9As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse!… Galatians 1: 7-9

John's own interaction with an angel:

…8And I am John, who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. 9But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” 10Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of prophecy in this book, because the time is near.… Revelation 22: 8-10

…17These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body that casts it belongs to Christ. 18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. Such a person is puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind. 19He has lost connection to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and knit together by its joints and ligaments, grows as God causes it to grow.… Colossians 2: 17-19

…9“All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.” 10“Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus declared. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” 11Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.… Matthew 4: 9-11

…24Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen. 26For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.… Romans 1: 24-26

If Jesus is not God then there is something wrong here:

…27Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”… John 20: 27-29

…5For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be His Father, and He will be My Son”? 6And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.” 7Now about the angels He says: “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.”… Hebrews 1: 5-7

…9Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.… Philippians 2: 9-11

…32And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!” 34When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.… Matthew 14: 32-34

Herbert Lockyer says "What a tremendous phrase this is—The Word was God! Language has no meaning if these four words do not clearly teach that Christ is "Very God of Very God."… He was not only a divine person, but the Source and Spring of all that is divine. He is not merely of God, and with God, He is God, and His Deity is one of the great themes of John's gospel. "My Father and I are one" (John 10:30)—they were one in substance and essence, and therefore the Son is to be worshipped with the same worship as is due the Father."… It is not said that He is the God, for such an assertion would ascribe to a Son "the totality of the Divine Being, and contradict the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. And He is not said to be Divine, which would lessen the emphasis. But He is said, distinctly and emphatically, to be God—'God manifest in flesh.'"… Christ, then, came not as a Word of God, but the Word—the only revelation of God to man, and He declared all God had to say to men. In Creation, He was the expression of divine power, but in His Incarnation He became the revelation of the divine character (Matthew 11:27; John 17:26)… May He, as the Word, dwell in us richly in all wisdom (Colossians 3:16)! He is the Word, cleansing from sin, and if hid in our heart, will keep us clean (Psalm 119:9-11).

'Tis the Father's pleasure
We should call Him Lord,
Who from the beginning
Was the Mighty Word.

Spurgeon - I know not how the Deity of Christ can be more plainly declared than in his eternal duration. He is from the beginning. In his glory he was “with God.” In his nature he “was God.”

Come, Thou Incarnate Word,
Gird on Thy mighty sword;
Our prayer attend:
Come, and Thy people bless,
And give Thy Word success,
Spirit of Holiness,
On us descend! - Precept Austin

#1456 John 1 Part 2 Elohim

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. John 1: 1-5 LSB

John 1: 1b Word was with God

John MacArthur on Logos - John borrowed the use of the term “Word” not only from the vocabulary of the OT but also from Gr. philosophy, in which the term was essentially impersonal, signifying the rational principle of “divine reason,” “mind,” or even “wisdom.” John, however, imbued the term entirely with OT and Christian meaning (e.g., Ge 1:3 where God’s Word brought the world into being; Pss 33:6; 107:20; Pr 8:27 where God’s Word is His powerful self-expression in creation, wisdom, revelation, and salvation) and made it refer to a person, i.e., Jesus Christ. Greek philosophical usage, therefore, is not the exclusive background of John’s thought. Strategically, the term “Word” serves as a bridge-word to reach not only Jews but also the unsaved Greeks. John chose this concept because both Jews and Greeks were familiar with it. - Precept Austin

1b - And the Word was with God - The first 3 verses here could stand alone as both the doctrinal statement of a Trinitarian view and the clarifying statements. Nevertheless, we are given even more to support this, from Old Testament to New, so let's start within this close context and then take a trip backwards in time to acknowledge someone who existed outside of time. Even when referring to time, we often say before time, but that is the language of time and space, even when we say preexisting, so who can exhaustively describe God? We know from verse 1 that He, the Word, was there at the beginning, and in 1b. that He was with God, v. 2 reemphasizes both statements, and verse 3 removes the rabbit trails. This is a very specific, logical, almost mathematical clarifier. "All things came into being through Him", so everything that was brought into existence was through Him, meaning He would have to preexist all created things, be uncreated. "And apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being", even further clarification of this great truth, everything that was made was through Him, so 1, He couldn't have made Himself because that would put Him into the everything, negating the statement. And 2, who is the Creator? That would be God, so this is the way He was with God in the beginning, as the Word, as God the Son.

The Word was with God (logos he pros ton theon) - One could accurately paraphrase this as "the Word was [being] intimately before God." In other words John is saying there is more than one person in the Godhead! And picture is of the Word facing God. The Son was continually "inclined toward" the Father. The Son was forever face to face with the Father. The picture simply, but profoundly paints the picture that the Father and the Son enjoyed intimate fellowship with each other throughout eternity, being continually "face-to-face" as it were! The implication is clear that the Father had fellowship with a Person, not a philosophical principle (given that Logos could have a very abstract sense in Greek). This pre-existent Word was distinct from the Father, not in essence, but in Person. - Precept Austin

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.… Genesis 1: 1-3

John Phillips comments on the plurality of God that John introduces - The Old Testament writers caught glimpses of this. In the great Jewish credal statement found in Deuteronomy 6:4, the Hebrews expressed the unity of God: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." But the very first sentence in the Bible expressed the idea of plurality in the godhead: "In the beginning God [Elohim, a plural noun] created [a singular verb] the heaven and the earth." This usage is consistent throughout the Old Testament; God is referred to in a plural form accompanied by a singular verb. Thus, embedded in the Old Testament is the idea of the trinity: one God, three persons. Expressed mathematically this would not be 1 + 1 + 1 (which equals three), but 1 x 1 x 1 (which equals one). From both Old and New Testaments we arrive at the concept of God existing as three persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Three persons, one God." (Exploring the Gospel of John) - Precept Austin

I have had Jehovah's witnesses and Mormons get upset with me for saying that the word Elohim, the word used for God in the very first verse of the Bible, is a singular plural, but I can easily demonstrate the plurality of the Godhead as we move through the Creation story. The Bible gives us words but also word pictures.

…25God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.… Genesis 1: 25-27

So, very simple sentence structures here, almost as though God somehow anticipated the debate. Gen 1:26, "let Us make man in Our image", plural, but is He talking to angels, who is He, God, talking to? V. 27 clarifies it and other things that have become an issue in our day, "God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." The Us and Our of v. 26 is defined by the His own image and image of God in v. 27. An angel is a created being, and so not God, and so one can't add anything to the "image of God", very simply clarified, but lets look at another instance.

Yahweh says to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
Until I put Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
2 Yahweh will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
“Have dominion in the midst of Your enemies.”
3 Your people will offer themselves freely in the day of Your power;
In the splendor of holiness, from the womb of the dawn,
The dew of Your youthfulness will be Yours.

4 Yahweh has sworn and will not change His mind,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at Your right hand;
He will crush kings in the day of His anger.
6 He will render justice among the nations,
He will fill them with corpses,
He will crush the head that is over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will lift up His head. Psalm 110: 1-7

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “The son of David.” 43 He *said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’?

45 Therefore, if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question. Matthew 22: 41-46

There is a great sense of community in the Persons of the Godhead, different Persons but the same in substance. I have had those of cult background insist that God made Jesus, and then made Jesus into a god. That is really no God at all that has to be made, the God of scripture is not called into being. It is a beyond difficult concept, you can just as easily measure eternity as you can draw a picture of the Triune God. Listen to the way God (Elohim) describes Himself.

…9All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this, and proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses to vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.” 10“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come. 11I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no Savior but Me.… Isaiah 43: 9-11

…17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known. 19And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”… John 1: 17-19

…5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many so-called gods and lords), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist. 7But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.… 1 Corinthians 8: 5-7

…6“I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, 7to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house. 8I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols.… Isaiah 42: 6-8

It is interesting that we are made in God's image, to reflect the character and glory of the One Who made us, and God has all along been, eternally, in community. My understanding of this is sophomoric at best, and I dare not stray or dream too far from what God has said plainly in Scripture, acknowledging also that while I am made in His image, it is marred and stained by our fall into sin. Even my understanding is corrupted so I must proceed with great care and trepidation so as not to confuse myself or any reader. Think about that though in your fellow human being, even the worst you know is still made in God's image, so there is no room for hatred, no room for the silliness of racism, and our desire in each person that we meet should be to see the image of God restored.

Fortner - John is declaring the eternal existence of the Word with the Father, his relation and nearness to him, his equality with him, and particularly the distinction of the Word from the Father. He was always with him, and is with him, and ever will be with him. From all eternity there was an intimate and ineffable union between the first and second Persons in the blessed Trinity, — between Christ the Word, and God the Father. John seems to be emphasizing, not just the eternality of the Word and the eternal union of the Father and the Son, but the eternal communion of the Divine Persons. The preposition “with,” is a preposition of direction and means “toward,” or “face to face with,” suggesting both equality and agreement. The phrase might be translated, “and the Word was toward God.” It expresses the idea of motion. (Sermon on Jn 1:1)

John Bunyan penned the following rapturous words "O Thou Son of the Blessed! Grace stripped Thee of thy glory. Grace brought Thee down from heaven. Grace made Thee bear such burdens of sin, such burdens of curse as are unspeakable. Grace was in Thy heart. Grace came bubbling up from Thy bleeding side. Grace was in Thy tears. Grace was in Thy prayers. Grace streamed from Thy thorn-crowned brow! Grace came forth with the nails that pierced Thee, with the thorns that pricked Thee! Oh, here are unsearchable riches of grace! Grace to make sinners happy! Grace to make angels wonder! Grace to make devils astonished!” - Precept Austin

#1455 John 1 Part 1 Logos

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. John 1: 1-5 LSB

John 1:1

In the beginning - This is Creation, not only of matter, but also markedly of time and space. This is the point where the infinite introduces the finite, the edge of our meaning and detection. Something from outside of time and space is calling into being things that are not of themselves. The self existing is bringing about that which is dependent. In Matthew and Luke we saw them start with genealogies that revealed Jesus' claim to the throne of a human dynasty, the throne of David, one tracing His parentage through Joseph, Jesus' adopted father, and the other through Mary, His mother as unto the flesh. He was called the Seed of the woman as far back as the promise made in the garden to Adam and Eve, our parents regarding the flesh and our fallen natures, our parents unto entropy as all that is Created is not self existing, not eternal being. John's gospel is giving a different sort of genealogy that is complicated for finite minds, that of the eternal, the heavenly heritage, that of One Who was not called into being, but Is. This is the calling forth of One Who preexists time, the eternally begotten Son, the Word, to enter into time and space, be born of a woman, perfectly interweaving His deity with humanity. He is wholly God and wholly man, the perfect mediator.

…16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence.… Colossians 1: 16-18

…9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You above Your companions with the oil of joy.” 10And: “In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment.… Hebrews 1: 9-11

…2and Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother or genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time. 4Consider how great Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder.… Hebrews 7: 2-4

Another verse in Scripture starts out this way, let's go back to Genesis.

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.… Genesis 1: 1-3

The very first words in your Bible are a clear, and upon scrutiny, perfect scientific statement.

When Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” no one was confused by that. No one can possibly misunderstand what that means. It is so simple; except one of my grandchildren once, because she came home from class and said that her Sunday School teacher said, “God created everything. God created everything.” And she raised her little hand and said, “Oh, no He didn’t. A whole bunch of stuff is made in China.” So apart from her, no one is mystified by Genesis 1:1; and I had to try to recover the damage it did to my career as a pastor.

But as simple as that statement is, it is the first illustration in the Bible. Genesis 1:1 is the first illustration in the Bible of God’s immense ability to cover profound reality in a simplicity of words, the meaning of which is utterly unmistakable.

Scientist Herbert Spencer who died in 1903 did not believe the Bible, but he was one of the early architects of categories, scientific categories. He said, “Everything in the world can fit into five categories: time, force, action, space, and matter.” And he was hailed and given awards for those catalogs: time, force, action, space, and matter. That’s all in Genesis 1:1. In the beginning is time, God is force, created is action, the heavens is space, and the earth is matter. Sorry, Herbert, we were there before you. - J Mac

Was the Word - The Word, Logos, was there at Creation, and we also see in Gen. 1:2 the Spirit of God hovering. There is so much stuff here, but let's start with the Word, the Logos, John has chosen to use this word rather than the name Jesus or Messiah, this is Who Christ was before we knew Him as Jesus, before His incarnation into this world. This is reference to His eternal nature, the Son of God, existing with the Father and the Holy Spirit. There are aberrant "Christian" groups in the Pentecostal movement today that hold to a belief, a doctrine called modalism, where God is not 3 distinct persons, but rather 1 God with 3 modes, sometimes He is the Father, sometimes the Son and sometimes the Spirit, switching back and forth, but at Jesus' baptism we find the presence of all 3. I have talked to people who believe this way and they say it's because the Bible never uses the word "Trinity", but it also never uses the word modalism, but that it is just a word we use to describe the doctrine. The important thing is which does the Bible teach? Pentecostals receive, they believe they do but I don't, extrabiblical revelation, some of which contradicts God's proven revelation, His Word. All good doctrine should be derived Sola Scriptura, from the simple and clear teaching of Scripture, taking the whole counsel of God on any matter. Look here at both His entry (conception) into this world and His baptism:

18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23 “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus. Matthew 1: 18-25

…34“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.… Luke 1: 34-36

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”… Mark 1: 9-11

Back to the Logos. This is a Greek word which conveys expression, that of logic and reason, but in the tradition of some of the philosophers it would be impersonal, but here the Logos is being revealed as a person, the person and work of Jesus Christ, in Whom all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. The Greeks understood that there was a god or a force, but here the true God is made known, the Creator announces Himself in addition to the need of causation, in addition to what can be known by nature, here is His word of revelation.

Calvin - “The Evangelist sends us to the eternal sanctuary of God and teaches us that the Word was, as it were, hidden there before He revealed Himself in the outward workmanship of the world.”

John's introductory words "in the beginning" would have expected to be followed by the word "God" as in Genesis 1:1, but instead introduce the Word. And so even with this first phrase, John causes us to begin thinking that this "Word" is more that an abstract philosophical concept as seen in the Greek culture, but that the Word was divine, which he subsequently proves.

In the 2nd century, Clement of Alexandria wrote that one of the atheistic Platonic philosophers, said of John 1:1-3, “This barbarian hath comprised more stupendous stuff in three lines, than we have done in all our voluminous discourses.”

Milne - John’s contention is that at the point where we reach the boundary of all human conceptualizing we have to begin our speaking about Jesus Christ; he shares God’s eternity; he was with God in the beginning (2). ‘If we ask the fundamental question of the philosopher, “Why is there not nothing?” the answer is that in the “beginning was the Word” ’. Although he lived within time as a human being he is not bound by time. He predates all existence; ‘there never was when he was not’ (Athanasius). However far back we set the beginning of things, and whatever model we employ to describe that origin, according to John, Jesus was present as the presiding Lord of that moment and event (cf. Ge 1:3). This truth has major implications for the way we conceive God. Since Jesus is the eternal Word of God (14), and since ‘I [Jesus] and the Father are one’ (Jn 10:30) and ‘Anyone who has seen me [Jesus] has seen the Father’ (Jn 14:9), God is always Jesus-like! ‘God is Christlike and in Him is no unChristlikeness at all’ (A. M. Ramsey). This is important for the way we read the Old Testament. The significance of this opening phrase of John is that the God who speaks in the Old Testament, who entered into covenant with his people Israel, and inspired and moved the prophets, was none other than the God known in Jesus Christ. God has not changed or evolved. Jesus Christ was always at the heart of God. (The Message of John Bible Speaks Today) (Bolding added)

A W Pink - “In the beginning” is something we are unable to comprehend: it is one of those matchless sweeps of inspiration which rises above the level of human thought. “In the beginning was the word,” and we are equally unable to grasp the final meaning of this. A “word” is an expression: by words we articulate our speech. The Word of God, then, is Deity expressing itself in audible terms. And yet, when we have said this, how much there is that we leave unsaid! (John 1:1-13 Christ the Eternal Word) - Precept Austin

The Word (3055)(lógos/logos from légō = to speak with words; English = logic, logical) means something said and describes a communication whereby the mind finds expression in words. To the Greek philosophers Logos was the impersonal, abstract principle of reason and order in the universe. Logos referred "to the abstract conception that lies behind everything concrete-to the ideal." (Phillips) However, Jesus was not an impersonal source, force, principle, or emanation, but was a Person who because a Man (Jn 1:14). - Precept Austin

22Then Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I walked around and examined your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore what you worship as something unknown, I now proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands.… Acts 17: 22-24
