14 Now when Jesus had come into Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever. 15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them.
Many Healed in the Evening
16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
“He Himself took our infirmities
And bore our sicknesses.” Matthew 8: 14-17 NKJV

Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. 4Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted. 5But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.… Isaiah 53: 3-5
Jesus had come into Peter's house - This is the Apostle Peter, one of Jesus's original twelve disciples. He is also called Simon (one who hears), Cephas (Rock or stone) in Aramaic, Peter (Rock or stone) in Greek.
While Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, many people pushed to get near Him. They wanted to hear the Word of God. 2 Jesus saw two boats on the shore. The fishermen were not there because they were washing their nets. 3 Jesus got into a boat which belonged to Simon. Jesus asked him to push it out a little way from land. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Push out into the deep water. Let down your nets for some fish.” 5 Simon said to Him, “Teacher, we have worked all night and we have caught nothing. But because You told me to, I will let the net down.” 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish, their net started to break. 7 They called to their friends working in the other boat to come and help them. They came and both boats were so full of fish they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he got down at the feet of Jesus. He said, “Go away from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man.” 9 He and all those with him were surprised and wondered about the many fish. 10 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were surprised also. They were working together with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will fish for men.” 11 When they came to land with their boats, they left everything and followed Jesus. Luke 5: 1-11
Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers. They were Simon (his other name was Peter) and Andrew, his brother. They were putting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. 19 Jesus said to them, “Follow Me. I will make you fish for men!” 20 At once they left their nets and followed Him.
21 Going from there, Jesus saw two other brothers. They were James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were sitting in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them. 22 At once they left the boat and their father and followed Jesus. Matthew 4: 18-22
He saw his wife's mother lying sick with a fever - Peter has a wife and hence a mother in law. The Roman Catholic church teaches contrary to God's word on this, claiming that the Apostles had no wives, when really it would seem that this is only true of Paul and John. They also claim that the Popes are all in an Apostolic line from Peter, which is a silliness that has found it's way into the charismatic church as well, where men claim to be Apostles, yet these men (Jesus's disciples) were pillars of the Church, the foundation, it's beginning, directly taught by Christ, and also inspired by the Holy Ghost in the writing of the NT and establishing it's doctrines. Others during that Apostolic age, the beginning, went about preaching the gospel from town to town. Those who claim new revelation today, apostleship and or forbiddance of marriage are not from God.
i. “St. Ambrose saith that all the apostles were married men, save John and Paul. And those pope-holy hypocrites that will not hear of priests’ marriage, but hold it far better for them to have and keep at home many harlots than one wife.” (Trapp)
ii. “Learn hence, says Theophylact, that marriage is no hinderance to virtue, since the chief of the apostles had his wife. Marriage is one of the first of Divine institutions, and is a positive command of God.” (Clarke)
…4Have we no right to food and to drink? 5Have we no right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas? 6Or are Barnabas and I the only apostles who must work for a living?… 1 Corinthians 9: 4-6
And she arose and served them - A beautiful response, so hath Christ touched us, born our griefs and carried our sorrows. We should do our work with joy, knowing that serving others is serving Him.
Many who were demon possessed - Jesus has shown His authority as the Creator over the physical world, so when He talks about such things, many acknowledge His superiority to other speakers, yet the Pharisees still don't like what He has to say. Now He will show His authority over the spiritual realm.
i. Many who were demon possessed: “Dr. Lightfoot gives two sound reasons why Judea, in our Lord’s time, abounded with demoniacs. First, because they were then advanced to the very height of impiety. See what Josephus, their own historian, says of them: There was not (said he) a nation under heaven more wicked than they were. Secondly, because they were then strongly addicted to magic, and so, as it were, invited evil spirits to be familiar with them.” (Clarke)
With a word - Jesus is God the Son, and God spoke and things came into being. The scriptures make that clear, and science has slowly come to discover language, like programming, at the base of all things, design. DNA "code", long strands of information that physically define who and what we are. To say you are other than what God made you is to speak out against God, against science and reason, delusional. Wanting something to be true does not make it so. Jesus has spoken and commanded both sickness and demons to go away.
That it might be fulfilled - This looks back to Isaiah 53, verses 3-5 are written above. The One Who comes to take on sin and death legitimizes His claim to Messiah by performing miracles that show His power over this. He must also suffer and die to pay the price of sin, for we all are born into this system of slaver, and it is Christ's atonement that sets His sheep free.
…17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”… Luke 4: 17-19
25Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, how slow are your hearts to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?” 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.… Luke 24: 25-27
