#807 Know Of Or Known

In Judah God is known;
his name is great in Israel.
2 His abode has been established in Salem,
his dwelling place in Zion.
3 There he broke the flashing arrows,
the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah

4 Glorious are you, more majestic
than the mountains full of prey.
5 The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil;
they sank into sleep;
all the men of war
were unable to use their hands.
6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
both rider and horse lay stunned.

7 But you, you are to be feared!
Who can stand before you
when once your anger is roused?
8 From the heavens you uttered judgment;
the earth feared and was still,
9 when God arose to establish judgment,
to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise you;
the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.
11 Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them;
let all around him bring gifts
to him who is to be feared,
12 who cuts off the spirit of princes,
who is to be feared by the kings of the earth. Psalm 76 ESV

A Psalm or song of Asaph on Neginoth (stringed instruments).

In Judah God is known - As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. Those who believe in the true God, in both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah, know Him intimately. They bear witness to His words and His deeds, the law and the prophets.

- Although Judah and Israel were unhappily divided politically, yet the godly of both nations were agreed concerning Jehovah their God; and truly whatever schisms may mar the visible church, the saints always "appear as one" in magnifying the Lord their God. - C. H. Spurgeon

Established in Salem - Salem means peace. Abraham gave a tenth of all he had to Melchizedek, who was king of Salem or therefore, king of peace. The greater blessed Abraham.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine— since he was priest of God Most High— 19 and he blessed Abram and said: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,… Genesis 14: 17-19

There He broke - The battle belongs to the Lord, as does the battle that men enter against sin and self. This is an interesting place for this Psalm considering the preceding Psalm 75. This appears to be after a battle where the horn that was lifted up is brought down.

At Your rebuke -

- Thus can the Lord send a judicial sleep over the enemies of the church, a premonition of the second death, and this he can do when they are in the zenith of power; and, as they imagine, in the very act of blotting out the remembrance of his people. The world's Rabshakahs can write terrible letters, but the Lord answers not with pen and ink, but with rebukes, which bear death in every syllable. - C. H. Spurgeon

But You, You are to be feared -

26 “Do not be afraid of them, for nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is secret that will not be made known. 27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10: 26-28

To save all the humble of the earth - "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." He takes away the race from the fast, does not respect the strong, so humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up in good time.

Surely the wrath of man will praise You - There is no weapon fashioned against us that shall prosper but to God's sovereign will and purpose. The Scriptures tell that there will be wars and rumors of wars till the end. This should not shake the foundation of your house, rather stand firm upon the word of God and have faith that He will see you through. Let hope not rest on this life, nor in the goodness of men, for they are full of violence and wrath, but may do nothing that God does not allow. He will be proven just.
