#1142 Ezekiel 12 A Sign For You

The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house. 3 As for you, son of man, prepare for yourself an exile's baggage, and go into exile by day in their sight. You shall go like an exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house. 4 You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, as baggage for exile, and you shall go out yourself at evening in their sight, as those do who must go into exile. 5 In their sight dig through the wall, and bring your baggage out through it. 6 In their sight you shall lift the baggage upon your shoulder and carry it out at dusk. You shall cover your face that you may not see the land, for I have made you a sign for the house of Israel.”

7 And I did as I was commanded. I brought out my baggage by day, as baggage for exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands. I brought out my baggage at dusk, carrying it on my shoulder in their sight.

8 In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’ 10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: This oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are in it.’ 11 Say, ‘I am a sign for you: as I have done, so shall it be done to them. They shall go into exile, into captivity.’ 12 And the prince who is among them shall lift his baggage upon his shoulder at dusk, and shall go out. They shall dig through the wall to bring him out through it. He shall cover his face, that he may not see the land with his eyes. 13 And I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare. And I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it, and he shall die there. 14 And I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops, and I will unsheathe the sword after them. 15 And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries. 16 But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they go, and may know that I am the Lord.”

17 And the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink water with trembling and with anxiety. 19 And say to the people of the land, Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with anxiety, and drink water in dismay. In this way her land will be stripped of all it contains, on account of the violence of all those who dwell in it. 20 And the inhabited cities shall be laid waste, and the land shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

21 And the word of the Lord came to me: 22 “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, The days are near, and the fulfillment of every vision. 24 For there shall be no more any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 For I am the Lord; I will speak the word that I will speak, and it will be performed. It will no longer be delayed, but in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it, declares the Lord God.”

26 And the word of the Lord came to me: 27 “Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, ‘The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’ 28 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: None of my words will be delayed any longer, but the word that I speak will be performed, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 12 ESV

Ezekiel 12

The reason why he must take this method (v. 2): It is because they are a stupid, dull, unthinking people, that will not heed or will soon forget what they only hear of, or at least will not be at all affected with it; it will make no impression at all upon them: Thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, whom it is next to impossible to work any good upon. They have eyes and ears, they have intellectual powers and faculties, but they see not, they hear not. They were idolaters, whose character it was that they were like the idols they worshipped, which have eyes and see not, ears and hear not, Ps. 115:5, 6, 8. Note, Those are to be reckoned rebellious that shut their eyes against the divine light and stop their ears to the divine law. The ignorance of those that are wilfully ignorant, that have faculties and means and will not use them, is so far from being their excuse that it adds rebellion to their sin. None so blind, so deaf, as those that will not see, that will not hear. They see not, they hear not; for they are a rebellious house. The cause is all from themselves: the darkness of the understanding is owing to the stubbornness of the will. Now this is the reason why he must speak to them by signs, as deaf people are taught, that they might be either instructed or ashamed. Note, Ministers must accommodate themselves not only to the weakness, but to the wilfulness of those they deal with, and deal with them accordingly: if they dwell among those that are rebellious they must speak to them the more plainly and pressingly, and take that course that is most likely to work upon them, that they may be left inexcusable. - Matthew Henry

Who have eyes to see - Who has seen more than Israel? To them were given the oracles, the feasts, the sacrifices. Remember those that could still see them that got off the ark, were the same to rebel at Babel. The Israelites in the wilderness witnessed immense signs and wonders, the parting of the Red Sea, being fed from heaven and watered from rocks, yet they murmured and complained. Korah started an uprising against God's prophet and His priest, and they were swallowed up by the earth. These saw that God meant what He said, but they still did not believe.

…24So the Jews gathered around Him and demanded, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25“I already told you,” Jesus replied, “but you did not believe. The works I do in My Father’s name testify on My behalf. 26But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.… John 10: 24-26

…35John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light. 36But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish the very works I am doing— testify about Me that the Father has sent Me. 37And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,… John 5: 35-37

Who have ears to hear - They have been given the prophets, the reading of the word of God, the sure testimony of Scripture. This people has God's law and what it says about those who violate His law, yet they have stupid sayings as well, which we shall see soon enough, that they hear but they don't believe, which is evident in their response. They heard Isaiah, who did speak of things afar off, but he also predicted things that were near, like when Assyria fled from Jerusalem. When he said things they didn't want to hear, as did Jeremiah, and now Ezekiel, they chose to believe against a good record, against the law, and so willfully committed themselves to ignorance. If you will not have the truth then what is left?

…16But not all of them welcomed the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. 18But I ask, did they not hear? Indeed they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”…
…19I ask instead, did Israel not understand? First, Moses says: “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation without understanding.” 20And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.” 21But as for Israel he says: “All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”… Romans 10: 16-21

Prepare for yourself an exile's baggage - Now he is to act out before them someone going into exile, which should be familiar to all of them as exiles. It is a long walk from Jerusalem to Babylon, and one can only take what he can carry and only what he can find to bring.

Perhaps they will understand - This is important, for he is becoming a sign to them, and in this sign is a prophecy that will happen not so far off. They already know what God's word says about sin and about false prophets, but they don't like to believe things that go against their feelings. Now here is another reformer, someone bringing them back to the supremacy of God's word, showing that He will do what He says and that they should not look lightly upon His patience. None of the false prophets have been able to do this, and they continue to give a message of non repentant, insincere works without any remorse over sin, hoping that the temple and their ancestry.com that traces back to Abraham will suffice. Jeremiah said the captivity would be 70 years and called the people to repent, yet these false prophets said 2 years and were idolaters, greedy, sexually immoral themselves, so whose message was more popular?

Dig through the wall - Remember the false prophets continue to advise the puppet king of Judah to rebel, but here is an enactment of him trying to escape when all their words fail.

…3By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food. 4Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah, 5but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was separated from him.… 2 Kings 25: 3-5

You shall cover your face - This is a sign of shame. Jeremiah had already come to Zedekiah and told him what was to take place, but he was easily bullied by those elders that were there. He feared whatever was closer, whatever was in front of him, and he listened to the words of the prophet but did not change his course. It is also a disguise, not wanting to be recognized, probably so no one would say, "he went that way." Also, he has much blood on his hands as the leader of these people, and his failure to do what God said has cost many their lives, by starvation, disease and now the sword. So he probably is afraid to be recognized both by those that would betray him to Babylon and also by those who would like to hang him for poor leadership and now for running away. It was a hoax, a pipe dream, and he didn't stand up.

…2The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him that this is what the LORD says: “Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down. 3And you yourself will not escape his grasp, but will surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You will see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face; and you will go to Babylon. 4Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;… Jeremiah 34: 2-4

Yet he shall not see it - Very interesting, he shall see the king of Babylon, and he will go to Babylon, yet he shall not see Babylon. He sees the king at Riblah, who makes his last sight that of his slaughtered sons, for then they gouge out his eyes, so that both prophets are right, he sees but then he doesn't see.

…6The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where they pronounced judgment on him. 7And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon. 2 Kings 25: 6-7

That they may declare their abominations - We had the word of God, saw the mercies of God, and we forsook God. He has brought upon us Babylon as His own snare, for He is Lord over all, His judgements are true. Those that dishonored Him in His patience will honor Him in His wrath.

With trembling and with anxiety - This is a sign of the coming siege upon Jerusalem. A man will eat his rations, drink his allotment, but not know if this will be his last, how long will the dwindling stores hold out? We know that they will come to eat their own children. It is a maddening thing when there is little food, then the mind things constantly of food, the body eats, but the mind still wants. A siege looks to cut off both water and food from coming in to the city.

The days grow long and every vision comes to nothing - "People have been saying this since Isaiah's time, that God would punish us, but look, we are still here." It actually goes back to Moses, and these stubborn people love their done wisdom sayings, they comfort each other in their ignorance, but Ezekiel will now inform them that this isn't that far off. They also had proverbs in Isaiah and Jeremiah's time about precept upon precept and the burden of the Lord. These were to mock the

The days are prolongedwas actually an act of God’s mercy. “A saying had become current among them because God’s long-suffering, which should have led to repentance, was made an argument against His word.” (Feinberg)

…15Then the LORD appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent. 16And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these people will rise up and prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them. 17On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is no longer with us?’… Deuteronomy 31: 15-17

…12to whom He has said: “This is the place of rest, let the weary rest; this is the place of repose.” But they would not listen. 13Then the word of the LORD to them will become: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there,” so that they will go stumbling backward and will be injured, ensnared, and captured. Isaiah 28: 12-13

…35This is what each man is to say to his friend and to his brother: ‘What has the LORD answered?’ or ‘What has the LORD spoken?’ 36But refer no more to the burden of the LORD, for each man’s word becomes the burden, so that you pervert the words of the living God, the LORD of Hosts, our God. 37Thus you are to say to the prophet: ‘What has the LORD answered you?’ and ‘What has the LORD spoken?’… Jeremiah 23: 35-37

But in your days - It's coming while you still have breath, before your generation passes, and you will know that He is the Lord. Sadly, we don't know how long we will live or what will be the length of God's patience. I use to think when I saw things get bad enough then I would repent, but no, sin does not work that way, unbelief is tied to fixed ignorance.

Spurgeon saw in this an excuse that many make to delay their trust in and surrender to God, especially many young people. “God knows the frivolity of your plea for delay, he knows that you yourself are doubtful about it, and dare not stand to it so as to give it anything like a solemn consideration. Very hard do you try to deceive yourself into an easy state of conscience concerning it, but in your inmost soul you are ashamed of your own falsehoods.” (Spurgeon)

#1141 Ezekiel 11 Part 2 Ichabod

14 And the word of the Lord came to me: 15 “Son of man, your brothers, even your brothers, your kinsmen, the whole house of Israel, all of them, are those of whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far from the Lord; to us this land is given for a possession.’ 16 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Though I removed them far off among the nations, and though I scattered them among the countries, yet I have been a sanctuary to them for a while in the countries where they have gone.’ 17 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.’ 18 And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. 19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”

22 Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them. 23 And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and stood on the mountain that is on the east side of the city. 24 And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to the exiles. Then the vision that I had seen went up from me. 25 And I told the exiles all the things that the Lord had shown me. Ezekiel 11: 14-25

Ezekiel 11: 14-25 Israel's New Heart and Spirit

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

For God So Loved the World

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” John 3: 1-21

Your kinsmen, the whole house of Israel - Those brethren with whom Ezekiel shared this captivity, the brought out ones, sojourners in the land of Babylon.

Are those of whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said - As we have seen in Ezekiel's visions there are those still in Jerusalem, and their leadership has gone apostate. They are resisting Babylon, who has already taken away many, including Ezekiel and his family. There are false prophets there as well as mixed in with the captives who continue to insist upon a 2 year captivity. They have made up a story that they like, and they are holding to it with self determination as to a pseudo faith, and leading others astray. Meanwhile, other leadership has developed what appears to be a back up plan, that if God won't listen to us, if He won't deliver us, then maybe the Queen of Heaven will, or the sun, or Tammuz, or any one the scarab beetles or other unclean spirits etched upon their walls. They have made their own abominations of desolation in their time, and God's glory is leaving this place, they have violated His house.

4 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 5 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. 6 I will set my eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. 7 I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart. Jeremiah 24: 4-7

Go far from the Lord; to us this land is given for a possession - This is what those in Jerusalem have said of those in the captivity. Go far from the Lord, you have lost your part here and are no longer part of us. This is the old language of works, of religion, the language of Job's friends, that surely yours is the greater wrong, there is a reason that you have been sent away. "If I am still here in Jerusalem, then I must be doing it right. Don't even bother coming back, for no one will be your kinsmen redeemer, the land is now ours." Wow, they even had replacement theologians back then, and to them go the spoils.

…18And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What evil is in my hand? 19Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be cursed in the presence of the LORD! For today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ 20So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a flea, like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”… 1 Samuel 26: 18-20

They cut them off from being members of the commonwealth too, as if they had no longer any part or lot in the matter: "Unto us is this land given in possession, and you have forfeited your estates by surrendering to the king of Babylon, and we have thereby become entitled to them." God takes notice of, and is much displeased with, the contempt which those that are in prosperity put upon their brethren that are in affliction. - Matthew Henry

Though I removed them far off...I scattered them...yet I have been a sanctuary to them - This is all under God's sovereign plan, not to eradicate them or disown them, for some are His elect still, a remnant spread about the world, but predestined in Christ Jesus to be brought back to Zion. Going away from Jerusalem is not going away from God, remember, His glory is departing from the temple in which they trust. Remember, He is Creator over all, and there is no where, not even in the belly of a fish, in the depths of the sea, that He cannot see or hear even those things that are unspoken. Who goes into the fire with Shadrach and his friends as they defy the mandate to bow to an idol in a foreign land? Who shuts the mouths of lions for Daniel when He prays to the true God? Salvation is of the Lord, not of a place, not from the leaders in Jerusalem, nor being related to Abraham, nor resisting Nebuchadnezzar in the name of patriotism. They are afraid of losing stuff, they want the land, but they are oblivious to the glory of God that is departing.

I will gather you...and assemble you - He takes credit for both their departure and their return, it is all to the glory of God and the good of those who love Him. It is a marvelous thing; they will not be so mixed with the world as to be indistinguishable from it by God. He will gather them, assemble them and bring them home. He will keep them regardless of the land, and He will be their God regardless of the habits of the culture around them. He will always have His called, His set apart ones. What a great comfort to those in exile, ridiculed by those hypocrites at home, cast off by those pretenders, yet God is saying they are not forever lost.

…38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. 39And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”… John 6: 38-40

…15For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and humble in spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite. 16For I will not accuse you forever, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made. 17I was enraged by his sinful greed, so I struck him and hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the desires of his heart.… Isaiah 57: 15-17

…12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 13 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter. … Matthew 23: 12-13

I will give you the land of Israel - This is high level Sovereignty speaking here. They know it's possible, for those that believe know that God had, at one time, made Himself known to Abraham, the son of Terah, who was a pagan moon god worshiper in the land that the exiles now reside in. He called Abraham out of that place, away from such superstitions and brought him to Canaan, where He increased Abraham's faith. God called up Isaac, Abraham's son, from the barren womb of Sarah, who was passed the time of menstruating, and who had of yet never born a child. God made a unilateral covenant with Abraham, wherein Abraham slept while God passed through the halves. His people later ended up in Egypt where God called them out with many great signs and wonders. Now Babylon has the land, then Persia, but Persia will let some of them return and build a temple, and eventually will come Roman rule then the destruction of the temple in A.D. 70. So many have their eye on that little nation, so many desire to stake their claim, but God's sovereignty is ultimate and infinite.

…18Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Arise, O Balak, and listen; give ear to me, O son of Zippor. 19God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? 20I have indeed received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot change it.… Numbers 23: 18-20

They will remove from it all it's detestable things and all it's abominations - They will come back hating the things which the Lord hates, those things that caused them, as the people who were in the land before them, to be removed. This is the call to repentance heard and received by those who come; they will turn away from their idols.

…18But in this way God has fulfilled what He foretold through all the prophets, saying that His Christ would suffer. 19Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, 20that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus, the Christ, who has been appointed for you.… Acts 3: 18-20

37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”… Acts 2: 37-39

And I will give them one heart - Devoted as a people to the true God, not dispersed anymore.

God will plant good principles in them; he will make the tree good, v. 19. This is a gospel promise, and is made good to all those whom God designs for the heavenly Canaan; for God prepares all for heaven whom he has prepared heaven for. It is promised,
[1.] That God will give them one heart, a heart entire for the true God and not divided as it had been among many gods, a heart firmly fixed and resolved for God and not wavering, steady and uniform, and not inconstant with itself. One heart is a sincere and upright heart, its intentions of a piece with its professions. - Matthew Henry

And a new Spirit I will put within them - To will and to do His good pleasure.

…12So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. 13And in keeping with what is written: “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we who have the same spirit of faith also believe and therefore speak, 14knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in His presence.… 2 Corinthians 4: 12-14

That he will put a new spirit within them, a temper of mind agreeable to the new circumstances into which God in his providence would bring them. All that are sanctified have a new spirit, quite different from what it was; they act from new principles, walk by new rules, and aim at new ends. A new name, or a new face, will not serve without a new spirit. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. - Matthew Henry

…9Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me.… Psalm 51: 9-11

I will remove their heart of stone - A dead heart, belonging to dead men, deaf to the truth, blind to the glory of God, impenetrable to reason, unable to will any good. It is a heart hardened towards the things of God and enslaved to sin. This is the seat of the mind, in flesh that has become defiled by the curse of sin. It is dried up, like untilled ground, rocky soil, where the seed fell, but could not take hold, or was trampled under foot of men.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.… Ephesians 2: 1-2

…17In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.… Romans 7: 17-19

And give them a heart of flesh - This is regeneration, that they may walk in His statutes. With the renewed mind comes new desires, this gift of faith to believe, and a new will that is no longer the bondservant of sin. Oh the battle that begins with the old man.

…24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.  Romans 7: 24-25

That he will give them a heart of flesh, not dead or proud flesh, but living flesh; he will make their hearts sensible of spiritual pains and spiritual pleasures, will make them tender, and apt to receive impressions. This is God's work, it is his gift, his gift by promise; and a wonderful and happy change it is that is wrought by it, from death to life. This is promised to those whom God would bring back to their own land; for then such a change of the condition is for the better indeed when it is accompanied with such a change of the heart; and such a change must be wrought in all those that shall be brought to the better country, that is, the heavenly. - Matthew Henry

…8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.… Ephesians 2: 8-10

But as for those - Those that do not want God may have their sins, but with sin comes it's wages. These are hard teachings for many, but no one gets the God they didn't want, yet some were caused to want the God Who is.

I will recompense their deeds on their own heads: The promise of coming restoration (especially as seen in the new covenant) is not the message of universalism, saying that all will be restored, even if they persist in their rejection of God. For those who follow the desire for their detestable things and their abominations, they will be judged for their sins. - Enduring Word

…22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6: 22-23

And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and stood on the mountain that is on the east side of the city -  This is the Mount of Olives where Jesus often went to pray.

“The rabbis have enumerated ten stages whereby the Shekinah withdrew. These stages unmistakably reveal the loving and longing reluctance of God to leave His sanctuary where He dwelt in the midst of His beloved and erring people. Before He departed, however, He set forth the consoling promise of restoration for the remnant which we have been considering.” (Feinberg)

26So if they tell you, ‘There He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.… Matthew 24: 26-28

#1140 Ezekiel 11 Part 1 Wicked Counselors

The Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the house of the Lord, which faces east. And behold, at the entrance of the gateway there were twenty-five men. And I saw among them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people. 2 And he said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity and who give wicked counsel in this city; 3 who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. This city is the cauldron, and we are the meat.’ 4 Therefore prophesy against them; prophesy, O son of man.”

5 And the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and he said to me, “Say, Thus says the Lord: So you think, O house of Israel. For I know the things that come into your mind. 6 You have multiplied your slain in this city and have filled its streets with the slain. 7 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Your slain whom you have laid in the midst of it, they are the meat, and this city is the cauldron, but you shall be brought out of the midst of it. 8 You have feared the sword, and I will bring the sword upon you, declares the Lord God. 9 And I will bring you out of the midst of it, and give you into the hands of foreigners, and execute judgments upon you. 10 You shall fall by the sword. I will judge you at the border of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 11 This city shall not be your cauldron, nor shall you be the meat in the midst of it. I will judge you at the border of Israel, 12 and you shall know that I am the Lord. For you have not walked in my statutes, nor obeyed my rules, but have acted according to the rules of the nations that are around you.”

13 And it came to pass, while I was prophesying, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then I fell down on my face and cried out with a loud voice and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will you make a full end of the remnant of Israel?”

Israel's New Heart and Spirit

Ezekiel 11 ESV

Ezekiel 11: 1-13 Judgement on Wicked Counselors

Brought me to the East Gate - This is where we last saw the glory of the Lord as it is departing from the temple, and before this was the direction that the 25 elders were facing worshiping that lesser light of the sun.

Jaazaniah and Pelatiah - All were guilty but these represented the group, and would be familiar names to those elders who had already been deported. These were important figures in that they were well known, but also listened to.

Devise iniquity and give wicked counsel - Israel has been plagued with false prophets, those that the Lord did not send, those that offer alternative ways, that encourage sin, and either add or take away from what God has declared. Jeremiah spoke against such as well. See the passages linked below:

The time is not near to build houses - Now this would be truly difficult on it's own, but I believe the understanding of it can be found in Jeremiah 29, where there is communication occurring between the exiles and people in Jerusalem. The false prophets that have been taken into exile are telling the people that the exile will only last 2 years, and the false prophets in Jerusalem are in agreement. Jeremiah is saying in his letter to the people in Babylon, buy houses and settle in for the long haul, you will be there 70 years. They even wrote the leaders in Jerusalem back asking them to shut Jeremiah up; though his words were true they were not popular to those having itching ears.

…4This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles who were carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5“Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat their produce. 6Take wives and have sons and daughters. Take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Multiply there; do not decrease.… Jeremiah 29: 4-6

The city is the cauldron and we are the meat - So this is a form of speaking that was obviously familiar to these people back then, but by itself the analogy is lost on me. Thankfully from what we have of Jeremiah above, and what is said later in verses 14 and 15, we understand that these men are advising against God's word. He is saying repent and be saved, then surrender to Babylon, but these false prophets, apostate priests and wicked governors are saying hold the fort, resist the invasion. They are telling the people in verse 15 that surrender or are taken captive, "go far from the Lord, to us this land is given". They basically see Jerusalem as a force field around them, that the Lord has to be with them as long as they are there, but they have prayed to other gods while the glory of the Lord is departing.

You have multiplied your slain in this city - Your advice, this pseudo faith, that is really just blind will and determination, what you have mustered up and convinced yourself of, this faith that is only stubbornness, unfounded in God's word, you have shared with others. They have followed you into famine, thirst, pestilence, and now comes the sword followed by fire. Your "wisdom" has caused many to perish.

…13But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots. 14Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” 15Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”… Matthew 15: 13-15

But you shall be brought out of the midst of it - Your slain are the meat, they will remain, those you have starved and eaten of, that you told to wait this out or fight. They will cook in this cauldron, but you, however, will be taken outside the camp, the city will not preserve them, nor will it protect you. You will realize that too late, and run for fear of the sword, yet you will be caught and it will devour you. "Oh, but we have the wall, and the temple," and you thought so much of it that you defiled it. Your house is left to you desolate.

…5but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was separated from him. 6The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where they pronounced judgment on him. 7And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.… 2 Kings 25: 5-7

…25Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the scribe of the captain of the army, who had enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city. 26Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27There at Riblah in the land of Hamath, the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death. So Judah was taken into exile, away from its own land.… Jeremiah 52: 25-27

For you have not walked in my statutes - You trusted in symbols, in feast, in the blood of bulls and goats, but God would have obedience rather than sacrifice. You are judged outside the gate, oh what a picture, as one who is cursed, like everyone who is hung upon a tree. Israel wanted the land, but they lived like those who were thrown out, cast away from the land, because of their sin and unbelief.

10And the LORD said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people among whom you live will see the LORD’s work, for it is an awesome thing that I am doing with you. 11Observe what I command you this day. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 12Be careful not to make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land you are entering, lest they become a snare in your midst.… Exodus 34: 10-12

Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died -

“Pelatiah may have been the leader of those who scoffed at God’s word (vv. 1-3). His death was a foretaste of what awaited the rest whom Ezekiel had warned.” (Feinberg)

ii. Vawter and Hoppe say the name Pelatiah means Yahweh preserves a remnant. Block gives the meaning as Yahweh has rescued.

Will you make a full end of the remnant of Israel - Like Moses, Ezekiel falls straight way into the gap, praying for the remnant of  Israel, and the next part is immense so I will save it for it's own post, but it is a beautiful thing. God is still on His throne.

#1139 Ezekiel 10 Part 2 A Beryl of Glory

6 And when he commanded the man clothed in linen, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he went in and stood beside a wheel. 7 And a cherub stretched out his hand from between the cherubim to the fire that was between the cherubim, and took some of it and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out. 8 The cherubim appeared to have the form of a human hand under their wings.

9 And I looked, and behold, there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one beside each cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was like sparkling beryl. 10 And as for their appearance, the four had the same likeness, as if a wheel were within a wheel. 11 When they went, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went, but in whatever direction the front wheel faced, the others followed without turning as they went. 12 And their whole body, their rims, and their spokes, their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes all around—the wheels that the four of them had. 13 As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing “the whirling wheels.” 14 And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of the cherub, and the second face was a human face, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15 And the cherubim mounted up. These were the living creatures that I saw by the Chebar canal. 16 And when the cherubim went, the wheels went beside them. And when the cherubim lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the wheels did not turn from beside them. 17 When they stood still, these stood still, and when they mounted up, these mounted up with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.

18 Then the glory of the Lord went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim. 19 And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth before my eyes as they went out, with the wheels beside them. And they stood at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the Lord, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

20 These were the living creatures that I saw underneath the God of Israel by the Chebar canal; and I knew that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces, and each four wings, and underneath their wings the likeness of human hands. 22 And as for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the Chebar canal. Each one of them went straight forward. Ezekiel 10: 6-22 ESV

Ezekiel 10: 6-22 Glory Departing From the East Gate

…21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes. 22Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, 23so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.… John 5: 21-23

And when He commanded the man clothed in linen - The messenger, the angel with the seal in the prior chapter, that marked those set apart for mercy, I think this very likely a Theophany. I grow more convinced that this is the Angel of the Lord, Jesus preincarnate.

Take fire from between the whirling wheels - This is God's fire, from His chariot seat between the Cherubim. His glory is moving along with His throne. The place of His foot rest will be empty, the ark of the covenant will have lost the substance of it's meaning. As the glory of God departs, His justice comes, and it will consume the temple that has been perverted. This is not Who He is or what He is about, so what does He have left here. If they repented then He was their deliverer, but they will not repent. He is holy and they despise His very nature. God will not be party to apostasy. Judgment has come to this house.

…13So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight. 14Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.” 15Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.” So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.… 2 Kings 1: 13-15

…48When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” 49“Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” 50But they did not understand the statement He was making to them.… Luke 2: 48-50

…33So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?” 34 Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work. 35Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.… John 4: 33-35

…29and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 30I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 31If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.… John 5: 29-31

A cherub stretched out his hand to the fire - This leads him to observe now that they appear to have something in the likeness of a hand beneath their wings, and it ties them to the description in chapter 1.

The appearance of the wheels was like sparkling beryl - Beryl has been described as clear in it's pure form, yellow/green, aquamarine, deep green as a type known as emerald and even pinks and deep blue. The colors are based upon impurities in the mix. Beryl was one of the precious stones that represented one of the 12 tribes that the priest wore on his breastplate.

15 “You shall make a breastpiece of judgment, in skilled work. In the style of the ephod you shall make it—of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen shall you make it. 16 It shall be square and doubled, a span its length and a span its breadth. 17 You shall set in it four rows of stones. A row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle shall be the first row; 18 and the second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19 and the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 20 and the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. They shall be set in gold filigree. 21 There shall be twelve stones with their names according to the names of the sons of Israel. They shall be like signets, each engraved with its name, for the twelve tribes - Exodus 28: 15-21

The first face was the face of the cherub - Interesting, the word cherub here replaces the word ox in the description from Ezekiel 1.

These were the living creatures that I saw by the Chebar canal - He references the vision of Ezekiel 1, probably making the connection for his readers, but maybe to some degree for himself as well.

And they stood at the entrance of the east gate - God never abdicates His heavenly throne, for that temple remains constant, unmoved. Everything is under the sovereignty of a God that is above all these things. The wheels turn as the Spirit leads, they follow the glory as it departs. It is now at the East gate.

…18to those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts. 19The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. 20Bless the LORD, all His angels mighty in strength who carry out His word, who hearken to the voice of His command.… Psalm 103: 18-20

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, 2asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” 3When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.… Matthew 2: 1-3

1This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me? Or where will My place of repose be? 2Has not My hand made all these things? And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.… Isaiah 66: 1-2

“The Jews dreamed that God could not depart from his temple; indeed, whilst it was his, and used as his, he did not, nor would he depart, but he will abandon it when profaned, and thereby made not his.” (Poole)

It is striking and shocking thought that the glory of God was about to leave the temple altogether. Yet, Ezekiel also will later tell us (Ezekiel 43:2-4) that it will come back. “But turn to xliii. 2-4. The glory of the Lord returned to the renovated temple. Like the dawn of a new day; like the sound of many waters, it came, it came. ‘This,’ God said, ‘is the place of My throne… and the house of Israel shall no more defile.’” (Meyer)

iii. “Note that when the Lord does finally return, He is seen coming back through the East Gate (Ezekiel 43.4).” (Wright)
