#1149 Ezekiel 17 Drought Hardy

The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel; 3 say, Thus says the Lord God: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, rich in plumage of many colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar. 4 He broke off the topmost of its young twigs and carried it to a land of trade and set it in a city of merchants. 5 Then he took of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil. He placed it beside abundant waters. He set it like a willow twig, 6 and it sprouted and became a low spreading vine, and its branches turned toward him, and its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out boughs.

7 “And there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage, and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and shot forth its branches toward him from the bed where it was planted, that he might water it. 8 It had been planted on good soil by abundant waters, that it might produce branches and bear fruit and become a noble vine.

9 “Say, Thus says the Lord God: Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers, so that all its fresh sprouting leaves wither? It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it from its roots. 10 Behold, it is planted; will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind strikes it—wither away on the bed where it sprouted?”

11 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Say now to the rebellious house, Do you not know what these things mean? Tell them, behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took her king and her princes and brought them to him to Babylon. 13 And he took one of the royal offspring and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath (the chief men of the land he had taken away), 14 that the kingdom might be humble and not lift itself up, and keep his covenant that it might stand. 15 But he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and a large army. Will he thrive? Can one escape who does such things? Can he break the covenant and yet escape?

16 “As I live, declares the Lord God, surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant with him he broke, in Babylon he shall die. 17 Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company will not help him in war, when mounds are cast up and siege walls built to cut off many lives. 18 He despised the oath in breaking the covenant, and behold, he gave his hand and did all these things; he shall not escape. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely it is my oath that he despised, and my covenant that he broke. I will return it upon his head. 20 I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon and enter into judgment with him there for the treachery he has committed against me. 21 And all the pick of his troops shall fall by the sword, and the survivors shall be scattered to every wind, and you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken.”

22 Thus says the Lord God: “I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord; I bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.” Ezekiel 17 ESV

Ezekiel 17 Two Eagles and a Vine

Propound a riddle - This people took for granted the simple and straight, hearing but not understanding. A riddle is not straightforward in the reading or the hearing, the meaning or intent is not always readily apparent, but it causes the listener to engage. I have to think about this, and not take for granted that I already know or feel the gravity of the point the speaker is making. Sometimes the meaning is withheld, and such is judgment, but sometimes the meaning is given after the picture.

“Riddles exercise the wit, and parables help the memory, and excite both attention and affection.” (Trapp)

10Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do You speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.… Matthew 13: 10-12

1-8 - A great eagle - The king of Babylon in all his finery.

“It is interesting to note that often the eagle was used symbolically in the OT to represent God’s punitive power (Deuteronomy 28:49) and the speed with which a conqueror advanced (Isaiah 46:11; Jeremiah 48:40; 49:22).” (Alexander)

Of many colors - Probably as a Tidal king over many nations, an empire.

Lebanon - Known for it's cedars, used in the building of the king's palace in Jerusalem. This signifies royalty.

He broke off the topmost of its young twigs - All the best and brightest, the most promising and strong of the land, he took back to Babylon. Among these imports were Daniel and Ezekiel. This increased the tidal kings knowledge bank at home, and it decreased the strength of the conquered nation to resist. Those rising stars, now placed in another region of the sky, to the east of Jerusalem. Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, was also removed.

Land of trade - This is an aspect always tied to the name Babylon.

…10In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.” 11And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because there is no one left to buy their cargo— 12cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; of fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; of all kinds of citron wood and every article of ivory, precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble;… Revelation 18: 10-12

He took of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil - There were those that were aloud to remain in the land, as one writer call them, "a tributary" kingdom. They are neither the Tigris or the mighty Euphrates, but a branch, not the river but a stream. Nebuchadnezzar set them up to succeed as a part of his empire "beside abundant waters".

A low spreading vine - This would be from a place of humility, allowed to flourish, but within the covenant of peace, under Babylonian rule.

And there was another great eagle - The crutch of Israel, Egypt, an old habit that was very hard to break.

This would be Pharaoh Apries, a.k.a. Hophra (588 to 568 B.C.). Cited from J Mac Study Bible

…15you are to appoint over yourselves the king whom the LORD your God shall choose. Appoint a king from among your brothers; you are not to set over yourselves a foreigner who is not one of your brothers. 16But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’ 17He must not take many wives for himself, lest his heart go astray. He must not accumulate for himself large amounts of silver and gold.… Deuteronomy 17: 15-17

This vine bent it's roots toward him - Zedekiah breaks his treaty with Nebuchadnezzar to court an alliance with Hophra. This vine was doing well in the soil that was provided to it and growing fine on the waters of Babylon. They received not only mercy but benevolence from their conqueror. So, very much reflective of Israel's relationship to God, there is no apparent reason for their sudden departure. They were warned by Jeremiah not to resist or break this covenant, yet here they think the waters of Egypt will be at least sweeter if not cooler.

…12And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD. 13He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. But Zedekiah stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel. 14Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.… 2 Chronicles 36: 12-14

…5Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem. 6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says that you are to tell the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Egypt.… Jeremiah 37: 5-7

9-24 - Will it thrive - Instead of sinking her roots deep, to the wells that would sustain from drought, she turns and runs shallow, so that she may drink from the Nile. So the listeners have this before them, what will the one who planted them do when he realizes he has been betrayed, that Jacob has again played the deceiver? You know exactly what will happen, he will pull it up by the roots.

It will not take a strong arm - It's a shallow root, and all they will need is a force that can put them under siege. The east wind will blow dry, and without water, cut off from nutrition, the vine will wither. Now Pharaoh, like all kings, has probably promised protection but overestimated his own strength. Israel has fed Assyria's ego before and now turns south, but God has warned them not to.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Psalm 1 KJV

Tell them - Now he explains the parable to them.

As I live - God swears by the highest thing, Himself. Zedekiah was not even a real king, not recognized by the prophet as such, for he was under vassal authority. He was given an opportunity by the king of Babylon to stay in his home land and rule with the support of Nebuchadnezzar. He went into a covenant agreement with the king, but was now breaking it. God sees the covenant, God, Who says thou shalt not lie, and swears to punish Zedekiah for breaking it. God rebukes and punishes His people, and this is yet another instance where they poorly represent Him, Who made them a nation to begin with. This is the way of the world to promise and not deliver, to swear but cross your fingers. It causes them to stink.

The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 15 Only on this condition will we agree with you—that you will become as we are by every male among you being circumcised. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people. 17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.”

18 Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem. 19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his father's house. 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, 21 “These men are at peace with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us to become one people—when every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their livestock, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us.” 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came against the city while it felt secure and killed all the males. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem's house and went away. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. 29 All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.” 31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?” Genesis 34: 13-31

He despised the oath - They were empty words, and this is a people who had been taught that God hated lying, bearing false witness, and the breaking of covenants. He often uses the institute of marriage, that great covenant which God established, as a lesson to compare with our relationship with God. They sought other gods, preferred the lie over the truth, prostituted themselves to other waters.

Taken in my snare -

…4When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and they went out along the route to the Arabah. 5But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They seized him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced judgment on him. 6There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also killed all the nobles of Judah.… Jeremiah 39: 4-6

I Myself will take a sprig - This goes back to the branch, the son of David, Messiah. The day will come when God will remove wicked, bumbling rulers, and set up His righteous kingdom.

…2On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors. 3 Whoever remains in Zion and whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living— 4when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.… Isaiah 4: 2-4

…4I will raise up shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or dismayed, nor will any go missing, declares the LORD. 5Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. 6In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.… Jeremiah 23: 4-6

#1148 Ezekiel 16 Part 2 She Was A Real Haughty

15 “But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your renown and lavished your whorings on any passerby; your beauty became his. 16 You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful shrines, and on them played the whore. The like has never been, nor ever shall be. 17 You also took your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself images of men, and with them played the whore. 18 And you took your embroidered garments to cover them, and set my oil and my incense before them. 19 Also my bread that I gave you—I fed you with fine flour and oil and honey—you set before them for a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord God. 20 And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your whorings so small a matter 21 that you slaughtered my children and delivered them up as an offering by fire to them? 22 And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.

23 “And after all your wickedness (woe, woe to you! declares the Lord God), 24 you built yourself a vaulted chamber and made yourself a lofty place in every square. 25 At the head of every street you built your lofty place and made your beauty an abomination, offering yourself to any passerby and multiplying your whoring. 26 You also played the whore with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, multiplying your whoring, to provoke me to anger. 27 Behold, therefore, I stretched out my hand against you and diminished your allotted portion and delivered you to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior. 28 You played the whore also with the Assyrians, because you were not satisfied; yes, you played the whore with them, and still you were not satisfied. 29 You multiplied your whoring also with the trading land of Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.

30 “How sick is your heart, declares the Lord God, because you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute, 31 building your vaulted chamber at the head of every street, and making your lofty place in every square. Yet you were not like a prostitute, because you scorned payment. 32 Adulterous wife, who receives strangers instead of her husband! 33 Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from every side with your whorings. 34 So you were different from other women in your whorings. No one solicited you to play the whore, and you gave payment, while no payment was given to you; therefore you were different.

35 “Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the Lord: 36 Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, 37 therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness. 38 And I will judge you as women who commit adultery and shed blood are judged, and bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. 39 And I will give you into their hands, and they shall throw down your vaulted chamber and break down your lofty places. They shall strip you of your clothes and take your beautiful jewels and leave you naked and bare. 40 They shall bring up a crowd against you, and they shall stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 And they shall burn your houses and execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women. I will make you stop playing the whore, and you shall also give payment no more. 42 So will I satisfy my wrath on you, and my jealousy shall depart from you. I will be calm and will no more be angry. 43 Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have enraged me with all these things, therefore, behold, I have returned your deeds upon your head, declares the Lord God. Have you not committed lewdness in addition to all your abominations?

44 “Behold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ 45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. 46 And your elder sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters. 47 Not only did you walk in their ways and do according to their abominations; within a very little time you were more corrupt than they in all your ways. 48 As I live, declares the Lord God, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. 49 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did an abomination before me. So I removed them, when I saw it. 51 Samaria has not committed half your sins. You have committed more abominations than they, and have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations that you have committed. 52 Bear your disgrace, you also, for you have intervened on behalf of your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. So be ashamed, you also, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

53 “I will restore their fortunes, both the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your own fortunes in their midst, 54 that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all that you have done, becoming a consolation to them. 55 As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former state, and you and your daughters shall return to your former state. 56 Was not your sister Sodom a byword in your mouth in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered? Now you have become an object of reproach for the daughters of Syria and all those around her, and for the daughters of the Philistines, those all around who despise you. 58 You bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, declares the Lord.

The Lord's Everlasting Covenant

59 “For thus says the Lord God: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant, 60 yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you take your sisters, both your elder and your younger, and I give them to you as daughters, but not on account of the covenant with you. 62 I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 16: 15-63 ESV

Ezekiel 16: 15-63

…11Your pomp has been brought down to Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your blanket. 12How you have fallen from heaven, O day star, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations. 13You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north.… Isaiah 14: 11-13

15-29 But you trusted in your beauty - Pride is the antagonist of reality, the truth that all else other than God is created by God. Satan was made beautiful, the king of Tyre, the kings of Babylon saw the things they could do with the minds and materials God had made, and they lifted themselves up, declared themselves what they cannot be. How much freedom lies just on top of that knoll, to just get there, see the nail pierced feet, hear Him cry, "it is finished", and realizing that you can do nothing of yourself, you kneel there and believe. What has pride done for you? You trusted in your beauty, in the things that He gave you, and now none of it is sacred.

Of My gold and of My silver - What things He gives us to honor Him with, which would be our hearts purest and greatest joy, yet we keep that from ourselves by worshiping the gold and silver that is already His. You make the metal into images, and you worship men.

6Brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written. Then you will not take pride in one man over another. 7For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? 8Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!… 1 Corinthians 4: 6-8

“It is an ill sign in any of us when God’s blessings are themselves made into idols. If thou beginnest to worship thy wealth, thy health, thy children, thy learning, or anything that God has given thee, this is exceedingly provoking to the Most High; it is a breach of the marriage covenant between thy soul and God.” (Spurgeon)

Set My oil and My incense - This seems to take a deeper, more spiritual context. I think this is not only the guilt of Israel back then, but also of the church today. We take the things of God, the sacraments, the name of God, the idea of church and worship, and we distort it into something blended and defiled by the world. It is no longer His bride set apart, but a whore dressed in finery, bathed in oil, and covered in perfume and paint to conceal the decay within. She is pointing you to herself, and that is death.

34The LORD also said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense—in equal measures, 35and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. 36Grind some of it into fine powder and place it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you.…
…37You are never to use this formula to make incense for yourselves; you shall regard it as holy to the LORD. 38Anyone who makes something like it to enjoy its fragrance shall be cut off from his people.” Exodus 30: 34-38

That you slaughtered My children - We may call it a lot of things, but none of them steeped in reality when we refuse to admit that life belongs to God. They offered up their children to idols, and we do the same today.

You did not remember the day of your youth - When you were helpless and weak, He had compassion on you, but you see the advantage in their not being able to speak, not being able to defend themselves, and you sacrifice them on the altar of your lust and convenience. It is not that you don't worship anything, not that you don't believe in a god, but rather you think you are God. What a gloriously high calling, to pour your life into a child's, but the world has taught you to distain this. Your egotism has forgotten where you came from.

13Then the little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray for them. And the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15And after He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there.… Matthew 19: 13-15

A vaulted chamber...high places - Brothels, strip clubs, places of carved images, where people go to worship against true worship. Such is much of the so called church today; trying to fill seats like an amphitheater, finding what show will sell the best, what play, what style of music. No one is there so much to worship God as they are to be entertained. It is a sick place, a bastard of the world, trying so hard to imitate everything the world does, but looking nothing like Christ and not even a good reproduction of the world it wants to mimic.

Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior - You have caused them to blush, and for this I have to commend them that they were still able when you were not.

30-43 Yet you were not like a prostitute - They would do this for pay, men would bring them gifts. You sent out gifts, invited Assyria to be your daddy for pay, even when you knew God offered a better way. It is more the principal for you, that you must have your way, must stay in your delusion, and will not repent no matter what the cost. This is the height of foolishness, paying others to abuse you, to use you, all to attack the One Who loved you and caused you to live. No payment was given to you. You went back to Egypt, you served gods made with hands and imagination, but you turned your nose to the Creator.

Commit adultery and shed blood - The punishment under the Mosaic law is death. Herein is pride's problem with God, that though we commit such crimes, yet we do not want the consequences. This is a lofty place indeed, that we may look down upon all other life that we deem beneath ours.

…5And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose hand your lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from anyone who takes the life of his fellow man: 6Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood will be shed; for in His own image God has made mankind. 7But as for you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out across the earth and multiply upon it.”… Genesis 9: 5-7

…6They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger. 7 When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.” 8And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.… John 8: 6-8

27You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  Matthew 5: 27-28

I have returned your deeds upon your head - Though she forgot her roots and her vows, He did not.

“In order that she might remember him once again, God would bring this discipline on her. Though mankind may forget God, his love prevents him from forgetting his own. God takes his commitments in personal relationships seriously.” (Alexander)

44-58 Like mother, like daughter - You came from lost, pagan nations, but you were made alive unto knowledge, God revealed Himself to you, yet you returned to the sin of your mother. You went around saying, "Sodomite", and they were a byword to you, just like the Samaritans would be later, but I say Sodom is your mother and Samaria your sister. You have more in common with them than your husband. They put a premium on their pleasures, defying God's moral law, casting out the widow, destroying the fatherless, and you, who have so great a lamp, hid it under a bushel, so that you could join them in darkness.

10Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11“What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?” says the LORD. “I am full from the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I take no delight in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.… Isaiah 1: 10-11

…43Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!… John 8: 43-45

59-63 - Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed - This is the richness of blessing, and those that are forgiven much do love much. Here is fruit of true repentance, when a soul comes to life and realizes that it was dead. It is a shame, I have read that this chapter is often left out in the public reading because of it's tug upon the heart, it's soreness to the soul, the hammer that it is upon the ego. Not many  a listener can stand up under this, just like the Jews, even today, pass over the reading of Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12 in the daily reading of the synagogue. It is CONVICTION, and we hate it, but it is the gospel call, and who has the right to elevate man's fragile ego in deciding what God can say and what we will hear?

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.… Matthew 5: 3-5

1This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me? Or where will My place of repose be? 2Has not My hand made all these things? And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word. 3Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man; whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck; whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood; whoever offers frankincense is like one who blesses an idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.… Isaiah 66: 1-3

When I atone for you - The blood of bulls and rams was never a permanent solution, but here they see a glimpse of God atoning for them. The ancients expected a Messiah, but they focused more on their ideal of a king, not a substitutionary atonement. It is when you accept the conviction, acknowledge the indictment of this chapter, rather than skip over it, you instead own it, that is when you find grace, mercy in time of need. Without light you will never know how beautiful salvation is.

…4because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me. 6In burnt offerings and sin offerings You took no delight.… Hebrews 10: 4-6

#1147 Ezekiel 16 Part 1 "Live"

Again the word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations, 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. 4 And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. 5 No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born.

6 “And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ 7 I made you flourish like a plant of the field. And you grew up and became tall and arrived at full adornment. Your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown; yet you were naked and bare.

8 “When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine. 9 Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil. 10 I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk. 11 And I adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. 12 And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. 14 And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.

62 I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 16 ESV

Ezekiel: 1-14 16 Faithless Bride

Make known to Jerusalem her abominations - Who is faithful to do so in every age? If I looked across a vast plain, a battle field, and saw you somehow standing next to the Creator, and we knew each other, yet you never told me, warned me, and now He is coming to recompense God for my crimes. Now you acknowledge that He is just and I am not, but what kept you from warning me of this before? Oh, you didn't want to hurt my feelings, you liked our relationship the way it was, you feared my displeasure with you, so you thought that much of me that you didn't warn me of that which bore eternal ramifications. We laughed together, ate together, we shared those things together. Now this is the kindness of God. He sends prophet after prophet, Moses, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and so on. They write these words down, so that they can be tested. You have a book called the Bible that is filled with plain language, word pictures, rituals, the law, the prophets, history and testimony. You can see the fall of man, the Seed promised in Genesis, the scape goat, the Passover lamb, read Psalm 22, written a thousand years before Christ, and then read Isaiah 52-53. There is a history here of warning of the wrath to come.

…5He sent still another, and this one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed. 6 Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. 7But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’… Mark 12: 5-7

Or did he, do you think, proceed to point out to them the doom which must inevitably befall them, because they had broken the divine law, and violated God's holy statutes? No, my brethren; if he had been about to show to the then unprivileged gentiles their iniquity, he might have proceeded on legal grounds; he was now however about to deal with Jerusalem, the highly-favoured city, and here he does not bring to their mind the law; he does not begin dealing out law-thunders to them at all; he fetches obligations as his arguments to convince them of sin from the grace of God, rather than from the law of God. And, my brethren, as I am about this evening to address you who profess to be followers of the Son of God, and who by faith have "fled for refuge to the hope set before you in the gospel," as my business is to convince you of sin, I shall not begin by taking you to Sinai, I shall not attempt to show you what the law is, and what that penalty is which devolves upon every man that breaks it; but, feeling that you are not under the law, but under grace, I shall draw arguments from the grace of God, from his gospel, from the favour which he has shown to you arguments more powerful than any which can be fetched from the law, to show you the greatness of your sin, and the abomination of any iniquity which you have committed against the Lord your God. - C. H. Spurgeon

Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites - You were spiritually no different than those whom you would dispossess. Canaan was under a curse, but so are you, under the curse of sin, dead in your trespasses and sins, unable to find the way, unable to save yourself. This is the state I found you in.

…24When Noah awoke from his drunkenness and learned what his youngest son had done to him, 25he said, “Cursed be Canaan! A servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.” Genesis 9: 24-25

9What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. 10As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one. 11There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.… Romans 3: 9-11

As for your birth - They physically come from Abraham, who was as good as one dead, for like the Psalmist said, "surely I was brought forth in iniquity." There is no inheritance of salvation, no lineage, this faith must be born in each one anew. Abraham believed by faith, and this faith was not of himself, but a gift from God.

Hath the Lord loved us, though there was nothing in our birth or parentage to invite regard or merit esteem? Then surely every sin that we commit now, is aggravated by that sovereign choice, that infinite compassion that doated upon us, though our birth was vile, and our original base. Didst thou take me from the dunghill, O my God, and do I sin against thee? Didst thou take the beggar in his rags and lift him up to make him sit among thy sons and daughters, the very blood-royal of heaven? And has that beggar afterwards become a rebel against thee? Oh sin, thou art an accursed thing indeed! When I think of that grace which has thus honored the dishonorable, exalted the mean things of this world, and saved creatures that were the offscouring of creation, how I blush for the ingratitude that can forget such tender obligations, and do despite to such extraordinary unmerited goodness! Further, the prophet goes on to say that not only their parentage was base, but their condition was dangerous in the extreme. That which was absolutely necessary for the life of an infant had in this case been utterly neglected. - C. H. Spurgeon

…4Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and blameless when You judge. 5Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. 6Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.… Psalm 51: 4-6

Your cord was not cut - you were feral and of feral parentage, a spiritual travesty, a hopeless situation. You would not have known who you were, where you fell from or where you were going.

Nor were you washed with water - There was no attempt to remove you from or from you the filth of this state. You are greatly contaminated with no one to show you, no one to pick you up, no one to wash you clean. This is the state of every man, lost like this, spiritually dead.

…6Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.… Psalm 51: 6-8

…4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6This is the Spirit He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,… Titus 3: 4-6

Nor wrapped you in swaddling clothes - Vanquished to the cold of dark, embraced only by ignorance and fear.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.… Ephesians 2: 1-2

17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts. 19Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity, with a craving for more.… Ephesians 4: 17-19

For you were abhorred - No one had compassion, your race had fallen away, was a byword, Creation destroyed, sin is a detested thing and you were it's child. From the human race, all of lost humanity, God sees Israel in her infancy, not able to bring herself into being, nor once here cause herself to continue. He sees this little waif and remembers.

I said to you, in your blood, "LIVE" - Be born again. "Lazarus, come forth." He reminds them it was all of Mercy, the power of His word, the life from His breath.

…13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself. 14So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,… Ephesians 5: 13-15

…12And having been buried with Him in baptism, you were raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, 14having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!… Colossians 2: 12-14

…7The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.… Deuteronomy 7: 7-9

I made you flourish like a plant of the field -

Naked and bare...nakedness - The second is clearly defined by the coming of age, the pubescent time of maturing into womanhood.

Feinberg - “The foundling became a beautiful young woman, yet it is stated that she was naked and bare. The implication may be that she was without wealth and without the benefits of culture and civilization, as the world sees them.”

According to Block, your hair grew refers to the metaphorical young woman’s pubic hair. “With the passing of the age of innocence and the arrival of sexual maturity, nakedness assumes moral overtones. Whereas the earlier nakedness had made the foundling vulnerable to the elements and marauding animals, now she stands exposed to dangers of a different sort.” (Block)

I spread the corner of My garment - Many pictures in the Big Book and all speak about God's redemptive plan.

8At midnight, Boaz was startled, turned over, and there lying at his feet was a woman! 9“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a kinsman-redeemer.” 10Then Boaz said, “May the LORD bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.… Ruth 3: 8-10

I clothed you with embroidered cloth - Israel was treated as a royal betrothed. She is lifted from obscurity, from certain death, clothed and adored.

…18On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the creatures that crawl on the ground. And I will abolish bow and sword and weapons of war in the land, and will make them lie down in safety. 19So I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in loving devotion and compassion. 20And I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.”… Hosea 2: 18-20

A ring on your nose - Common in the middle and near east.

…46She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels. 47Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists. 48Then I bowed down and worshiped the LORD; and I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right road to take the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.… Genesis 24: 46-48

Your renown went forth among the nations - This has covered Israel in a picture from her infancy all the way to her renown in the times of Solomon.
