#1439 Luke 22 Part 5 Bag Lunch

35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.” Luke 22: 35-38 ESV

Luke 22: 35-38 Knapsack

We just left off with the humbling conversation between Peter and Jesus, where Jesus tells him that he will deny the Lord Jesus, despite what he thinks. He also gives him warning so he knows that he can come back, that it is not over, and he will need to lead the others back as well. The best leaders are those that have been tried, that have been beaten down, found themselves insufficient in themselves, turned to Christ and then warned others of the pitfalls along the way. You can't lead well if you haven't followed, and more than most aren't worth following, they don't count because they are going in the wrong direction.

1You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. 2Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you. 3But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.… 1 Corinthians 11: 1-3

…7which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse! 9As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse!… Galatians 1: 7-9

When I sent you out with no money bag - As part of their training they were sent out with next to nothing so that they could see that God would provide.

…9Do not carry any gold or silver or copper in your belts. 10Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions. 11Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.… Matthew 10: 9-11

Lenski - They learned the great lesson of absolute trust in their Sender. He did provide for them through the name and the fame with which he had filled all Galilee. Never once had he failed them. (Lenski New Testament Commentary – The Interpretation of St. Luke's Gospel) - Precept Austin

Nothing - They went out with nothing but lacked nothing.

V.36 But now let the one who has a money bag take it - This is a complete turn around from their previous outings. Jesus, the One Whom they follow, is going to die, and in most cultures that does not make you appear to be the victor. His fame is going to subside, and His disciples will become the objects of open persecution. All of them will be martyred except one, John, and so they will move from a time of peace to a time of war. The Great commission of "go ye into all the world and preach", will be helped along by them getting kicked out of every place they settle down in. They are still set upon the immediacy of the kingdom, even at His resurrection, instead will come wars, rumors of wars, famine and persecution. It's not going to be a hero's welcome.

…19If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. 20Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept My word, they will keep yours as well. 21But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.… John 15: 19-21

For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me - It is imperative that this happens, inevitable, unavoidable. It is part of Holy Writ, God breathed, so it must happen just like this, as Isaiah said in chapter 53. "But', you say, 'that was 700 years ago, what does that have to do with now, haven't things changed? Do we really need someone to die for our sins, are we really that bad off?" More than you will ever understand in this life. I have been a Christian for some 20 years now and I only become more offended by myself. I have laid some things aside, but I realize that is Christ living in me, because of myself there was no good thing. I followed rules at times, tried to vote on the right side of issues, but would then find myself plagued by all these grievous characters, wicked thoughts, that were all just me, prideful, arrogant, me. I only come to see the desperation more, the hopelessness of mankind, the blindness of thinking they will develop a formula, create a world system that works this time. For now, men seem content to just take what God has deemed sin, damnable, and say it is not. Yet, here we are, in the book of Luke, some 700 years after one of God's prophets said something, over 4000 years after God promised the Seed of the woman in the garden, and here is Jesus, just like Moses said in Deuteronomy, that cursed is everyone who hangs from a tree.

…11After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities. 12Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53: 11-12

…12The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.… Galatians 3: 12-14

…18Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Arise, O Balak, and listen; give ear to me, O son of Zippor. 19God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? 20I have indeed received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot change it.… Numbers 23: 18-20

And He was numbered with the transgressors - He is innocent and so the statement bears great meaning, the innocent for the guilty. God does not change his stance towards sin, even in His mercy towards us, payment was exacted.

…7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him!… Romans 5: 7-9

#1438 Luke 22 Part 4 Let Me Tell You About The Rooster

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” Luke 22: 31-34 ESV

Luke 22: 31-34

Simon, Simon - They had just been arguing over who was going to be the greatest, and note that Christ does not say, "Peter", but goes back to his old name, Simon, and twice, like when your teacher corrects you, "Calvin, Calvin, what am I going to do with you?" It's like having your mom call you by your full name, you know you are being dressed down, she is disappointed, and here Christ brings some unwanted and unbelieved reality to the situation.

…41He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ). 42Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter). 43The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.”… John 1: 41-43

…16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.… Matthew 16: 16-18

Satan demanded to have you - This is not the first or last time that the devil has made such a request. One of the scariest passages in all of Scripture is when the devil and his demons come before God and request to test Job. It is a terrible and frightening line, "Consider my servant Job", and I should prefer that my name not be brought up in such conversations, but it is a great comfort for me to know that Satan has to ask permission from my Master before he can do anything against me. It is ultimately the hand of the Lord, to His greatness and glory, and my growth. Remember what we talked about before, the devil is God's devil so no need to be superstitious, and we should not speak beyond what we know. Those who challenge such creatures speak beyond their means for they are much more powerful than you or I, and you are but a chihuahua barking at a T-Rex so talk to God and not demons, and be mindful of your place.

…7“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.” 8Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.” 9Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?…
…10Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.… Job 1: 7-12

5 Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

8 Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10 But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam's error and perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. Jude 5-13

V. 32 I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail - Jesus is the great intercessor, and we see the character of this type in Moses when he would be the intermediary for the people, falling on his face before God, taking the place of humility for those that were to stupid to prostrate themselves.

1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.… 1 John 2: 1-3

…7maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” 8Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped. 9“O Lord,” he said, “if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, my Lord, please go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our iniquity and sin, and take us as Your inheritance.”… Exodus 34: 7-9

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 And they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth. 4 And suddenly the Lord said to Moses and to Aaron and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.” And the three of them came out. 5 And the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” 9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and he departed.

10 When the cloud removed from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, like snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous. 11 And Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, do not punish us because we have done foolishly and have sinned. 12 Let her not be as one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes out of his mother's womb.” 13 And Moses cried to the Lord, “O God, please heal her—please.” 14 But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut outside the camp seven days, and after that she may be brought in again.” 15 So Miriam was shut outside the camp seven days, and the people did not set out on the march till Miriam was brought in again. 16 After that the people set out from Hazeroth, and camped in the wilderness of Paran. Numbers 12: 1-16

V. 32b And when you have turned again strengthen your brothers - This would also be comforting, Jesus foretelling your repentance and return to your post. It is also a revelation for the others that they will need Peter to encourage them after his own fall. This means that they will be shaken and scattered as well. They can't see it yet, but knowing Who is saying it should have been enough, regardless of the way we like to see ourselves.

…2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and not all members have the same function,… Romans 12: 2-4

V. 33 Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death - Again, someone who knows better than God does. I have found that men talk like this though, that we shadow box with our words, but there is no preparing for something like what is coming other than complete trust in the Words of the Savior. We are all brave when we are walking with our big friend who can beat anyone in a fight, we talk beyond our own ability, like drunks do, we go about crowing in the yard, but what if they take your friend? What if you find yourself alone? Will you be able to stand? Peter has misplaced his faith in his resolve, in his own ability and toughness. The man who doesn't trust himself is the smartest man you will ever meet.

…19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28: 19-20

…5“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered. 6So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts. 7What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain. Then he will bring forth the capstone accompanied by shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’ ”… Zechariah 4: 5-7

…16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.… Ephesians 6: 16-18

I tell you, Peter - He is calling him back with the name He gave him, and like a Father to a child, saying, "stop, listen, this is non-negotiable."

The rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know Me - He is really preparing him, first by telling him that Satan is coming for him, then by telling him He knows this and is praying for him. Next in the outline is Christ's forgiveness in advance, that Peter will return and needs to go comfort the others. He is preparing them for an evil day. Peter doesn't want to believe it, "Jesus, if you knew me, really knew me, then you would know that I got your back bro." So Jesus amplifies it even more, and gives him a sign so that he will know when it took place, but can look back upon this conversation and seek forgiveness. You are going to deny Me thrice and then hear the rooster crow. There is no other scenario, even with being warned, you are going to pee yourself, you will feel the courage drain out of you like someone pulled a plug, and you will lie like a scared little boy. I cry just thinking about it. I have held an image of myself that has fallen so many times in the reality of a moment, when things are ugly, when I should have been looking to Jesus, but was dumb enough to believe in self.

#1437 Luke 22 Part 3 Servant Leader

24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Luke 22: 24-30 ESV

Luke 22: 24-30

MacArthur - Nothing comes more naturally to fallen human beings than pride, manifesting itself in self-centeredness, self-love, self-promotion, and self-fulfillment. Pride is the defining sin of fallen human nature, the soil in which all other sins sprout, take root, and grow. It is the damning sin that produced angelic rebellion against God and sought to topple Him from His throne as the sovereign ruler of the universe. It produced the sin of Eve and Adam, plunging the race into corruption. That pride has been reclassified as a virtue throughout history and in contemporary society only reveals the depths of human depravity. Isaiah wrote of such a wicked reversal of reality, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isa. 5:20)....Jesus’ warning of His impending suffering and death (Lk 9:44) and their need to be willing to suffer (Lk 9:23-26) had not sunk in with the apostles (Lk 9:45-46). They still were focused on the crown instead of the cross; on the glory, not the suffering. Still anticipating the imminent arrival of the kingdom, an argument started among them as to their place in it. Ironically, while Jesus spoke of His personal suffering, they argued about their personal glory. (See The MacArthur New Testament Commentary) - Precept Austin

A dispute also arose among them - Jesus just told them about His going to suffer, yet again. It's easy to arm chair quarterback this one, hindsight is 20/20 after all, and we are left aghast, but only because of our own pride, no different than those that virtue signal today. Oh, we say, "I would never deny my faith, I would never disappoint my Lord like that", but haven't you? Every time I sin I defy the right of the Creator to tell me, His creation, how to live, act and respond. Every time I hate someone I elevate myself as though I was somewhat less needing as a sinner, a better type of sinner, rebel, rejecter of God's law and Kingship. Every time I fear man in the face of doing what's right versus flying under the radar, every time I refuse to forgive my neighbor or pray for my enemy, has God not spoken to these matters, is He in the wrong? It's all over our world right now, pride has become a virtue, "I am the greatest, worship yourself and the world will follow." Those who follow that don't follow Jesus though, and He says, "deny yourself, take up your cross, and come follow Me." I would rather be the slave of Christ than the king of men, though it flies in the face of my ego, yet my Lord suffered, He was humble, He lead the way in all that.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13

The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them - As a follower of Christ you are not part of that structure, there is no need for you to politic, plot and snake your way up the ladder. You do your best, like Joseph, whether as a slave in Potiphar's house, a prisoner in jail, or as second to Pharaoh as God place him to save the people of that time from famine. At work you have bosses who just tell people what to do and cannot handle hearing when they are wrong. They promote suck ups and in turn inbreed the worst sort of management. A leader on the other hand is different than the average boss, his title puts weight upon his own shoulders and he surrounds himself with people that are not afraid to challenge him or tell him when he's wrong. Why? Because he is grounded enough to know that he can be wrong, and he wants to do what's right, not pretend at it, not spin things to sound better than they are, but actually turn from the wrong direction, get on the right path and reward his team for getting everyone there.

Satan is always fomenting our pride. And the best response is to gather around the Word and pray the Word (Jn 1:1, Rev 19:13) as a group. That's the next best thing to having a personal audience with Jesus. My daughter has a friend who is a leader in the church and whose marriage is experiencing severe testing. When several of the women she knew agreed to come over to her home and pray for this woman and her spousal strife, the Spirit laid on my daughter's heart to lead the time of prayer so that it was somewhat structured. She is a reluctant leader, but obeyed and sent all the ladies Scriptures to ponder before they gathered, asking them to bring other Scriptures to the prayer meeting. The upshot is that it was a wonderful time of hearing the voice of Jesus via the Spirit and the Word and all participants sensed God's favor on the meeting.

Wiersbe explains that "The Romans in particular vied for honors and did all they could, legally and illegally, to win promotion and recognition, but they are not the examples for us to follow. (Borrow Be courageous Luke 14-24)

The leader as the one who serves - Jesus wants them to let go of their egos, the striving to be heard, to be seen as the greatest, the GOAT, let it not enter your mind, let it not create factions. In church situations I have found sometimes it is better to walk away if a thing cannot be reconciled or it remains a sore point for others whenever they see you. The loud ones don't want to serve, they want to be revered, held up and served, how unlike the Lord Whom they preach. You will never experience so much freedom in this life as the day you decide to work as unto the Lord and not worry what men think of you, or what others have that you do not.

…27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” 29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.… Matthew 20: 277-29

For who is greater - Well, duh, the one who reclines, it's all over the internet and tv, they are always reclining at the Oscars, at large festivals, in stadiums, at fancy restaurants, beside pools and on yachts, surrounded by an entourage of people that make sure they know how special they are.

But I am among you as the one who serves - The greater than Solomon, God the Son, Himself, the maker and ruler of the world is here before you, and you know no one greater than Him, and He has made Himself a servant. What should His followers be like then?

…41The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here. 42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here. Matthew 12: 41-42

You are those who have stayed with Me in My trials - They are the ones chosen of, called by God to do so, and the one that would be greatest will learn to be the least.

Have stood (continued) (1265)(diameno from dia = intensifies meaning + meno = to remain or abide) means to remain permanently (dia = through so "to remain through" is the idea) or to continue in the same place or condition (cf Lk 1:22+). When diameno is used to describe people as in this passage it means to remain constant or to stand by. The perfect tense signifies they had begun in the past to stand with Jesus and remained standing with Him. This is interesting in that they would soon temporarily flee out of fear of the authorities, but they would return and remain standing, tradition recording that all except John doing so to the point of martyrdom. Are you standing with Christ? Of course ultimately we can stand with Him because His Spirit in us enables us to stand. Jude writes "Now to Him Who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy." (Jude 1:24+)

In John 6 we see a contrasting response among those who followed Jesus

As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 Simon Peter (WHO DENIED HIM TEMPORARILY) answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.(John 6:66-68). - Precept Austin

I assign to you - "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you." Keep your focus on Him, on His word, and you need not worry about titles. The gravity of it is you are not fit to lead if you cannot serve, and they have much to learn as do we all.

#1436 Luke 22 Part 2 Do This In Remembrance Of Me

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. Luke 22: 7-23 ESV

Luke 22: 7-23

…17So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your divisions out of the land of Egypt. You must keep this day as a permanent statute for the generations to come. 18In the first month you are to eat unleavened bread, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19For seven days there must be no leaven found in your houses. If anyone eats something leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.… Exodus 12: 17-19

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread - The start of the Passover Week.

Darrell Bock gives an excellent summary of this next section - Luke loves meals. This is his seventh meal scene; it is also one of his most dramatic (see Luke 5:29-32; Luke 7:36-50; Luke 9:12-17; Luke 10:38-42; Luke 11:37-54; Luke 14:1-24; two more remain, Luke 24:28-32, Luke 24:36-43). At the dinner table friends can enjoy fellowship and reflect on events. Such an intimate occasion is the setting for Jesus' final words to his disciples. Added to the intimacy of the scene is its timing. A Passover meal is being celebrated (vv. Luke 22:7-9).During the celebration of God's saving of Israel, Jesus will discuss his sacrifice on behalf of his disciples. It will be a meal to remember, not only because this event forms the basis of the Lord's Supper but also because Jesus predicts a betrayal, defines true leadership, promises authority to the eleven, predicts Peter's failure and warns of coming rejection. Even as he faces death, Jesus serves by preparing others for their task. (Luke 22:1-38 Betrayal and a Farewell)

Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed - Remember that Luke has already told us that the term day of Unleavened Bread is synonymous with the Passover. So this day is the Passover, Nisan 14 (Ex 12:6; Lev 23:5, 6) the day when the lambs had to be sacrificed. The actual Feast of Unleavened Bread followed for the next 7 days (Nisan 15-21).

Passover (Lk 22:1, 7, 8, 11, 13, 15)(3957)(pascha) depending on the context refers to the Passover lamb (Lk 22:7), the Passover meal (Lk 22:8), or the festival of Passover (Lk 22:1). - Precept Austin

Jesus sent Peter and John - These were in Jesus' inner circle, and there was a need to keep this quiet, the place to remain unknown to others because there was a traitor in their midst.

A man carrying a jar of water will meet you - Just like God provided the Ram in the thicket, the donkey upon which Jesus made His Messianic entry, so now there is a room dedicated for this very sacred meal. It is to be a place a setting foundational to the churches history and her doctrines.

John MacArthur helps understand the difference between John and the Synoptic Gospels

The chronological reckoning between John's gospel and the synoptics presents a challenge, especially in relation to the time of the Last Supper (John 13:2). While the synoptics portray the disciples and the Lord at the Last Supper as eating the Passover meal on Thursday evening (Nisan 14) and Jesus being crucified on Friday, John's gospel states that the Jews did not enter into the Praetorium "so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover" (John 18:28). So, the disciples had eaten the Passover on Thursday evening, but the Jews had not. In fact, John (John 19:14) states that Jesus' trial and crucifixion were on the day of Preparation for the Passover and not after the eating of the Passover, so that with the trial and crucifixion on Friday Christ was actually sacrificed at the same time the Passover lambs were being slain (John 19:14). The question is, "Why did the disciples eat the Passover meal on Thursday?"

The answer lies in a difference among the Jews in the way they reckoned the beginning and ending of days. From Josephus, the Mishna, and other ancient Jewish sources we learn that the Jews in northern Palestine calculated days from sunrise to sunrise. That area included the region of Galilee, where Jesus and all the disciples, except Judas, had grown up. Apparently most, if not all, of the Pharisees used that system of reckoning. But Jews in the southern part, which centered in Jerusalem, calculated days from sunset to sunset. Because all the priests necessarily lived in or near Jerusalem, as did most of the Sadducees, those groups followed the southern scheme.

That variation doubtlessly caused confusion at times, but it also had some practical benefits. During Passover time, for instance, it allowed for the feast to be celebrated legitimately on two adjoining days, thereby permitting the temple sacrifices to be made over a total period of four hours rather than two. That separation of days may also have had the effect of reducing both regional and religious clashes between the two groups.

On that basis the seeming contradictions in the gospel accounts are easily explained. Being Galileans, Jesus and the disciples considered Passover day to have started at sunrise on Thursday and to end at sunrise on Friday. The Jewish leaders who arrested and tried Jesus, being mostly priests and Sadducees, considered Passover day to begin at sunset on Thursday and end at sunset on Friday. By that variation, predetermined by God's sovereign provision, Jesus could thereby legitimately celebrate the last Passover meal with His disciples and yet still be sacrificed on Passover day.

Once again one can see how God sovereignly and marvelously provides for the precise fulfillment of His redemptive plan. Jesus was anything but a victim of men's wicked schemes, much less of blind circumstance. Every word He spoke and every action He took were divinely directed and secured. Even the words and actions by others against Him were divinely controlled. See, e.g., John 11:49-52; 19:11. (Interpretative Difficulties) (See another discussion by MacArthur in his sermon on Mt 26:17-19 The Last Passover Part 1) - Precept Austin

Before I suffer - Again He makes known to them His coming persecution, His death. The human mind is a fragile place though, even in the presence of much evidence to the truth, it will seek out a different ending for what has already been written. The disciples are not very receptive of this, and when it happens they will scatter like sheep, and Peter will even deny Christ 3 times.

21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22“The Son of Man must suffer many things,” He said. “He must be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” 23Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.… Luke 9: 21-23

21From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!” 23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”… Matthew 16: 21-23

V. 18 I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes - This points to a future Kingdom, an abstinence from this by Jesus till then. Hence the Last Supper of the present age.

…43As you saw the iron mixed with clay, so the peoples will mix with one another, but will not hold together any more than iron mixes with clay. 44In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will shatter all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, but will itself stand forever. 45And just as you saw a stone being cut out of the mountain without human hands, and it shattered the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold, so the great God has told the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”… Daniel 2: 43-45

For I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God" - The key word is "until" which is an expression of time that means something will continue to happen up to a point and then it will not happen. In this context until is used with a negative (never = literally a strong double negative in Greek, ou me, absolutely never) to emphasize the moment in time after which the rest of your statement becomes true. In other words the glorious truth is that in the coming Kingdom of God which Messiah sets up when He returns as Victorious King of kings, all believers will join with Him in celebration of the Passover feast. While this could represent only the marriage supper of the Lamb, some believe it will be a continual feast throughout eternity. We will have to wait and see! (Rev 19:9+ - see note below) (See Marriage of the Lamb) Of course there are commentaries that do not accept a Messianic earthly Kingdom (i.e., amillennialists) but interpret Jesus as speaking of a heavenly kingdom. I sometimes wonder what the amillennialist do with passages like Ezekiel 45:21 which clearly states "In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall have the Passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten." Ezekiel 40-48 describes the time of the Millennium thus the Passover will be celebrated in the Millennial Kingdom.

The actual word "again" is not in the Greek text, so the ESV has a more accurate "For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." You may be asking, "Well so what? Does that make any difference in what Jesus is saying?" Some have reasoned that what Jesus is saying is that while He longed to eat it (Lk 22:15), He would not do it at this time. Darrell Bock writes that "This subtle view seems unnecessary, especially since Luke 22:16, 18 suggest that Jesus did eat this meal (Fitzmyer 1985: 1396)." (Baker Exegetical Commentary) In a similar way when we compare Jesus' words about drinking wine in Mt 26:29, He clearly states "I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's Kingdom." The phrase "from now on" surely indicates He did partake of the wine, and it would simply make no sense to suggest He partook of the wine and not the bread at this, His last Passover.

What the Bible teaches - He did not say, "I will not eat", but "I will not ... eat thereof" i.e. of the Passover; for after He had risen, He ate a broiled piece of fish and a piece of honeycomb as powerful evidence to His disciples that He was truly alive (Lk 24:42+). The next time that He will partake of it will be with a redeemed Israel when the kingdom of God is manifested. (What the Bible teaches – Luke) - Precept Austin

V. 19 This is My body - He is tying the Passover to Himself, that was the point of  the representation, it was all a story about Him. Note, He says, "do this in remembrance of Me", the bread and the wine do not become Him anymore than the unleavened bread, the lamb or the Ram in the bush. There are some cults like Roman Catholicism that teach that the bread and wine become His actual body and blood in a really bad doctrine called transubstantiation. Every lamb that was slain in the OT showed the wages of sin, that the penalty for sin was death, and it taught the need of a substitutionary atonement, the innocent for the guilty. Jesus death was once and for all.

…9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God. 11So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.… Romans 6: 9-11

The New Covenant in My blood - Abraham had a covenant with God, a unilateral covenant wherein he killed animals, split them into pieces leaving a path between them. In such a covenant the two parties walk between the animals, a covenant of blood, but instead Abraham fell to sleep and God walked through the halves alone. He was the initiator and the fulfiller. Men, fallen as we are, cannot reconcile ourselves to God, we cannot hold up our end, therefore God must become a Man, Christ, in order to satisfy the covenant. In the Mosaic Covenant of the Law, "do this and you shall live", man proves himself incapable. We need a Savior.

The hand of him who betrays Me - We all of course know this to be Judas now, and the name itself has fallen out of popularity because it has become synonymous with traitor. It was a popular name before because of a Jewish hero, Judas Maccabeus.

…4because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me. 6In burnt offerings and sin offerings You took no delight.… Hebrews :-

…13And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.” 14Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.… Hebrews 2: 13-15
