#1155 Micah 3 Is It Not For You

And I said:
Hear, you heads of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel!
Is it not for you to know justice?—
2 you who hate the good and love the evil,
who tear the skin from off my people
and their flesh from off their bones,
3 who eat the flesh of my people,
and flay their skin from off them,
and break their bones in pieces
and chop them up like meat in a pot,
like flesh in a cauldron.

4 Then they will cry to the Lord,
but he will not answer them;
he will hide his face from them at that time,
because they have made their deeds evil.

5 Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets
who lead my people astray,
who cry “Peace”
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
who puts nothing into their mouths.
6 Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
and darkness to you, without divination.
The sun shall go down on the prophets,
and the day shall be black over them;
7 the seers shall be disgraced,
and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
for there is no answer from God.
8 But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
and to Israel his sin.

9 Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel,
who detest justice
and make crooked all that is straight,
10 who build Zion with blood
and Jerusalem with iniquity.
11 Its heads give judgment for a bribe;
its priests teach for a price;
its prophets practice divination for money;
yet they lean on the Lord and say,
“Is not the Lord in the midst of us?
No disaster shall come upon us.”
12 Therefore because of you
Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
and the mountain of the house a wooded height. Micah 3 ESV

Micah 3 ESV

13 ‘Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’

14 “You answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’

15 “So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.

16 “Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him.

17 ‘You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ Deuteronomy 1: 13-17

Hear, you heads of Jacob - Micah has addressed the wealthy, which would include some of these influential as well, but these are those that sit in the offices of government, those that are judges over the people. It is an interesting pattern, that kings do not consider themselves so approachable, nor did many of the ruling class see themselves as under the laws that they were supposed to oversee, yet here is a prophet. Like Spurgeon once said, "if God calls you to be a minister, don't stoop to becoming a king", if Micah was sent by God then the king needs to hear the messenger of the King of kings.

1Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As surely as the LORD lives—the God of Israel before whom I stand—there will be neither dew nor rain in these years except at my word!” 2Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah: 3“Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.… 1 kings 17: 1-3

Is it not for you to know justice - A rhetorical question, and they know that the answer should be yes, but the reality is that there is a prophet here, so you have not done justly. I watch politicians all the time, promise a lot, just like the false prophets and tv evangelists, but they have corrupted the very idea of justice, so how can they do true justice? God has distinguished right from wrong, and saying you don't believe in Him will not make the reality of the Creator go away. Saying you do believe in Him, but govern in a way that He rejects, your belief is shallow, the demons believe that way, and they will be judged accordingly. God is above you, you cannot be a great leader or consistently just if you do not fear the Sovereign of the Universe.

5 He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city.

6 He said to the judges, “Consider what you are doing, for you do not judge for man but for the Lord who is with you when you render judgment.

7 “Now then let the fear of the Lord be upon you; be very careful what you do, for the Lord our God will have no part in unrighteousness or partiality or the taking of a bribe.”

8 In Jerusalem also Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites and priests, and some of the heads of the fathers’ households of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord and to judge disputes among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

9 Then he charged them saying, “Thus you shall do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully and wholeheartedly.

10 “Whenever any dispute comes to you from your brethren who live in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you shall warn them so that they may not be guilty before the Lord, and wrath may not come on you and your brethren. Thus you shall do and you will not be guilty. 2 Chronicles 19: 5-10

You, who hate the good and love the evil - God even went so far as to call the rulers of Jerusalem, "you rulers of Sodom", those whom he kicked out of the land long before them. We always flatter ourselves that it is going to be different for us, and we accuse God of unfairness when He is just. Most kings and politicians will not take responsibility for their actions, only for things that go well, and often when that was by no effort of their own. Blame the messenger.

10Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11“What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?” says the LORD. “I am full from the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I take no delight in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.… Isaiah 1: 10-11

16So Obadiah went to inform Ahab, who went to meet Elijah. 17 When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” 18“I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.… 1 Kings 18: 16-18

Who eat the flesh of my people - When leadership fails the people suffer, and as figurative as this may seem here, yet when they come under siege, at that time they ate their own children, and then it was too late, the king could do nothing but rent his clothes.

…3All have turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. 4Will the workers of iniquity never learn? They devour my people like bread; they refuse to call upon the LORD. 5There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is in the company of the righteous.… Psalm 14: 3-5

…12The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock. 13The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep. 14I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me,… John 10: 12-14

Then they will cry to the Lord - God has been speaking to them for centuries, through His prophets, through the law, the story of Sodom, the story of Benjamin, the Flood, and as the tension builds, the cup fills, and the Lord of all the earth must do justice, yet as the cup tips they tell the watchmen to be silent and or be silenced. Now His wrath comes, He avenges the blood of the prophets, He takes up the cause of the poor, God answers the outcry against them, and now they cry out to God, but it is in vain, it is only about their discomfort. It is better to receive injustice in this life than give it.

…30A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land. 31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority. My people love it so, but what will you do in the end? Jeremiah 5: 30-31

…40You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me. 41They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but He did not answer. 42I ground them as dust in the face of the wind; I trampled them like mud in the streets.… Psalm 18: 40-42

…12They made their hearts like flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of Hosts. 13And just as I had called and they would not listen, so when they called I would not listen, says the LORD of Hosts. 14But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known, and the land was left desolate behind them so that no one could come or go. Thus they turned the pleasant land into a desolation.”… Zechariah 7: 12-14

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets - He moves from the leaders who were supposed to govern according to the Law of God, to the prophets who were supposed to counsel the people and leaders according to the Word of God.

Who cry "Peace" - They claimed to be prophets and then told people what they wanted to hear, everyone likes peace and prosperity, no one wants the whole counsel of God.

…26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27For I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole will of God. 28Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.… Acts 20: 26-28

When they have something to eat - They are motivated by their stomachs and their eyes, they love power, money and bling.

When they have something to bite with their teeth - I.e., something to eat. These greedy prophets are motivated by what they can gain (cf Mic 3:11). Paul warned about these genre of men

For many (NB: "many" not "few"!) walk (speaks of the general conduct of their life), of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the Cross of Christ, whose end is destruction (apoleia = not loss of existence but much worse loss of purpose for their existence!), whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. (Php 3:18-19-note) - Precept Austin

Davis - As long as the prophets are feeding on the ‘perks’ people give them, they promise those folk prosperity and success (‘peace’). (Ed: This sounds like the modern day "prosperity gospel!" "Snakes" always seem to slither into the sanctuary!)

Declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths - A "holy war", against their enemies, it is no different than the mafia or bad government, only worse because they claim to speak on behalf of God, but it is really only the voice of their greed. Separate yourselves from these, call them out.

Davis - There is nothing wrong with a prophet receiving a ‘clergy fee’. As Achtemeier points out, it was customary for prophets in Israel to be given gifts or fees in return for services (1Sa 9:7–8; 1Kings 14:3; 2Kings 4:42; 8:7–9). The sin of Micah’s opponents, however, is that ‘they are letting the size of the fee determine the content of their prophecy’. If you were to butter them up and stump up the shekels from your money-market account, there was a ‘prosperity gospel’ for you. The prophet’s eyes would light up and he would exclaim, ‘Something good is going to happen to you!’ - Precept Austin

The seers shall be disgraced - The politicians promise and don't deliver, the prophets speak about peace when destruction is what is actually coming.

…2And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land. 3And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not remain alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will pierce him through. 4And on that day every prophet who prophesies will be ashamed of his vision, and he will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive.… Zechariah 13: 2-4

With the Spirit - The one actually filled with God's spirit was bringing a message of sin and judgment, meant to convict, but the false prophets continued to do their best to detract from it.

Make crooked all that is straight - He is back to the leaders, he has addressed both the leaders and the prophets, so don't say you didn't know or you trusted them, Micah has spoken to the prophets who lie to you, who say peace when it's really destruction. He has tried to bring reform back to what God has said of prophets from of old. You just prefer what they say over what God says.

…27Like cages full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have become powerful and rich. 28They have grown fat and sleek, and have excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have not taken up the cause of the fatherless, that they might prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the needy. 29Should I not punish them for these things?” declares the LORD. “Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?… Jeremiah 5: 27-29

1If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you, 2and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,” 3you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul.… Deuteronomy 13: 1-3

Who build Zion with bloodshed - This is a disappointment, men will often invert justice, like the BLM lady who said that stealing was retribution, and the people who were stealing that did not know the name of the man they were "peacefully protesting" for. We murder infant humans that can't speak for themselves and say it is just and compassionate; we are a twisted people, justice is unknown to us, we have called good evil and evil good.

25 “There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her.

26 “Her priests have done violence to My law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

27 “Her princes within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and destroying lives in order to get dishonest gain.

28 “Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken. Ezekiel 22: 25-28

Judgment for a bribe - The scales are no longer blind; they see dollar signs. The poor cannot afford justice and the prophets don't call it out.

…10Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they are dreamers lying around, loving to slumber. 11Like ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are shepherds with no discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain: 12“Come, let me get the wine, let us imbibe the strong drink, and tomorrow will be like today, only far better!”… Isaiah 56: 10-12

Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins - We treat those that are our own flesh in a manner that would cause us to scream out for justice for ourselves, but not for them. Look at the words of Christ after he speaks about the widow who gave her last penny, a sight that was only moving and objectionable to Him, and so His words were taken into the walls.

…2and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3“Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”…
5As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said, 6“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”… Luke 21: 2-7

#1154 Micah 2 Flipping Widows

Woe to those who devise wickedness
and work evil on their beds!
When the morning dawns, they perform it,
because it is in the power of their hand.
2 They covet fields and seize them,
and houses, and take them away;
they oppress a man and his house,
a man and his inheritance.
3 Therefore thus says the Lord:
behold, against this family I am devising disaster,
from which you cannot remove your necks,
and you shall not walk haughtily,
for it will be a time of disaster.
4 In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you
and moan bitterly,
and say, “We are utterly ruined;
he changes the portion of my people;
how he removes it from me!
To an apostate he allots our fields.”
5 Therefore you will have none to cast the line by lot
in the assembly of the Lord.

6 “Do not preach”—thus they preach—
“one should not preach of such things;
disgrace will not overtake us.”
7 Should this be said, O house of Jacob?
Has the Lord grown impatient?
Are these his deeds?
Do not my words do good
to him who walks uprightly?
8 But lately my people have risen up as an enemy;
you strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly
with no thought of war.
9 The women of my people you drive out
from their delightful houses;
from their young children you take away
my splendor forever.
10 Arise and go,
for this is no place to rest,
because of uncleanness that destroys
with a grievous destruction.
11 If a man should go about and utter wind and lies,
saying, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,”
he would be the preacher for this people!
12 I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob;
I will gather the remnant of Israel;
I will set them together
like sheep in a fold,
like a flock in its pasture,
a noisy multitude of men.
13 He who opens the breach goes up before them;
they break through and pass the gate,
going out by it.
Their king passes on before them,
the Lord at their head. Micah 2 ESV

Micah 2

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds - A warning to the schemers, the people who would advance themselves upon another's misfortune, and author the misfortune to do so, that every step be upon the neck of their neighbor. You lay in bed dreaming of the time to pounce, looking for ways to work a broken system, hunting for dishonest gain. You plot, you hate, you worship yourself and rejoice at the sound of your neighbor's demise, cha-ching, that's all you hear.

…7In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, the Pur (that is, the lot) was cast before Haman to determine a day and month. And the lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar. 8Then Haman informed King Xerxes, “There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the peoples of every province of your kingdom. Their laws are different from everyone else’s, and they do not obey the king’s laws. So it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them. 9If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will deposit ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury to pay those who carry it out.”… Esther 3: 7-9

1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men. Protect me from men of violence, 2who devise evil in their hearts and stir up war all day long. 3They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers is on their lips. Selah… Psalm 140: 1-3

Because it's in the power of their hand - They plotted all night, convinced themselves that might makes right, that this is not a human being or at least not at my level. I want to do this, I crave the end, and so the means do not bother me so much; if I don't take advantage of this opportunity someone else will. If ability is the measure of whether something is right to do, then there is nothing wrong in all that is done. But, God has sent this prophet saying that your capital, your strength, your speed, your intellect, ability to justify it to yourself, appease your own mind, the fact that it doesn't make you feel bad, that none of that matters to God. He is saying that this is not the measure. Your personal beliefs, opinions, feelings, talent, how many and whoever else may agree with you, that's not the bar, God word is, and no matter how angry it makes you, no matter how much you want your own way, He will judge according to His. This prophet has brought you the mercy of hearing the truth, the opportunity to turn towards God and escape His eternal wrath. That you had the power in your hand to do evil means that you also had the means to do good, to seek justice, to protect the innocent.

…28But you did not even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. Now you have done a foolish thing. 29 I have power to do you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’ 30Now you have gone off because you long for your father’s house. But why have you stolen my gods?”… Genesis 31: 28-30

…26for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from the snare. 27Do not withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act. 28Do not tell your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I will provide”—when you already have the means.… Proverbs 3: 26-28

They covet fields and seize them - Now the prophet gives us examples of what is going on, and he says, "a man and his inheritance", so we need a little background to understand this; the Jews basically lived in a Theocracy which had laws passed down to them from God, even laws regarding property, real-estate. Allotments were given to families and the price of "buying", more like leasing a field, was based upon how far out you were from the year of Jubilee, because every 50 years all properties were returned to their original families. "Woe to men when they build house upon house", I have heard many a preacher talk about that verse and relate it to living in cities or apartments, building on top of ruins, but I think there is more still. One of the things that Jesus came after the Pharisees and other religious rulers for was cheating widows out of their houses and orphans from their inheritance.

8Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land. 9I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become desolate, great mansions left unoccupied.…  Isaiah 5: 8-9

…16He took up the cause of the poor and needy, and so it went well with him. Is this not what it means to know Me?” declares the LORD. 17“But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except your own dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood, on practicing extortion and oppression.” 18Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’ They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’… Jeremiah 22: 16-18

Against this family I am devising disaster - They plotted against their neighbor as God had instructed them not to, so now those that plot have God planning against them. He says, "you shall not walk haughtily," pride allows men to see themselves above others, but a righteous Judge will now put you in your true place. The two greatest commandments, they have broken the first in that "if you love Me keep My commandments, feed my sheep," they have not obeyed God Who would prefer that over religious ritual. The breaking of the second proved they had not kept the first, for it is God Who gives the laws concerning our neighbors, that we love them as ourselves.

As John Calvin said "“It is the peculiar office of God…to render to each the measure of evil they have brought on others” This reminds one of See Jesus' teaching on "an eye for an eye" (Lex Talionis) (Mt 5:38-39-note)

In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you - These are the rich landowners that have plotted against the poor, amassed properties that God did not intend for them to keep, now they become the example of what not to do, a sarcastic song. God is coming in justice.

To an apostate He allots our fields - God takes away even that which was theirs under the law, their family allotment. Now they mourn as those whom they had defrauded, and they bitterly grit upon the song of kindergarteners, "oh you poor thing, it's not fair when it's you, but you didn't shed a tear for your neighbor." Now God is giving their lands to a foreigner or one of the apostates who helped the foreigners take the land, a traitor, as they were to their own.

…28The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness, and confusion of mind, 29and at noon you will grope about like a blind man in the darkness. You will not prosper in your ways. Day after day you will be oppressed and plundered, with no one to save you. 30You will be pledged in marriage to a woman, but another man will violate her. You will build a house but will not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but will not enjoy its fruit.… Deuteronomy 28: 28-30

You will have none to cast the line by lot - You made others homeless by not honoring God's allotments of what He made, and so you have handed the same measure to yourself and your posterity. God is giving you the same respect you gave Him. We are doing it your way, but you are on the bad side of your planning now. You are reaping what you sewed.

…9So the men departed and went throughout the land, mapping it city by city into seven portions. Then they returned with the document to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh. 10And Joshua cast lots for them in the presence of the LORD at Shiloh, where he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their divisions. Joshua 18: 9-10

…60The temple servants and descendants of the servants of Solomon numbered 392 in all. 61The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but could not prove that their families were descended from Israel: 62the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, and the descendants of Nekoda, 642 in all.… Nehemiah 7: 60-62

"Do not preach" - thus they preach - This is the apostate prophets', priests' and teachers' sermon, it is about Micah, they don't like his message. That is the world always, "don't say what I don't want to hear, that was mean, that made me feel bad about myself, Micha, you're not an encourager." They would rather be coddled and tickled to hell.

NET Note - “‘Do not foam at the mouth,’ they foam at the mouth.” The verb נָטַף (nataf) means “to drip.” When used of speech it probably has the nuance “to drivel, to foam at the mouth” (HALOT 694 s.v. נטף). The sinful people tell the LORD’s prophets not to “foam at the mouth,” which probably refers in a derogatory way to their impassioned style of delivery. But the LORD (who is probably still speaking here, see Mic 2:3) sarcastically refers to their (the false prophet's) impassioned exhortation as “foaming at the mouth.” - Precept Austin

"One should not preach of such things" - Don't say this is going to happen, that God is calling what we are engaged in sin, that He is coming to us in judgement, that we shall be disgraced. In every age there are those who call the truth hateful and try to silence the messenger. I know them, have been them, "oh, this church isn't my style, the pastor says things that make me uncomfortable, so I need to find something else, somewhere that I fit in better. All this talk of sin and judgment, I need a church that doesn't preach all the passages of scripture, a place that recognizes what a special sort of snowflake I am, where my opinion matters, my feelings count." Their message is that Micha needs to leave out the hard stuff, they don't want the whole counsel, but the problem is that God is the one giving it.

10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words, 11for this is what Amos has said: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’ ”… Amos 7: 10-11

17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely. 18I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book.… Revelation 22: 17-19

…21The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.” 22But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams. 23For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”… 1 Samuel 15: 21-23

You strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly - None of God's laws matter to them until they are on the windward side. They don't honor His word.

…26If you take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral, return it to him by sunset, 27because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? And if he cries out to Me, I will hear, for I am compassionate. 28You must not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.… Exodus 22: 26-28

…17When he had come near to her, the woman asked, “Are you Joab?” “I am,” he replied. “Listen to the words of your servant,” she said. “I am listening,” he answered. 18Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Seek counsel at Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled. 19I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?”… 2 Samuel 20: 17-19

…8Then the Israelites took 200,000 captives from their kinsmen—women, sons, and daughters. They also carried off a great deal of plunder and brought it to Samaria. 9But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches up to heaven. 10And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?… 2 Chronicles 28: 8-10

The women of my people you drive out from their delightful houses - They were predators when it came to the poor, defrauding the widows and orphans. When they took from these widows and left them destitute they often created the orphan, for the widow was either worked to death for their sakes or starved.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Matthew 23: 14

…26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless. 27Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1: 26-27

He would be the preacher for this people - All he has to do is say empty things, clichés, and preach a message that encourages their excesses. "You're not greedy, when you steal it is really god just blessing you. Get drunk, get laid, whatever makes you happy, and if he doesn't then find another, if she doesn't then have her put away." You finally found the church and pastor you wanted, its a social, feel good sort of place, where worship is about entertaining you, and the preaching is more pragmatic, it helped you get a good deal on a car today. You learned that "teamwork makes the dream work." For small group this week we are going to blindfold ourselves, listen to an episode of Dr. Phil while we fall backwards and catch each other, now that's how we grow.

…21Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD. 22And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’ 23So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced disaster against you.”… 1 Kings 22: 21-23

…13“Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’ ” 14“The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,” replied the LORD. “I did not send them or appoint them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a false vision, a worthless divination, the futility and delusion of their own minds. 15Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end!… Jeremiah 14: 13-15

…13“For from the least of them to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice deceit. 14They dress the wound of My people with very little care, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace at all. 15Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will collapse,” says the LORD.… Jeremiah 6: 13-15

I will gather the remnant of  Israel - After all of this, there is still hope, and certainly we should see that He will have to do this, for they are toilsome without Him, yet without progress and always falling away. They need a Shepherd, a promised Redeemer, a Deliverer, and this is the direction in which Micah is headed, to point to Christ.

…7For this is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations! Make your praises heard, and say, ‘O LORD, save Your people, the remnant of Israel!’ 8Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a great assembly! 9They will come with weeping, and by their supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path where they will not stumble. For I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My firstborn.”… Jeremiah 31: 7-9

He, who opens the breach, goes up before them - The Way, He said He is the Way, and this is chilling, but in a good way, we don't base truth upon our feeling, but what wonderful feeling come in knowing the truth, that hope of Messiah's return.

John Phillips - The Messiah is the One who clears the way. Just as He marched ahead of His people when they came out of Egypt into the promised land, so He will march ahead of them in a coming day. He will clear out of their way the beast, the false prophet, and the massed armies of the world.

Just as the Lord went before His people in the pillar of fire and the cloud through the wilderness, so three times in Mic 2:13 we are told He will go before His people to guide them (cf. Ex 13:21; Dt 1:30, 33; Isa 52:12).

This Breaker can be none other than the Messiah Himself. It is He who will clear the way for the people to break out of their enemies’ cities, passing through as if there were no gates. This messianic interpretation can be confirmed by the fact that “the Breaker” is also referred to in Mic 2:13 as “their King” and “the LORD.” All of Israel’s blessings will be realized in the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ." - Precept Austin

MacArthur - Messiah will make ready the way, removing the obstacles which might hinder His remnant’s deliverance and return at the Second Advent (cf. Isa 11:15, 16; 52:12).

#1153 Micah 1 Concerning Samaria and Jerusalem

The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

The Coming Destruction

2 Hear, you peoples, all of you;
pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it,
and let the Lord God be a witness against you,
the Lord from his holy temple.
3 For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place,
and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.
4 And the mountains will melt under him,
and the valleys will split open,
like wax before the fire,
like waters poured down a steep place.
5 All this is for the transgression of Jacob
and for the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the transgression of Jacob?
Is it not Samaria?
And what is the high place of Judah?
Is it not Jerusalem?
6 Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the open country,
a place for planting vineyards,
and I will pour down her stones into the valley
and uncover her foundations.
7 All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces,
all her wages shall be burned with fire,
and all her idols I will lay waste,
for from the fee of a prostitute she gathered them,
and to the fee of a prostitute they shall return.

8 For this I will lament and wail;
I will go stripped and naked;
I will make lamentation like the jackals,
and mourning like the ostriches.
9 For her wound is incurable,
and it has come to Judah;
it has reached to the gate of my people,
to Jerusalem.

10 Tell it not in Gath;
weep not at all;
in Beth-le-aphrah
roll yourselves in the dust.
11 Pass on your way,
inhabitants of Shaphir,
in nakedness and shame;
the inhabitants of Zaanan
do not come out;
the lamentation of Beth-ezel
shall take away from you its standing place.
12 For the inhabitants of Maroth
wait anxiously for good,
because disaster has come down from the Lord
to the gate of Jerusalem.
13 Harness the steeds to the chariots,
inhabitants of Lachish;
it was the beginning of sin
to the daughter of Zion,
for in you were found
the transgressions of Israel.
14 Therefore you shall give parting gifts
to Moresheth-gath;
the houses of Achzib shall be a deceitful thing
to the kings of Israel.
15 I will again bring a conqueror to you,
inhabitants of Mareshah;
the glory of Israel
shall come to Adullam.
16 Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair,
for the children of your delight;
make yourselves as bald as the eagle,
for they shall go from you into exile. Micah 1 ESV

Micah 1 Concerning Samaria and Jerusalem

The name of the book is derived from the prophet who, having received the word of the Lord, was commissioned to proclaim it. Micah, whose name is shared by others in the OT (e.g., Judg. 17:1; 2 Chr. 13:2; Jer. 36:11), is a shortened form of Micaiah (or Michaiah) and means “Who is like the LORD?” In 7:18, Micah uses a play on his own name, saying “Who is a God like You?” - GTY

Micah of Moresheth (Mareshah) - This is a town in Judah on the border of Philistia, it is approximately 25 miles S. West of Jerusalem and at times was considered an important fortification to protect the interior. This is primarily a rural area in the foothills.

…7Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,… 2 Chronicles 11: 5-9

Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah - I will put links to passages and studies from that period below, but this timeframe would also make Micah a contemporary of Isaiah and Hosea:

…17Some of the elders of the land stood up and said to the whole assembly of the people, 18“Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and told all the people of Judah that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.’ 19Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great harm on ourselves!”… Jeremiah 26: 17-19

All of you - God's dealings with Israel, His covenant people, teaches the whole world, makes known the Sovereign Creator.

Micah addresses a small people in a strip of land merely about the size of Wales, yet in Micah 1:2 and Micah 6:1,2, he commands the whole earth, the mountains, the hills, to attend (in Scripture usage mountains and hills frequently symbolize kingdoms). This is no mere rhetoric. Micah realized that the covenant people were brought into their unique relationship with Jehovah so that through them the sovereignty of the true God, in its governmental administration among the nations, might be objectified to all peoples and for all time. Had Israel remained faithful she would have displayed the munificence of the Divine government. Alas, Israel exhibits a tragically different yet vastly significant aspect of the Divine government; and well may the nations of today heed it! - Precept Austin

1This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 2Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me.… Isaiah 1: 1-2

Witness against you, the Lord from His holy temple - For some deist, the idea of God is very impersonal, that He made and then left or looks in on occasion, but the God of the Bible sees everything and is consistently involved with His creation. He is so much a part of History, that the weight of it is held up by His hand. That His temple is the place of His throne is also telling, He is on the ultimate seat of rule, the true Sovereign over all.

…3If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” 4The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His heavenly throne. His eyes are watching closely; they examine the sons of men. 5The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked; His soul hates the lover of violence.… Psalm 11: 3-5

Matthew Henry - Let the Lord God be witness against you, a witness that you had fair warning given you, that your prophets did their duty faithfully as watchmen, but you would not take the warning let the accomplishment of the prophecy be a witness against your contempt and disbelief of it, and prove, to your conviction and confusion, that it was the word of God, and no word of his shall fall to the ground." Note, God himself will be a witness, by the judgments of his hand, against those that would not receive his testimony in the judgments of his mouth. (Commentary)

He will come down and tread the high places of the earth - Mountains are often used in Scripture of the seat of power, of governments, but there were also high places where people went to worship idols. Those that govern poorly and those that worship falsely will be brought under His judgment. Remember in verse 1 that this is the word "concerning Samaria and Jerusalem", both cities which are on a mount. It was a good building strategy in those times, to have the high ground, gravity on your side, for with the technology of the day it was much for your enemy to overcome. God will not come up but down even upon these high places.

…12“Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel! 13For behold, He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind and reveals His thoughts to man, who turns the dawn to darkness and strides on the heights of the earth— the LORD, the God of Hosts, is His name.” Amos 4: 12-13

14And it will be said, “Build it up, build it up, prepare the way, take every obstacle out of the way of My people.” 15For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and humble in spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite. 16For I will not accuse you forever, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.… Isaiah 57: 14-16

High Place (01116) (bamah) can refer to a literal (physical) height (high place) such as a mountain or a high place used for worship. Samuel offered acceptable worship to God in the high place (1Sa 9:13). However most OT uses (see first three uses by Moses = Lev 26:30; Nu 22:41; 33:52) refer to places of abominable idol worship or syncretistic worship (~"God plus gods" which is really NOT worship of the One True, Living God!) Habakkuk used bamah in his last words in which he gave powerful declaration of his renewed faith "The Lord GOD is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments." (Hab 3:19) (May his tribe increase! Amen) - Precept Austin

What is the transgression of Jacob, is it not Samaria - Here Jacob is used for representation of the 10 northern tribes of Israel. Samaria is the capital, an apostate kingdom which put off the worship of the true God by the means and in the places which He ordained, for the worship of calves instead. It was a pragmatic decision by a leader, Jeroboam I, who did not want to lose control over the people of the northern kingdom. He fashioned idols and allowed anyone who wanted to be a priest to buy into the priesthood, a position of power and influence.

And what is the high place of Judah, is it not Jerusalem - Now this is the southern kingdom, Jerusalem being the capitol and the place where God ordained the temple, the true worship, His Levitical priests, and it is the city of David. This is the place of Mt. Moriah, where Abraham brought Isaac, who God replaced with a ram, it is the place of God's own sacrificial Lamb, His Son, Jesus Christ. Though God has chosen this place out of all the cities on the planet, yet this does not preclude His judgment when Jerusalem is found in sin. When she brings in idolatries, as vividly described in Ezekiel 8, God must certainly grind them out and bring down every high place.

…13Again, He told me, “You will see them committing even greater abominations.” 14Then He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and I saw women sitting there, weeping for Tammuz. 15“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Yet you will see even greater abominations than these.”… Ezekiel 8: 13-15

1This is what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away. 2Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer when I called? Is My hand too short to redeem you? Or do I lack the strength to deliver you? Behold, My rebuke dries up the sea; I turn the rivers into a desert; the fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst. 3I clothe the heavens in black and make sackcloth their covering.”… Isaiah 50: 1-2

…13He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. But Zedekiah stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel. 14Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
15Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had compassion on them and on His dwelling place. 16But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words and scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was stirred up beyond remedy.… 2 Chronicles 36: 13-16

From the fee of a prostitute she gathered them - These false places of worship brought in revenue by way of gifts to temple prostitutes. Standing up and preaching the carefully handled word of God is most often not a crowd pleaser, but a brothel will have them lining up. Israel and Judah had also prostituted true worship, one avoiding the temple and the other defiling it.

…4I will have no compassion on her children, because they are the children of adultery. 5For their mother has played the harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and drink.’ 6Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her path with thorns; I will enclose her with a wall, so she cannot find her way.…
…11I will put an end to all her exultation: her feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths—all her appointed feasts. 12I will destroy her vines and fig trees, which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers. So I will make them into a thicket, and the beasts of the field will devour them. 13I will punish her for the days of the Baals when she burned incense to them, when she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers. But Me she forgot,” declares the LORD.… Hosea 2: 4-6 and 11-13

…17No daughter or son of Israel is to be a shrine prostitute. 18You must not bring the wages of a prostitute, whether female or male, into the house of the LORD your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the LORD your God. 19Do not charge your brother interest on money, food, or any other type of loan.… Deuteronomy 23: 17-19

The irony of this passage is that the gold and silver taken from Israel's places of idol worship were used by the Assyrians to make their own idols for worship! As Kaiser says "All too often evil is like a treadmill that keeps on repeating itself apart from the dramatic intervention of the Spirit of God." - Precept Austin

I will go stripped and naked - This reminds us of Isaiah's prophecy and visible sign of humiliation relating to Egypt and Cush.

…2the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the sackcloth from your waist and the sandals from your feet.” And Isaiah did so, walking around naked and barefoot. 3Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and omen against Egypt and Cush, 4so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, naked and barefoot, with bared buttocks—to Egypt’s shame.… Isaiah 20: 2-4

For her wound is incurable -

Her wound - Some think this refers to to Samaria's punishment from God. Others think it refers to Samaria's sin which has come to Judah much like gangrene which spreads in the human body and kills unless it is cut out. The NET translation has "It has infected Judah; it has spread to the leadership of my people and has even contaminated Jerusalem!" - Precept Austin

…5Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling? Your head has a massive wound, and your whole heart is afflicted. 6From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and festering sores neither cleansed nor bandaged nor soothed with oil. 7Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire. Foreigners devour your fields before you—a desolation demolished by strangers.… Isaiah 1: 5-7

10-15 Tell it not in Gath - This harps back to a Song of David, and verses 10-15 list 11 cities in that region.

…19“Your glory, O Israel, lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen! 20Tell it not in Gath; proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, and the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21O mountains of Gilboa, may you have no dew or rain, no fields yielding offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.… 2 Samuel 1: 19-21

Micah 1: 10-15 lists 11 cities, indicating the scope of the human shame and the divine sentence. Many of the names of the cities represent word plays in that they sound like (or have a related meaning to) what they symbolize.

Stewart Briscoe (Hearing God’s Voice Above The Noise) says that it would be like an American preacher on prime time TV saying, "Living in Pittsburg is the pits.... Los Angeles is no city of angels. Wisconsin should only be pronounced Wiscon-SIN." That would sort of get attention, don’t you think? (Ed: This was Micah's methodology at least in part.)

Here is John Phillips' summary of Micah's word plays on the names of the towns to be destroyed...
Gath: "Tell it not in Tell-town."
Aphrah: "Roll in dust at Dust-town."
Saphir: "beauty shamed at Beauty-town"
Zaanan: "no going out from Out-town"
Beth-ezel: "no neighborliness at Neighbor-town"
Maroth: "bitter tears at Bitter-town"
Jerusalem: "no peace at Peace-town"
Lachish: "horsepower gone from Horse-town"
Achzib: "Falsehood reigns at False-town."
Mareshah: "no possessions left at Possession-town"
Adullam: "no testimony in Testimony-town" - Precept Austin

Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair - This was typically forbidden under the direction of the Law in Leviticus 21:5 because of pagan practices relating to death, and possibly because of other pagan superstitions that saw this hair as an encumbrance to receiving divine knowledge, so the so called "priests, sages, witch doctors" would enlarge the area of the forehead by shaving it back.

…19when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” 20Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”… Job 1: 19-21

For they shall go from you into exile - This is mourning what will come of Israel's youth in the future. Babylon took their best and brightest, the book of Daniel is a good account of that time.
