#17 "Wife of Cain" Genesis 5

Then Cain went away from the prescence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. his brother's name was jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy sevenfold."

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, "Gos has appointed for me another offspring instead of abel, for Cain killed him." To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

So who was Cain's wife? Well, that is not so complicated as you might think. It is simple. Cain married his sister, for Eve was the mother of all living. This would be considered bad practice today and rightly so, but at this time it is where all people started. The almost perect man and woman with a clean and large genetic pool are perfectly designed to start the human population. Even after the fall our parents would still be amazing physical specimens. This does not go against what is scientifically observable to us today in the form of entropy. People, animals and plants all lose information along the way, and though we would like to see it the other way around, entropy is what we actually observe. If you take a group of animals and cut them off from outside genetics you will find that each generation becomes weaker than the last. There are thousands of examples of this, some caused by man's cities, roads and fences and others by overhunting and or inbreeding to lock in certain traits. 

After he begot Seth, the days of adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. Genesis 5:4

The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover. Leviticus 18:9

Since I am going through God's Word right now, I am going to take a pass on any jokes about certain areas of the country, I think that would be a wrong turn. It is however as we see from chapter 18 of Leviticus forbidden. That chapter covers a lot of the typical conditions of incest.

Lamech's claim of 77fold vengeance from God on one who hurts him seems to be from his own arrogance and possibly because the act was in self defense. I can't tell for certain if he is trying to reassure his wives, seek their ok, and therefore reassure himself, but it is the second recorded killing. He is also the first noted bigamist.

Adam has another Son, Seth, which may seem uninteresting in itself because lots of people have children, but this will be part of the lineage of David and on to Jesus Christ.
