44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.

45 So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

46 Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

48 For the Lord had spoken unto Moses, saying,

49 Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:

50 But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.

53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.

54 And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did they. Numbers 1: 20-54 KJV

It is a rather large group of people to wander together and yet be sustained. I am sure many a scholar has raised a brow at this, even in times past, but it is by no other provision than that of God, that this people is sustained. The One Who would later come in His name, with humanity cloaked over His glory, in such a way that we could not so recognize "I am", He would in like fashion, as His Father, feed the 5000. Still we don't make the connection, and still we are turned off by the message. I live in a time where people believe in far more extravagant miracles than Design, a Creator, but we are so easily offended at the notion of a Holy God, who sets apart the Levites here, as the guardians of the sacred. 

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. #287 Counting the Cost

And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;

3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers.

5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur.

8 Of Issachar; Nethaneel the son of Zuar.

If I wrote this story myself, I think it too extravagant a turn. Abraham was promised to be the father of nations, but these people have not had a path paved without obstruction. They have come from captivity, servants, not soldiers, and yet they are now being numbered for war. One can see the fruit of God's promise by shear numbers, but outside His sovereignty and the acts of His hand it would appear beyond improbable. They have made it thus far and now they are numbered and the genealogies recorded.
 

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

3 And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9 And the Lord spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

11 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee

12 Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

14 So the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men. 1Chronicles 21:1-14

Whose people did you number? Who did they belong to? How do you exist and how is it, oh David, that you are king? God did not call for this count and some speculate that David was wanting to number the people for tribute, increasing his coffers, or for campaign of war that God had not advised. Seeing that his servant Joab is distressed with the decree and advises against it, reveals that there is at the very least, wrong motive. Whenever we sin though, there is at the root, pride, and the outcome of this is breaking. If we can choose humility or beg for mercy, then I would suggest that the inability to do so should lead one to beg for the wisdom to see the folly. We pound our chest and count what we didn't even make, holding back from God sucking up the honor that leads to utter destruction, emptiness. God has preserved us and all those who have believed throughout time. Do we even know what to count?

#286 Summation of Leviticus

I recognized one thing in Leviticus, both as a young man and now, and that is a sense of a culture foreign to my own. It is alien and so far from me to even begin or want to understand. My reaction today is much different than in so many years past. I want to know God for Who He is and understand the Author's intent in all of scripture. Yes, it is often contrary to my feelings, but I have come to confess God as the Creator and Author of life, and I did not make myself nor the things that I observe. The image of God has put a value on those that I share this planet with, and in Leviticus I find a holiness that leaves me standing at the precipice of eternity, staring out across an endless void. How will I treat those standing next to me? Will their maker allow for them to be degraded by me, reduced to their flesh, their labor, or even our differences?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20New International Version (NIV)

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

God doesn't need my endorsement. He is not waiting for me to decide whether He is God, Holy and Worthy. He has reached out from all of eternity in an act of love underserved and not repayable, yet it should and will be known in those who have received such grace as a change. It will be seen in the lives of those who worship in spirit and truth. The truth is not dependent upon my feelings, and it is not a lack of empathy on my part as we begin to disagree and drift away to our separate and dividing ideals. I do not love you any less, but I love God all the more, and I must come to understand these things through the grace provided. Leviticus has become a point of much contention, but alas I am still not God, and all this will pass away, but His word will remain. I haven't the position or the pull to change it to your or my liking. He is holy and therefore alien to me.

18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book (Revelation 22:18-19).

#285 Oaths

11 And if it be any unclean beast, of which they do not offer a sacrifice unto the Lord, then he shall present the beast before the priest:

12 And the priest shall value it, whether it be good or bad: as thou valuest it, who art the priest, so shall it be.

13 But if he will at all redeem it, then he shall add a fifth part thereof unto thy estimation.

14 And when a man shall sanctify his house to be holy unto the Lord, then the priest shall estimate it, whether it be good or bad: as the priest shall estimate it, so shall it stand.

15 And if he that sanctified it will redeem his house, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be his.

16 And if a man shall sanctify unto the Lord some part of a field of his possession, then thy estimation shall be according to the seed thereof: an homer of barley seed shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver.

17 If he sanctify his field from the year of jubile, according to thy estimation it shall stand.

18 But if he sanctify his field after the jubile, then the priest shall reckon unto him the money according to the years that remain, even unto the year of the jubile, and it shall be abated from thy estimation.

19 And if he that sanctified the field will in any wise redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be assured to him.

20 And if he will not redeem the field, or if he have sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed any more.

21 But the field, when it goeth out in the jubile, shall be holy unto the Lord, as a field devoted; the possession thereof shall be the priest's.

22 And if a man sanctify unto the Lord a field which he hath bought, which is not of the fields of his possession;

23 Then the priest shall reckon unto him the worth of thy estimation, even unto the year of the jubile: and he shall give thine estimation in that day, as a holy thing unto the Lord.

24 In the year of the jubile the field shall return unto him of whom it was bought, even to him to whom the possession of the land did belong.

25 And all thy estimations shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary: twenty gerahs shall be the shekel.

26 Only the firstling of the beasts, which should be the Lord's firstling, no man shall sanctify it; whether it be ox, or sheep: it is the Lord's.

27 And if it be of an unclean beast, then he shall redeem it according to thine estimation, and shall add a fifth part of it thereto: or if it be not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to thy estimation.

28 Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the Lord of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the Lord.

29 None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death.

30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.

33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.

A vow is a serious thing, and to say, "I promise to ..." do anything is never a light matter with the Lord. There is a great deal of instruction to the depraved here. For instance, substitutions of lesser come with the penalty of both the substitution and the more desirable offering now being both set apart. You lose the mansion you first promised and now the shack you would substitute. Don't promise lightly. Don't make an oath. I have embarrassed myself before in this, arrogance, foolishness on my part, and the devaluing of my words by my own choices and lack of resolve. This addresses property under lean of an oath as well. If you sold it to another while it was promised to god, then at the year of Jubilee when it would normally return to your possession, it would instead be given to the priest. We think we have loop holes and politicians are given to making promises, salesmen to saying whatever it takes to close the deal. I deal a lot with contractors who have promised a finished product but always try to deliver less. I often deal with men who despise facts when it paints a picture contrary to what they are selling. Ah, but I read here that the unclean can be redeemed, and a good thing. Be honest, everything already belongs to God, and so come humbly asking for His will and guidance in all matters. Remember Ananias and Saphira:

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. Acts 5: 1-11

#284 Dedication

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the Lord by thy estimation.

3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.

4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels.

5 And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

6 And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver.

7 And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

8 But if he be poorer than thy estimation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to his ability that vowed shall the priest value him.

9 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the Lord, all that any man giveth of such unto the Lord shall be holy.

10 He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then it and the exchange thereof shall be holy. Leviticus 27:1-10 KJV

The promise of service or dedication of oneself to ministry is not a new idea, nor the exclusive invention of monks and nuns. People made such vows even in Moses' time but here the Lord steps in to provide such means as to be released from such a vow. The prices are in accordance with the ability of the person to perform the work, but a poor man or woman could be released in accordance to what they had. It is not wrong to leave the service of the church, a person may wish to redeem his wife from such a service so they could move elsewhere, or one may have with age, lost the strength. 

There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite[a] from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portionbecause he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”

9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[b] saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his[d]word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e] an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there. 1Sam 1:1-28

25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

26 And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.

27 And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;

28 Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.

29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

30 And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.

31 And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.

32 And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.

33 And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.

34 Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.

35 As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.

36 And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.

37 And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

38 And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

40 If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;

41 And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:

It was a long road for me to accept that God only owes what He has promised. Sin leads to death, that is promised, but He has made this covenant with some and extended life to all who will believe in His Son. There is prophetic utterance in this chapter, but it is in every instance of separation from God, even in time of prosperity that someone will suffer. 

8And the king said to her, "What is the matter with you?" And she answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.' 29"So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, 'Give your son, that we may eat him'; but she has hidden her son." 30When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes-- now he was passing by on the wall-- and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath on his body.…2Kings 6:28-30

For the women above, it was a time of famine, and they killed for food. They became cannibals to survive. For the people of my day, they kill for love of pleasure, in time of "want" and in time of plenty.  They decide who lives because they think there is nothing higher than themselves, passions, feelings. We kill for convenience, but we are bothered by the actions of the God of the Bible, the Author of life.

Clear Water

Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God.

I think it easy enough for most to see that slavery is not an ideal position. It is usually entered in to by way of hard times, kidnapping (which was by Jewish law punishable by death), or forsaking God. It is at it's best volatile, uncertain, and let me give you an example. Right now I love my boss; he is fair, honest and wants to share in the work. He is concerned with my well being and the amount of load I take upon myself. I have signed a contract as a salaried employee to the company overall though, not to an individual, so while I may have a boss that sees me now and recognizes me for my work, tomorrow one of us could be asked to go elsewhere. It is uncertain at best and I have seen my highs and lows here, but while men can change, kingdoms rise and fall, God is eternal. He is this in Justice, Love and Truth. 

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

God does not change, nor does His expectation. When I was young the idea of believing in and obeying God seemed to me a form of slavery. I saw myself as my own person, and yet I hadn't created myself, the Universe, hung the earth at just the right distance from the sun, or even tried to understand anything that would question my want. I put up idols, just like the people here were warned not to. I believed in mankind, the humanist profession of faith. The ideas of there being right and wrong, and of God deciding such, went against my every impulse. No right or wrong, unless you say I'm wrong, unless you take something from me, unless you say there is right and wrong, unless you do something that I find offensive. So here we go into this delusion, and here the humanist will gladly step in and take the seat of power, and separation from God always finds your enemies waiting at the door. Since we have lost our minds and reason though, and believe in ourselves rather than the words of the Creator of the universe, we invite the enemy in. Instead of being covered by the blood of the lamb we drink the Koolaid of human pride, and then wonder about a God who is set against such arrogance. How dare He reclaim what is rightfully His and do what He has promised He would do.

#281 Systematic Slaves

39 And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:

40 But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile.

41 And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.

42 For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.

43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.

44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.

45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.

I hope you took the time to read both of the above links; they were eye opening to me. When I wanted to disprove the significance of the Bible for myself, Leviticus seemed a place to turn to. Slavery seemed  to be a system without reproach, in all of God's word, and why is that? Why didn't Jesus come out strongly against this institution? Was civilization, in my time, not more advanced and evolved? I mean, no one I know owns slaves, and it is illegal in this country. 

Many slaves back then were servants of an occupying power; they were kept alive after war and became free labor for their captors. Some, as we see here, were fallen on hard times and sold themselves into bond in order to pay off debt or survive. They were also turned loose from their service in the year of jubilee, no matter how long they had served prior to that year. 

It was a system, and some chose to stay slaves after their service was up, but why? Well, in Roman times slaves often held positions of respect, friendship with their masters and lived in the same dwelling. They were like contract, salaried employees, but shared the same roof, food, clothing and some money above that. Their families were taken care of for as long as they lived with the land owner and they supervised the day laborers. The day laborer was paid by the day he worked, and if there was no work then there was no pay. He had less security, but he was a free man. The problem with this system, as so many others, is that it relies on someone of a higher position doing what's right regarding those subject to him. I always prefer the system that looks well upon the rights of individuals, rather than trusting in the "inherent goodness" of my fellow man. Slavery, communism and socialism do not take enough into account the depravity of men. "Trust me or trust us, we have your best interest at heart. I am or we are the answer, just sign over your freedoms." They will attack a constitutional government and it's constitution, because a constitution recognizes that the majority can also be wrong. There is in the end no perfect system here, and a change of heart, humility, the love of God and wisdom are greater than any political promise.

Do not let it concern you, but if you can gain your freedom, take the opportunity. 22For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman. Conversely, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. 23You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men 1 Corinthians 7:21-23

It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.

13 “‘In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to their own property.

14 “‘If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other. 15 You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. 16 When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. 17 Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. 18 “‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. 19 Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. 20 You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” 21 I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. 22 While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.

23 “‘The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. 24 Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemptionof the land.

25 “‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold. 26 If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves,27 they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. 28 But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property.

29 “‘Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer’s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31 But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.

32 “‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess. 33 So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. 34 But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.

35 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. 37 You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God. Jubilee, comes from a word signifying a horn or a trumpet, and with that sound the song of atonement, redemption. Debts were cancelled, slaves were set free, the earth was at rest from the plow. Everyone who had leased their land could now return to it, the original inheritors, and why, because it did not belong even to them. 

3"Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me! 4"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it?…Job 38:3-5

It belonged to the Creator, just as life itself, and so the outline reflects the greed of man, his inherent depravity. "Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God." Five years till Jubilee would be measure as five years growing seasons. It was the use of the land they bargained, but the rite of it and the inhabitation always reverted back to the original owner in the year of Jubilee. If a man must barter it because he had fallen on hard times then he should not be taken advantage of, but he should have the option of redemption. His nearest of kin was obliged to redeem him. Within the walls of a city a house could be sold permanently, and this is probably to help the foreigner and anyone buying a place of residence. 

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:25-28

#279 Fallow

The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. 5 Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest. 6 Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten. Leviticus 25: 1-7 NIV

This was a year when men did not sew nor did they reap. What came up from the ground was not harvested, but rather eaten from hand to mouth. The poor were not restrained from the field or the fruit of the tree. Naturally this allows for nature to recoup, for her to receive the decaying fruit and the fall of leaves. It allows for the beasts to free range and return what they have digested, back to the ground. The weeds, the clover and the alfalfa can grow and then be tilled under on the returning year. We bypass these old practices of alternating fields and letting the land lay fallow for the more "modern" practice of over fertilization. We destroy massive bodies of water with our run off and take no thought of stewardship. Red tide, brown tide, sludge, dead fish and grasses, and we can't seem to turn it off. 

3 Mary therefore took a pound[a] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[b] and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[c] for the day of my burial. Men are quick to judge even what does not belong to them, what they have not made nor earned.
