7 What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but the chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened; 8 just as it is written,

And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 Let their eyes be darkened to see not,

V. 21-22 One of you will betray Me - This is an important section for the disciples. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas was not a surprise to their Master. In fact, it was foretold in Holy Scripture. Let not the disciple think that they were but a stone's throw from entering the Kingdom, but then came along this one Judas who single handedly foiled God's plan. Their whole world is going to become a rather anxious place where fear will cancel everything their ears have heard over the last 3 years. Instead of sleeping in the bottom of the boat He will be lying in the grave, and they will be alone without their shepherd to turn to on the darkest days of their lives. It is important that they understand this, that this is the will of God, that God is not the author of evil, but He is sovereign over evil men. Like Joseph said to his brothers, "what you intended for evil, God intended for good." Some will say they do not see any element of the doctrine of double predestination within this passage, but I find it unavoidable, for God's sovereignty is above every matter. For me it is a matter of positive in the sense of the election of the saints, that God chose them as a matter of His good pleasure in grace to salvation, and in the case of Judas, a negative, that God did not choose him for salvation, yet chose to allow him to live, and override Judas' own evil choices unto God's good purpose. There are hyper-Calvinists who would see both as a positive action from God, but this would contradict the understanding that we distill from taking the whole counsel, yes, God makes even the wicked for the day of evil, but does he cause men to sin? Not according to His word.

12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. 13When tempted, no one should say, “ God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. 14But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed.… James 1: 12-14
Vs. 23-25 Who is it - Peter ask the Apostle John to ask Jesus. It is remarkable to me how close a family they have become. They are daily breaking bread together, walking together, being taught by God, and it is as though, but unbeknownst yet to them, that they have had an experience similar to that of our first parents, who also walked with God in the garden.
V. 26 For whom I shall dip the piece of bread - This is a huge clue, not only because he will give this piece of bread to Judas, but because the prophecy. Did they ponder that? I don't know, certainly later, but I don't know what John thought at the time. Jesus is letting them know that He knows though, and that is important. He knows, He knows everything, all the things I ever feel anxiety about, everything, He knows.
…8“A vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!” 9Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. 10But You, O LORD, be gracious to me and raise me up, that I may repay them.… Psalm 41: 8-10
…12Then I told them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed out my wages, thirty pieces of silver. 13And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”— this magnificent price at which they valued me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD. Zechariah 11: 12-13
Vs. 27-30 Satan then entered into him - Christ, as God, could not be tempted, though Satan tried to tempt Him according to the flesh, yet he found nothing to latch onto in Jesus. 40 days without food could not break Him, but Judas is a different story. There were many handles in his heart, many an unlocked door, for he loved the idea of ruling in a kingdom, loved the finer things in life as he was quick to value the perfume, and he also stole from the company purse. When was the moment that Judas finalized his decision, separated himself from the others? Outwardly he was still walking with them, eating with them, and no one but Jesus recognized him.
…29And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe. 30I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me. 31But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up! Let us go on from here.… John 14: 29-31
What you do, do quickly - Even possessed by Satan, the two still have to come under God's ordained purpose. Judas was not filled with the Spirit of God but a heart that longed for the things the devil promises.
…2With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? 4Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”… Acts 5: 2-4
43When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean, and put in order. 45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there; and the final plight of that man is worse than the first. That Jesus was saying to him, "Buy (agorazo) the things we have need (chreia) of for the feast (heorte)" or else, that he should give something to the poor (ptochos) - The disciples were a bit "slow," for Jesus had made a very clear prophecy declaring "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me." They simply did not understand, either because they it was hidden from them or they were really that naive. The text is not clear as to which is the case. What is surprising is that even though Jesus had told John who the betrayer was, he apparently still did not believe it was Judas. And this makes sense, because if the disciples had truly known it was Judas, they would have tried to stop him. Jesus however was clearly in full control and would assure the prophetic passages were fulfilled. Judas giving money to the poor is a major stretch, but that is how much they trusted him and how effective was his charade! - Precept Austin
Vs. 31-32 Now is the Son of Man glorified - He comes as the life, a baby born in a manger, fulfilling the life of a spotless One, like the lamb without spot in the Jewish sacrifices, the Passover. Now the Father considers Him, examines Him, and He is fit to the task of being glorified, lifted up in my place. This is what the baby was born to do. He is heading to the cross.
49I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! 51Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division.… Luke 12: 49-51

Vs. 33-35 A little longer - His first mission had almost come to an end, and He would be leaving them to return to the right hand of the Father.
Love one another even as I have loved you - How did Jesus love? Rather extravagantly, I mean God washed their stinky feet, and now He is going to the cross for them. It is a selfless sort of love, giving and forgiving. He is asking them to not say it so much as to live it by laying aside their lives, wanting the good of others above ones own comfort, even one's life. He applies a similar message to husbands regarding their wives. Their is nothing complex in these commands, nothing that requires genius, they are only difficult or hard in that they are not natural to us. We don't want to do them in our falleness, so we must be made alive to walk in them. It is not a cross on one's neck, a tattoo of Calvary, or a t-shirt that says Jesus loves U which indicts us, but rather how we act toward each other. If we can't stand the body of Christ then we don't know Him.
…24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her 26to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,… Ephesians 5: 24-26
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4: 7-11
Vs. 36-38 Will you lay down your life for Me - Peter's verbal declarations are checks without a checking account. Jesus lets him know here that he will actually deny Him. Again, these are important things for the disciples who are about to undergo a most terrifying separation from the One Who has brought them through storms, clashes with the spiritual world, fed thousands, healed untold multitudes. So many are well meaning in how they speak, and I have had people call me, "brother", and tell me, "I got your back, I will ride into hell with you, fight the whole bar." And well, sometimes they were the one that stabbed me in the back, I will give them the hell part because that's the direction we were travelling in, but sometimes their mouth started the fight in the bar, but as it turns out they could run really fast and left me behind. Words come easy, and I think Peter was down for a bar fight, but not the crucifixion, not yet. God has to work that in us, otherwise we will run to self preservation, and our words will fall to not. At the end of the day though, I would rather be Peter than Judas.
