#1359 Luke 4 Part 3 The Good News

31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. Luke 4: 31-44

He was teaching them on the Sabbath - This was a very important part of Jesus' ministry. Once we realize that the Bible is the word of the living God, and that His intent and purpose are therein, we then realize the significance of proper teaching. Jesus taught crowds but also took disciples who basically went to a three year seminary with Him before he loosed them on the world. Teaching is so important and a big part of His teaching separated God's truth from the error being taught by the scribes of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Many people will take a podium, a soap box, a pulpit or a stage when made available to them, but neither these places nor the crowds make what you say true, it has to be true before you say it, and the Son of God is bringing the truth, but truth can also be offensive to those who don't want to hear it.

…15What then has become of your blessing? For I can testify that, if it were possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.… Galatians 4: 15-17

And they were astonished at His teaching - It is still today a blessing when someone teaches the Word with sound doctrine and a love for the Savior it points to. I remember years ago wanting to take my children to hear R.C. Sproul, who is not on the level of Jesus, but is a faithful servant of the Master, and I wanted to go so they could hear a reformer who was passionate about teaching. He loved God and therefore loved the word of God and truly had the gift of teaching. It was sad because he was on an oxygen tank at that time and someone else preached, but I was still convicted. R.C. has passed on into eternity now, but if you ever have the chance you can still watch his lecture on Isaiah 6, the holiness of God, and it is marvelous.

1Of David. I give You thanks with all my heart; before the gods I sing Your praises. 2I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your name for Your loving devotion and Your faithfulness; You have exalted Your name and Your word above all else. 3On the day I called, You answered me; You emboldened me and strengthened my soul.… Psalm 138: 1-3

I know Who You are, the Holy One of God - The demons know Who Christ is, that He is the Son of God, and they tremble before their Maker, but this does not save them. Jesus is not wanting to take the throne of David at this point; He has come now to be the Passover Lamb, and so He tells the demon to be quiet.

He commands the unclean spirits and they come out - The devil and his associates were at one time heavenly angels, spiritual beings created by God the Father through God the Son to worship God in Spirit and truth, but they fell into pride. Even the devil has to ask permission when he goes after one of God's people, as we see in the book of Job. The One to fear is God alone. Jesus' miracles reveal Who He is. He teaches with authority, but He is also over the spiritual realm as well.

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” The manner of Jesus’ dealings with the demon in this passage is a clear demonstration of His power and authority over the spirit realm. People were amazed at the authority of His word in both teaching and in spiritual living.

i. “This may have distinguished Jesus from the ‘ordinary’ exorcist’s fanfare of incantations, charms, and superstitions.” (Pate) - E Word

…4“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. 5But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 6“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.”… Job 2: 4-6

17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.” 18So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.… Luke 10: 17-19

Simon's mother in law - Usually you have a mother in law when you are married.

Rebuked the fever and it left her - Jesus power over sickness.

For I was sent for this purpose - What? To tell the good news, the gospel, that fallen man has a way to be right with God, that sinners can have hope in Jesus Christ. The world was already under the condemnation of sin, but here is the cure.

15that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.… John 3: 15-17
