#1121 Ezekiel 1 Part 3 Likeness From The Midst

4 As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal. 5 And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, 6 but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot. And they sparkled like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: 9 their wings touched one another. Each one of them went straight forward, without turning as they went. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had a human face. The four had the face of a lion on the right side, the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and the four had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. And their wings were spread out above. Each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while two covered their bodies. 12 And each went straight forward. Wherever the spirit would go, they went, without turning as they went. 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14 And the living creatures darted to and fro, like the appearance of a flash of lightning. Ezekiel 1: 4-14

Ezekiel 1: 5A

"Now that the church is to be planted for a long time in another country, the Lord shows a glory in the midst of them, as he had done at their first constituting into a church in the wilderness; and out of a cloud and fire, as he had done there, he showed himself; and from between living creatures, as from between the cherubim, he gives his oracles." This put an honour upon them, by which they might value themselves when the Chaldeans insulted over them, and this might encourage their hopes of deliverance in due time. - Dr. Lightfoot BLB M. H.

…2and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory. 3The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when He came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the River Kebar. I fell facedown, 4and the glory of the LORD entered the temple through the gate facing east.… Ezekiel 43: 2-4

Now we start to see what was in the midst of the fire; it takes form. It is important here to understand some simple truths taught in Scripture:

1. We are being invited here to look upon an account of a man who was given access to God's throne room in heaven, by a heavenly vision. Great care must be taken that we do not impose things upon this text that are without Scriptural merit. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him, worship Him in Spirit and in truth.

…11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit.… 1 John 4: 11-13

2. Angels are created spirit beings, and so the images that we read about are God's way of manifesting these things invisible to our visible perception. They are not to be worshiped, but should ever elevate our idea of God's glory, for He made them, and they seek to do His will.

…7“Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.” 8And I am John, who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. 9But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”… Revelation 22: 7-9

3. These are cherubim, and there are a host of angels, very many, but these four living creatures the author later identifies as cherubim. Seraphim would be the "burning ones", and these cherubim are those attendants to Deity, but all serve God, those holy, elect angels, willingly, and those fallen, as under His sovereignty.

…19As I watched, the cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, with the glory of the God of Israel above them. 20These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the River Kebar, and I knew that they were cherubim. 21Each had four faces and four wings, with what looked like human hands under their wings.… Ezekiel 10: 19-21

10You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign upon the earth.” 11Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels and living creatures and elders encircling the throne, and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands. 12In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and Inand blessing!”… Revelation 5: 10-12

4. The revelation of these cherubim to humans is given with different aspects II different authors, and I believe this to be important each time as to what we are to ascertain, and what the angels are doing. We can go as far back as Genesis to see how they are revealed there and in what office.

…23Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3: 23-24

In the artistry of the tabernacle and temple they are carved even on the the ark of the covenant, the mercy seat (lid) where God's glory settles when He meets with His people. The temple and tabernacle were shadows or reflections of the heavenly throne, veiled to a fallen humanity, only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies. The cherubim are represented there in carvings, also upon the walls of the temple, facing God, for this their great honor of service, to wait upon and worship their Creator.

…18Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat, 19 one cherub on one end and one on the other, all made from one piece of gold. 20And the cherubim are to have wings that spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the mercy seat.… Exodus 25: 18-20

And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures - From the midst of the fire discussed in verse 4.

I think this is as far as I will go today and leave off with John's heavenly encounter from Revelation so that you can read and see the contrasts. We will continue to draw upon these, Isaiah and Daniel.

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings[a] and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.

And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is to come!”

9 And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.” Revelation 4: 1-11
