#1435 Luke 22 Part 1 Drew Near

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. Luke 22: 1-6 ESV

Luke 22: 1-6 Passover Week

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover - The Bible is not just words because it is full of word pictures as well, and there is hardly a better picture of the gospel message than that which is supplied by the Passover. Where leaven represents sin and the people are told to repent of sin, then there needs to be a bread without leaven to consume, the Bread of Life. A life for a life, an unleavened or sinless life to be given in the place of  my sinful life. During the first Passover, each family took a lamb without spot, clean, and they killed this lamb and placed the blood of it upon the doorpost of their houses. Wherever the blood marked the door the people inside were safe like those inside the ark during the flood of Noah's time. It is called Passover because the angel of Death went and killed the firstborn in every house of Egypt that was not marked by the blood. Jesus and the Apostles make it abundantly clear.

…18For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.… Luke 22: 18-20

…34“Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.” 35 Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. 36But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.… John 6: 34-36

…6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven works through the whole batch of dough? 7Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old bread, leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and of truth.… 1 Corinthians 5: 6-8

For they feared the people - The priests and scribes had beef with Jesus because He didn't recognize them as the spiritual leaders they thought themselves to be. They had the titles, but they ignored God's laws for their traditions. These men ran all sorts of money making schemes on the temple mount and Jesus came in and flipped their tables. He was a thorn in their sides, and they wanted to kill Him, but they feared the people because He had performed many miracles in front of them. Remember, when Jesus came riding in on the donkey they gave Him a Messiah's welcome.

…8A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!” 10When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”… Matthew 21: 8-10

12Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves. 13And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” 14The blind and the lame came to Him at the temple, and He healed them.… Matthew 21: 12-14

Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot - The Chief Priests have been looking for an opportunity to take Jesus out, and one is being provided for them. So why didn't Satan do this earlier? Well, Satan tried to kill Jesus when He was born, but as MacArthur rightly points out, "the devil is God's devil", he does nothing outside the parameters that God has made for him. Even when the devil wanted to go after Job he had to ask God for permission. Coming out of evangelicalism, the charismatic/Pentecostal movement and finding Reformed Theology, this was both a shock and ultimately a great relief, to find that the God of the Universe, the Creator, was sovereign over all. This has been a great encouragement to me through various trials, and the more I look to Christ the less I fear men or devils.

…11But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. Job 1: 11-12

And they were glad and agreed to give him money - Not much even but this was what Judas was about. He wanted the kingdom to start straight away, for Jesus to drive out Rome and then put up Judas as a ruler. He wanted wealth, thinking that was the thing he needed most, yet he will become a tool to the greater need, God's plan for redemption.

…5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6 Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it. 7“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.… John 12: 5-7

In absence of a crowd - The hypocrites didn't need Judas to take Jesus, they could have done that on their own, but they needed him to take Jesus quietly, to know where He resided. They didn't want to draw attention for fear of the crowds, but how fickle a crowd, cheering Him at the beginning of the week, welcoming the Son of David.

26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? Jeremiah 5: 26-29

#1434 Luke 21 Part 7 The Violation Of Dissipation

34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. Luke 21: 34-38 ESV

Luke 21: 34-38 Watch Yourselves

…37As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. 39And they were oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.… Matthew 24: 37-39

MacArthur - Vigilant anticipation (ED: AKA "VERTICAL VISION") of the Lord’s return produces the fear that leads to holiness and virtue in believers, since it motivates separation from worldliness and sin. MÄ“pote (so that) introduces a result clause that expresses the expected outcome of vigilantly anticipating the second coming. Those who eagerly watch for the Lord’s return will not have their hearts ... weighted down (See Luke 18-24 MacArthur New Testament Commentary) - Precept Austin

But watch yourselves - Other versions have it as, "Be on guard", be prepared, be anticipating, and I would add in this must be introspection, checking yourself. Am I more concerned with the temporal than that which can't be measured, if so, than I am more foolish than I supposed. When God told Noah of coming judgment, Noah prepared, he built an ark for 120 years, for that long he was preparing and anticipating while everyone mocked him. They saw the ark, they thought they gave good commentary, "where's enough water to float this thing?" They laughed, nothing happened for a long time, so they went back to eating, drinking, feasting, marrying, celebrating as if nothing was going to change, then 120 years after the warning from God, it rained and the stores beneath the earth's crust burst forth. The whole world drowned except for those inside the ark.

Be on guard, (prosecho - command to continually be on guard which necessitates continual dependence on the Holy Spirit to obey) so that (purpose clause) your hearts (kardia) will not be weighted down (bareo) with dissipation (kraipale) and drunkenness (methe) and the worries (merimna) of life - In light of the truth that all that Jesus has predicted will come to pass perfectly, He gives a warning to His disciples, but it is a warning which applies not just to the disciples in the first century but disciples throughout the interval of time as we anticipate His return. Note that the command be on guard does not mean to be on the the lookout for signs, but with the command in Lk 21:36 to keep alert, Jesus' point is that we are to continually be alert. And He explains why this is imperative -- otherwise we will begin to be weighed down with the things that affect those in this world, who are living for this world. Jesus is calling for an "other worldly" mindset. Peter predicted that worldly minded people would scoff at the idea that Jesus is returning writing

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts (CF "DISSIPATION AND DRUNKENNESS"), 4 and saying (NATURALLY THEY WILL SCOFF FOR THEY WANT TO BELIEVE THEY WON'T BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR EVIL LIFESTYLES), “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 (PETER EXPLAINS HOW ILLOGICAL THEIR REASONING IS -- THEY HAVE IGNORED THE DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD BY A GLOBAL FLOOD) For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. (2 Peter 3:3-6+ - Precept Austin
…5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test? 6And I hope you will realize that we have not failed the test. 7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not that we will appear to have stood the test, but that you will do what is right, even if we appear to have failed.… 2 Corinthians 13: 5-7

…39Why should any mortal man complain, in view of his sins? 40Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD. 41Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:… Lamentations 3: 39-41

Lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkeness - Dissipation is defined as the descent into drunkeness and sexual decadence, debauchery. It is also used to describe the squandering of money, energy and resources. We live in a day when industry is taking a back seat to entertainment. Sadly, every gift, every moment of free time, every resource will have to be accounted for. Even before the fall, work was a mandate, the mandate to Adam and Eve was to work and to keep the garden and to be fruitful and multiply. Work was a beautiful exercise of  our gifts and resources to the glory of God reflected in those made in His image. After the fall it became more difficult, grievous at times, but work itself should never be frowned upon, it is a blessing and left over vestige of what was noble in us. Christians, of all people, should be the most industrious. I spent most of my life hating my work, being lazy, thinking that entertainment was the height of living, basically honoring myself, and when that wasn't enough I turned to the bottle, the pipe and then the needle, escapism. Some turn to materialism, mostly manifested in consumerism. Some fantasize and romanticize everything, living in an artificial world, consumed by their looks, consumed with what others think about them, or always trying to be something that they are not. They have either never had or have lost any eternal perspective.

Dissipation (2897)(kraipale) is used to describe excessive wine drinking and the carousing and drunkenness that ensues as well as next days symptoms of hangover including headache, nausea, etc. This word can also to dizziness, staggering, clouded thinking, and similar consequences related to excessive alcohol intake. It describes drunken behavior without moral restraint. BDAG says it is "unbridled indulgence in a drinking party." Vine says it is "the giddiness and headache resulting from excessive wine-bibbing, a drunken nausea." - P A

1Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the fading flower of his glorious splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, the pride of those overcome by wine. 2Behold, the Lord has one who is strong and mighty. Like a hailstorm or destructive tempest, like a driving rain or flooding downpour, he will smash that crown to the ground. 3The majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards will be trampled underfoot.… Isaiah 28: 1-3

…10I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. 12What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?… 1 Corinthians 5: 10-12

V. 34b That day come upon you suddenly like a trap - You don't know when your time will end, but when you die you will face God, and if He comes back before you die, you will face God. This is not a call to live a life that earns you peace before your Creator, for no man can do such works except One. It is a call to examine yourself, see that you are a sinner as the God of all that was ever made claims you to be, and look to the cross of His Son Whose works the Father has found acceptable unto the deliverance of repentant sinners. The fruit of true repentance will always follow in those who truly believe, because the Holy Spirit is alive in them, convicting them and convincing them unto all good works.

…26Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.… Hebrews 9: 26-28

V. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth - There is a lot of talk about races, and maybe the media has confused some of you, but God doesn't look at it that way. There is no good race, none, all came from Adam, all die in Adam. We are all of the same blood, sinners, and all must face the judgment. The only difference is Christ, being born again in Him. Judgment is coming, as certain as death and over all the earth just like in the times of Noah.

…3and seven pairs of every kind of bird of the air, male and female, to preserve their offspring on the face of all the earth. 4For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living thing I have made.” 5And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.… Genesis 7: 3-5

…25Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. 27God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.… Acts 17: 25-27

V. 36 But stay awake at all times - Be alert, be ready. Of Christ's return no one knows the hour or the day, and it is easy to get caught up in routine, the ordinary, and then be devastated at the first sign of trouble. Men stand tall when things go well, and my wife and I were talking about this, that when things are good we often mistakenly think that that has to do with us.

12Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity. 13Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong. 14Do everything in love.… 1 Corinthians 16: 12-14

…4So they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.… 2 Timothy 4: 4-6

…6That is why the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded and sober, so that you can pray. 8Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.… 1 Peter 4: 6-8

…7Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 8Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.… 1 Peter 5: 7-9

V. 36b Praying that you may have strength - Another thing men forget when things go well, and then cannot remember as they are being crushed under the weight of earthly anxieties. This should be a daily ongoing thing, the fact that God extends to us the right, the glory of such intimacy, we should go often and lay our thoughts before Him with the guidance of His word.

Praying (deomai) that you may have strength (katischuo) to escape (ekpheugo) all these things that are about to take place - Praying is present tense calling for continual prayer (and/or an attitude that is ready to pray at all times), which calls for continual depend on the Holy Spirit. Recall the context -- Jesus is speaking of the last days, specifically the "last of the last days," the days that precede the DAY of His true "triumphal entry." Paul warned "that in the last days difficult (hard to bear, troublesome, perilous, violent dangerous, savage) times (kairos) will come." (2Ti 3:1+). The last days will require Spirit energized perseverance in prayer, continually seeking God's face that we might remain sober minded and alert. Continually praying will give spiritual strength so that we may escape all these things that are about to take place. Perseverance in prayer will enable perseverance in persecution, "so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. (1Jn 2:28+)

Paul linked the verb agrupneo and the cognate of deomai (deesis) in his exhortation to the saints at Ephesus in the context of (1) being Spirit filled (Eph 5:18+) and (2) aware of ongoing spiritual warfare and the need to "fight on one's knees!" Imagine the "spiritual warfare" in the last of the last days! Prayer will need to be a priority!

With all prayer and petition (deesis) pray at all times in the Spirit (THE ONLY WAY TO PRAY "IN THE SPIRIT" IS TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT!), and with this in view, be on the alert (agrupneo) with all perseverance and petition (deesis) for all the saints, (Ephesians 6:18+) - Precept Austin

V. 36c To escape all these things that are going to take place - Worldwide Tribulation and the final judgment when Christ returns.

John MacArthur comments "Throughout the New Testament saints are instructed to continue in the faith and warned not to turn back (e.g., Matt. 24:13; John 8:31; Col. 1:21-23; Heb. 3:6, 14; Heb 10:39). Two promises are given to those who faithfully persevere. First, they will escape all these things that are about to take place; that is, the future and eternal judgments associated with Christ’s Second Coming in power and glory (1 Th. 1:10; 1 Th 5:9). The believers of the church age will be raptured before the tribulation begins and thus escape the future judgments (cf. Rev 3:10) (Ed: See this sermon for why MacArthur favors a pre-trib rapture - scroll to middle of page); those alive during the tribulation will be protected from the outpouring of God’s wrath on unbelievers. Second, having escaped divine judgment, they will stand before the Son of Man, receiving acceptance, approval, and welcome from Him. No one can do so in his own strength." (See Luke Commentary) - PA quoting J Mac

#1433 Luke 21 Part 6 Figurative or Literal

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Luke 21: 29-33 ESV

Luke 21: 29-33 Fig

And He told them a parable - An analogy, a story to explain and tie together what He just said, a picture to help make it more clear.

Then - This is not tote but kai and is translated as "and" by ESV and KJV. NAS, NET, et al, translate it as "then" because it implies "a sequence of events within the narrative." (NET Note) It clearly links the teaching of the parable to the preceding description of the end of the age.

He told them - Matthew and Mark both add that He gave them a command (aorist imperative - speaks of urgency) to learn (manthano)

Parable (3850)(parabole from para = beside, near + ballo = throw, cast) is literally a throwing beside or placing of one thing by the side of another. In the NT parabole is "a rhetorical figure of speech, setting one thing beside another to form a comparison or illustration." (Friberg Borrow Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament) - Precept Austin

32Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.…
35Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.… Matthew 24: 32-35

V 29b Look at the fig tree, and all the trees - Here is an analogy to help them understand that time before His return. When the new leaves come on in Spring you know that summer is near, and when they drop in Fall, you know that winter is near. It is that imminent, about to happen, certain. The fig tree is often used throughout the Scriptures, something very familiar to the people in that area.

…9They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins. 10I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as detestable as the thing they loved. 11Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.… Hosea 9: 9-11

12And when I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red, 13and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind. 14The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.… Revelation 6: 12-14

V. 31 So also, when you see these things take place - What things? The things we just discussed in the last post. When you see the abomination of desolation in the temple, when you see the sun darken, the moon not give it's light, since it reflects the light of the sun,  when you see the heavens shaken and the stars falling. When is this, it is after the tribulation of those days, the time of Jacob's trouble, the end of the Great Tribulation. That is the most simple, literal and logical approach to the text.

When you see these things happening - Jesus emphasizes the visual aspect of these cosmic signs of Christ's coming with the verbs "see" (blepo) in verse 30 and "see" (horao) in this verse. The same phrase these things was used in Luke 21:28 when Jesus declared "“when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (~Redeemer) is drawing near.” What things? This would certainly be things what one could perceive and see. Therefore, in context this would most likely include the visible signs preceding His return in Lk 21:25+ and then to the ultimate sign in Lk 21:27+ (cf Mt 24:30+ = "the sign") of the Son in the sky. What a dramatic contrast will be seen when the sun which is darkened will be replaced by the Son Who is descending in radiant, majestic splendor! O glorious day! What will soon follow His return? Logically when the King of kings returns (Rev 19:16-note), He needs a Kingdom over which He can rule as absolute Sovereign. So when one sees His "sign" they can know the Kingdom of God is not far behind!

In the version of the parable in Matthew 24:32-33 it is interesting that Jesus says "recognize that HE is near." This makes sense of course, since the Kingdom is not a Kingdom without the presence of the King. When the King returns, everything changes! John alludes to this in Revelation 11:15+ in a proleptic prophecy writing that "Then (When? see Rev 11:13+) the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” - Precept Austin

V. 31b You know that the Kingdom of God is near - Christ  returned to heaven and is sitting at the right hand of the Father, as it was told, and until when? "Until I make Your enemies a footstool." Christ defeated sin both in His spotless life and in His death on the cross: He paid the wages of His elect. When we see these signs mentioned before, especially that of the Son of Man coming on the clouds, then we know that He is coming reign. This will bring an end to all worldly kingdoms and systems, all the insane hopes of men, the false promises of politics and the lies of every false religion.

…7You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor 8and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.… Hebrews 2: 7-9

V. 32 This generation will not pass away until all has taken place - I have seen where some try to make this the generation that He is speaking to, but that generation did not witness all these things, not even locally. The sun going dark is not a local thing, and though there have been eclipses, like during Christ's death, there has never been anything to this magnitude. That generation did not see the coming of Christ in the clouds to set up His earthly Kingdom. If you approach this literally, like the prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah were fulfilled, by a literal Servant of the Lord, who literally rode in on a donkey and then went to a literal death. If you look at the literal example that the Lord gives of the abomination of desolation, which has a historical picture in Antiochus Epiphanes. If you interpret these things Jesus speaks about in the future under the same light of that which was spoken of Him by the prophets, then there is a literal fulfillment coming with a literal kingdom. There is no indication here or elsewhere of a figurative interpretation, that would rely on extrabiblical, special revelation and not Sola Scriptura.

9Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the bow of war will be broken. Then He will proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion will extend from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.… Zechariah 9: 9-10

This perfectly answers, finally, the question that started this whole discussion. But how wonderful is the Lord’s answer? Instead of jumping to the end, He tells us what to expect through all these years. He marks the specific sign at the end of time and then more signs as that last three-and-a-half years unfolds, and right down to the end. And He says, “When you see those things, you who see those things are going to be the same ones who see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with power and great glory.”

Now, that takes us to the next verse which seems obvious to me. The next verse, verse 32, “Truly I say to you, truly.” I love that. As if the Lord needed to qualify anything He said by adding that? As if we had some question? Why does He say that? Why do we have in the Old English, “Verily, verily I say unto you,” or “Truly, truly I say unto you?” It’s for emphatic indication. It is for strong emphasis: I am telling you the truth; this is unequivocal, and I think He says that very often because it’s stunning and He wants to affirm the veracity of it. “Truly I say to you,” there’s no mistaking this, folks. This generation, this generation, will not pass away until all things take place – this generation.

What do you mean this generation? What generation? What is the antecedent of “this”? You would be amazed at all of the answers. Wow! Perhaps a very, very common answer that you may have heard; I’ve read an awful lot about this in recent years, is that this generation refers to the disciples – the disciples. that they are this genea. Genea means generation, people, nation, stock, kind; it’s a pretty generic term. That’s where generic comes from actually. So it’s a very broad term, but could I suppose, linguistically be applied to the disciples and the people who were living at that very time.

So some would say it refers specifically to the disciples. So Jesus is saying this is all going to happen in your lifetime. Wow! If that’s what He meant, He was wrong. He was wrong, and there are some people who say that: Yes, that’s what He meant and He was wrong. And they’re happy for that because if He’s wrong about this then He’s not really God, and He’s not really authoritative, and we don’t have to pay any attention to all the other things He said about how we’re supposed to behave.

And they say He admitted that He could be wrong because in Mark 13:22 He says, “No man knows the day nor the hour, no not even the Son of Man.” So He admitted His own ignorance and so He said that He sort of established the grounds on which He could be wrong. So He meant the disciples, but He was wrong.

He did say that, that no man knows the day nor the hour, not even the Son of Man, but only the Father who is in heaven. But it’s one thing for Him to voluntarily restrict His power, which He did in His incarnation, right? Like He said, “I could if I wanted to, have a legion of angels, but I’ve chosen not to. I could if I wanted to know all of that, but I’ve chosen not to.” It’s one thing for Him to restrict His knowledge in a self-imposed humiliation. It’s quite another thing to be wrong. Those are not the same. And furthermore, by the way, after His incarnation was over He ascended back to full fellowship face-to-face with the Father and in full knowledge, without the limitations of His self-emptying.

Secondly, there are some who suggest – and this is equally a popular one – that it refers to the 70 AD destruction of Jerusalem. And what it means is this generation of people living in Jerusalem at this time, including the disciples – but broader than that, all the populous of this place – they’re going to live to the destruction of Jerusalem which is only 40 years from now. So, this generation will not pass away before all these things come to pass. And this is the most popular amillennial view of this text. Reams have been written trying to defend this – hopelessly, I might add, because how in the world can you put into the 70 AD destruction of Jerusalem, “nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom,” how can you put plagues and pestilences and terrors in the sky? How can you put the devastation of the sun, the moon, the stars, the seas, the powers of the heavens shaken? Come on, that’s not 70 AD. You have one nation, the Romans, coming and attacking Jerusalem.

This is not the time which is indicated here in verse 22 as “the days of divine vengeance,” nor is it the time that all things which are written may be fulfilled. And certainly – certainly for sure – in 70 AD the Son of Man did not come in a cloud with power and great glory. Just not possible. What happened in 70 A.D. was a preview, a mini-preview of the great destruction to come.

Others say it refers to the Jewish race; that it simply means that the Jews will survive till the end. They will not perish as a race. This genea, meaning this race – genea can mean that – Jesus is predicting the survival of the Jewish race. That doesn’t make sense because they already knew they had an everlasting covenant. That’s why they posed the questions. They already knew God had made promises, which we read about in Galatians chapter 3, made to Abraham which God will fulfill to those who are in Christ. They already knew that God had determined an eternal destiny for them, that God had made promises which were never going to be voided.

They knew that the Messiah was their Messiah, the Lord was their Lord, and He would come and establish the Kingdom. He had told them that. They didn’t need to be told that they were going to survive because they already had an everlasting promise that had been reiterated to them by the Messiah Himself.

Another one: Some people say that this generation means the bad people – this generation – that using genea in the sense of an evil generation. In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, it’s sometimes used for the word “door” in Hebrew, which can refer to an evil generation or a righteous generation. And what our Lord is saying is there are going to be wicked people all the way till the Second Coming. Is that news? We don’t need affirmation that we have an everlasting covenant and we don’t need affirmation that there are going to be sinners until the end. It makes no sense; there’s no point. There’s no point in saying they’re going to be Christ-rejecters until the end, or there are going to be evil people until the end. It’s very vague, and why would He make such a point when it’s absolutely obvious?

Another one that is very popular was popularized by Hal Lindsey in the book The Late Great Planet Earth, and some other books that came from that one. It refers to the people who see the birth of the nation Israel. Have you heard that one? And this is based on the fact that the fig tree is an allegorical picture of Israel; that Israel is the fig tree and if you see the fig tree bud, you’re seeing Israel becoming a nation. That happened in 1948, by the way. Israel became a nation.

Well, in Matthew and Mark, they both speak of the fig tree. But Luke adds something. Luke says in verse 29, “Behold the fig tree and all the trees,” showing that this is not something limited to the fig tree which then could be identified with Israel; this is just a general principle, true of a fig tree and true of all trees. Thank you, Luke, for putting that in. It’s a general observation. It’s an analogy, not an allegory.

And by the way, when that came out – that viewpoint – that the generation that was alive in 1948 would see the return of Christ; that conjured up a huge response. That book became the all-time best Christian book seller, and here we are, and that generation is gone. If the generation according to that book is 40 years, that all ended in ’88. We’re twenty years past that and the Lord hasn’t come. So if you’re still holding on to that view, let it go. It’s over, folks; it’s over. That one’s gone. To start out with it was imaginative any way.

You see how complicated things can get? Let me tell you how simple this is. Verse 32, “Truly I say to you, this generation.” What generation? “The generation that sees these things happen will not die until it’s all taken place.” Whoever is among the you who sees these things happen can know this, it’s going to happen soon in your lifetime, and if you see the beginning, you’re going to be there for the end.

If you see Jerusalem surrounded, if you’re alive and you see Jerusalem surrounded and you see the changes and the devastating changes in the universe, you see those signs, you will see the Son of Man. Such a simple thing. If you see the leaves, you know summer is near. If you see the signs, you know Christ is near; He’s at the door.

And our Lord is simply saying, “You asked Me a question. You asked Me, what do we look for? What are the signs?” And I’m telling you this, that generation alive that sees these things will see the Son of Man return. Our Lord is answering the question. And it will come very soon, very soon. As those things begin to disintegrate in the final few years of the tribulation, and particularly in the final months of the final year and the Lord then comes in glory and as Daniel points out, you have a 75-day transition from the judgments at the end of the tribulation brought by the return of Christ to the establishment of His Kingdom, it all happens fast.

If you’re alive and you see the signs and you survive through that and you’re not martyred – and we’re talking about believers here; believers who are alive and looking and waiting for the coming of Christ – if you’re alive when all that starts, you’re going to be there when He returns and you’re going to go into His Kingdom. That’s all it means.

If this is looking for an antecedent, the obvious antecedent is you in verse 31 – you, you. It is this generation – the you that sees these things – that will see it all take place.

Now at this point I have to interject something. I – the way I understand the Scripture and it’s stood the test of time, believe me, and the test of the text through all these years – I don’t believe this is going to include the church because I am convinced that the way to understand the New Testament is that the church will be taken out and then the judgments begin and then a great evangelistic effort begins and people will be converted after the church is gone. They will constitute this generation in the midst of all of this, looking for the return of Christ. - J Mac

#1432 Luke 21 Part 5 The Failing Of The Hearts Of Men

25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21: 25-28 NKJV

Luke 21: 25-28

…10For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light. 11I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless. 12I will make man scarcer than pure gold, and mankind rarer than the gold of Ophir.…
13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger. 14Like a hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land.… Isaiah 13: 10-14

V. 25a  And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars - Jesus' words correspond to those of the earlier prophets. The imagery is similar and it is in reference to coming judgment. There is also a shift here, a heightening of the birth pains. Remember, of the wars and rumors of wars, famines and persecutions, they were told that these things must take place but still the end is not yet. One of the questions in the other gospels was when will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age? He gives the signs of the age, wars, famine, etc., and He also warns about false prophets and those claiming to be Messiah, that if someone says, "look, he's in the desert," well that's not a real sign, don't believe it, don't go after them. Now we shift to what it looks like when the end is drawing near, and the Son of Man is going to appear. This also looks back to the times of Moses, and the picture of one of the judgments of Egypt, darkness, the kind you can feel.

There will be signs (semeion) in sun and moon and stars - The NAS marginal note on "signs" is "attesting miracles." Remember the sun is earth's own star which Matthew's parallel description says will be darkened (Mt 24:29+). Luke does not tell us when these signs will occur. But if we compare the similar passages in Matthew and Mark, it is clear that these celestial signs follow the "tribulation," which in Matthew refers to the last 3.5 years of Daniel's Seventieth Week, called the Great Tribulation (cf "a time of distress such as never occurred" = Da 12:1+). - Precept Austin

…7When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light. 8All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness upon your land,’ declares the Lord GOD. 9‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know.… Ezekiel 32: 7-9

…30I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD. 32And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the remnant called by the LORD.… Joel 2: 30-32

…9And in that day, declares the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the daytime. 10I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth and every head to be shaved. I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, and its outcome like a bitter day. 11Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.… Amos 8: 9-11

V. 25b And on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity - When the bowl judgments come and people have been following the false prophets and leaders that are not of  God, they will suffer greatly for a lack of the real word of God in that day. Every way they turn will be disaster, and their leaders will fail them. Clichés will be useless against the reality of judgment, just like when Jeremiah prophesied opposite of the false prophets. They insisted that the punishment would not happen, then they shifted and insisted the punishment (Babylonian captivity) would only be for 2 years, and they were wrong.

1“At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up. There will be a time of distress, the likes of which will not have occurred from the beginning of nations until that time. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.… Daniel 12: 1-3

And on the earth dismay (sunoche) among nations, in perplexity (aporia) at the roaring of the sea and the waves - The earth is personified as perplexed and bewildered which is in fact a description of all those who dwell on the earth in this divinely decreed day of destruction describe in graphic detail in Revelation 6-19. Dismay means the feeling of despair in the face of obstacles, a lowering of one's spirits so they become downhearted. Dismay can also refer to fear resulting from the awareness of danger and there will be no dearth of danger in the time of the Revelation. Norman Crawford says waves is salos which "means "to toss", particularly the swelling and tossing of the waves or "billows" (RV) of the sea. The "roaring" (v. 25, ēchos) of these tossing billows adds to the chaos leaving people completely confused without escape and nowhere to turn. (What the Bible Teaches: Luke) - Precept Austin

Aporia is used in the Septuagint to describe God's judgment on Israel for disobedience to the mosaic covenant - "sudden terror" (Lxx = aporia)(Lev 26:18), smiting with "consumption" (Lxx = aporia) (Dt 28:22), "distress" (Isaiah 8:22+).

Perplexity describes trouble or confusion resulting from complexity, including an inability to deal with or understand something. CSB translates it as "nations bewildered" which is a good description as bewildered means caused to lose one's bearings, becoming perplexed or confuses especially by a complexity, variety, or multitude of objects or considerations, in this case the variety being divinely wrought celestial signs. The next verse describes the effect of their inner dismay and perplexity -- fainting because of the overwhelming evidence that God is once and for all bringing divine destruction to this world! - Precept Austin

V. 26 Men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth - A little more detail as to the perplexity, and imagine, men are afraid of global warming now, a thing they don't even understand, imagine when the heavens are shaken.

…35As long as it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not receive during the Sabbaths when you lived in it. 36As for those of you who survive, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will flee as one flees the sword, and fall when no one pursues them. 37They will stumble over one another as before the sword, though no one is behind them. So you will not be able to stand against your enemies.… Leviticus 26: 35-37

10But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare. 11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness 12as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat.… 2 Peter 3: 10-12

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory - Unmistakable, and by the way, this puts the events of 70 A.D. into perspective.  This is a global thing, seen far and wide, and you don't miss something like the heavens shaking and the Son of Man coming on a cloud. The events leading up to Christ's final return to judge the world will have gone from the beginning of the birth pains, from 60 hertz to a million, all the major events unfolding in Daniel's 70th week, and the intensity growing exponentially by the middle of the week, the 3.5 year mark when the Abomination of Desolation is placed in the temple and the Antichrist demands to be worshiped. These will be the signs that things are coming to a close, and they will be immense, unmistakable, yet with the lack of God's word in the mouths of men, the lack of sound teachers, many will still misunderstand.

…12As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed, but they were granted an extension of life for a season and a time. 13In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. 14And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.… Daniel 7: 12-14

…6who has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and power forever and ever! Amen. 7Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him— even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen. 8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and was and is to come—the Almighty.… Revelation 1: 6-8

13And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write, “Blessed are the dead—those who die in the Lord from this moment on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.” 14And I looked and saw a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was One like the Son of Man, with a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand. 15Then another angel came out of the temple, crying out in a loud voice to the One seated on the cloud, “Swing Your sickle and reap, because the time has come to harvest; for the crop of the earth is ripe.”… Revelation 14: 13-15

V. 28 Now when these things begin to happen - Don't get excited about the other stuff, but for those who come to Christ during the tribulation, those elect of the Jewish remnant and the gentiles who hear and respond to the angel, to the 2 preachers, look up. When? When the signs occur in the heavens, in the sun, the moon and the stars, when the seas are disturbed beyond anything we have ever seen, when the heavens are shaken. The time of their redemption is near, it is getting close to the sign of the Son of  Man, which will be the Son Himself, coming on the clouds.

…8He will swallow up death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face and remove the disgrace of His people from the whole earth. For the LORD has spoken. 9And in that day it will be said, “Surely this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.” 10For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain. But Moab will be trampled in his place as straw is trodden into the dung pile.… Isaiah 25: 8-10
