#1146 Ezekiel 15 Kindling

And the word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, how does the wood of the vine surpass any wood, the vine branch that is among the trees of the forest? 3 Is wood taken from it to make anything? Do people take a peg from it to hang any vessel on it? 4 Behold, it is given to the fire for fuel. When the fire has consumed both ends of it, and the middle of it is charred, is it useful for anything? 5 Behold, when it was whole, it was used for nothing. How much less, when the fire has consumed it and it is charred, can it ever be used for anything! 6 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so have I given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 7 And I will set my face against them. Though they escape from the fire, the fire shall yet consume them, and you will know that I am the Lord, when I set my face against them. 8 And I will make the land desolate, because they have acted faithlessly, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 15 ESV

Ezekiel 15 Kindling Vine

…18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.… Matthew 7: 18-20

How does the wood of the vine surpass any wood - The concept of the vine would not be lost on such an audience. They were familiar with vineyards, and they would be familiar with wild vines, but also with the writings of Isaiah in the song of the vineyard - see link above for sour grapes. In Isaiah's illustration Israel is the vineyard that though greatly cared for, ideally located, ground tilled and regularly watered, yet it did not produce good fruit. Note here that the word fruit is not even mentioned, so what is left but to judge her upon the quality of her wood.

The word parable is derived from two Greek words (para = beside and ballo = to cast or throw) and so literally means a throwing beside, in order that the truth about one may throw light on the other. In other words, something familiar is used to illustrate some truth which is less familiar. - Precept Austin

Is wood taken from it to make anything - What is the vine sought for? In a vineyard it would be desired for its grapes, but a wild vine, growing on and clinging to the trees of the forest, what is it's worth to you? The cedars of Lebanon were famous and sought out for their wood, even to build the houses of kings, but what of this dry, fruitless vine? Jerusalem, the city set high on a hill, Israel, described as the vineyard of the Beloved, yet here compared to a feral vine.

"Jerusalem was planted a choice and noble vine, wholly a right seed (Jer2:21) and, if it had brought forth fruit suitable to its character as a holy city, it would have been the glory both of God and Israel. It was a vine which God's right hand had planted, a branch out of a dry ground, which, though its original was mean and despicable, God had made strong for himself (Ps80:15), to be to him for a name and for a praise (Jer13:11, KJV). - Matthew Henry

Do people take a peg from it - In the middle and near east people would have pegs on their walls or supporting beams, and on them would hang things that they wanted ready access to, like pots and pans. For it to be useful as a peg the wood would have to be sturdy, so it is a rhetorical question which is easy for his listeners to answer. "No, we would not use that because it is too soft when it is alive and tender and too weak and brittle when it is dry." The image of what wood they would use would be something always other than this type of vine.

Behold, it is given to the fire for fuel - Here is it's known use for them; it is kindling to keep a fire fed till it takes hold of a more substantial, longer burning wood.

When it was whole it was used for nothing - No one used it for much more than fuel, and when it was whole it was not used for carpentry, so now that it is burned what is it good for? The fire did not improve it because it was reduced to ashes. The better vine is not the feral vine, but the regenerate vine, grafted into the life giving vine, producing the fruits of repentance. My Savior uses the vine in a perfect illustration of it's value, and where that can be found.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15: 1-11

So I have given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem - The city set high on a hill, that which was supposed to be a lamp in the dark, pointing the way to salvation, bringing forth fruit. Now hers will be a quick light, a flash in the pan, the glow that comes from a consuming fire, like Sodom but more drawn out and delayed, for her wickedness exceeded the pagans that looked on. Jerusalem is the vine in this parable, and contrary to popular opinion at that time, Babylon was coming to burn her down.

The fire shall yet consume them - This had literal implications in the escape of the puppet king, who was made blind while his sons were killed in front of him. Also, many of the elders and leaders of the people were captured and killed outside the city. Their escape was fruitless as well.

8 You brought a vine out of Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
9 You cleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 It sent out its branches to the sea
and its shoots to the River.
12 Why then have you broken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13 The boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.

14 Turn again, O God of hosts!
Look down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
15 the stock that your right hand planted,
and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.
16 They have burned it with fire; they have cut it down;
may they perish at the rebuke of your face!
17 But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
18 Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!

19 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts!
Let your face shine, that we may be saved! Psalm 80: 8-19 ESV

"If a vine be fruitful, it is valuable. But if not fruitful, it is worthless and useless, it is cast into the fire. Thus man is capable of yielding a precious fruit, in living to God; this is the sole end of his existence; and if he fails in this, he is of no use but to be destroyed. What blindness then attaches to those who live in the total neglect of God and of true religion! This similitude is applied to Jerusalem. Let us beware of an unfruitful profession. Let us come to Christ, and seek to abide in him, and to have his words abide in us." - Matthew Henry

#1145 Ezekiel 14 Part 2 Individual Responsibility

12 And the word of the Lord came to me: 13 “Son of man, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it and break its supply of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast, 14 even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness, declares the Lord God.

15 “If I cause wild beasts to pass through the land, and they ravage it, and it be made desolate, so that no one may pass through because of the beasts, 16 even if these three men were in it, as I live, declares the Lord God, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.

17 “Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say, Let a sword pass through the land, and I cut off from it man and beast, 18 though these three men were in it, as I live, declares the Lord God, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they alone would be delivered.

19 “Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it with blood, to cut off from it man and beast, 20 even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, declares the Lord God, they would deliver neither son nor daughter. They would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness.

21 “For thus says the Lord God: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four disastrous acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast! 22 But behold, some survivors will be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out; behold, when they come out to you, and you see their ways and their deeds, you will be consoled for the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, for all that I have brought upon it. 23 They will console you, when you see their ways and their deeds, and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 14: 12-23 ESV

Ezekiel 14: 12-23 Jerusalem Will Not Be Spared

“In all the procedures of divine judgment the principle of individual responsibility can never be relaxed. Hence the need of personal piety – the absolute necessity that men and women should pray for themselves-that each one should repent for himself, that each one should believe for himself; and that each one should in his own proper person be born again by the effectual operation of the Spirit of God. No proxy in these matters is possible.” (Spurgeon)

When a land sins against me - It is not the earth obviously, itself, but rather those given dominion of it, that bring the stain upon it. Israel's sins were national sins, the leaders were but a representation of the overall general condition. The matter is more grievous here, because unlike Sodom and Gomorrah which met with a rapid destruction, Jerusalem had been given much light.

…25God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.… Genesis 1: 25-27

…27For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled. 28So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you. 29Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.… Leviticus 18: 27-29

And send famine upon it - This will happen during the siege  most notably, Jerusalem will be cut off from outside supply, and the people will turn to cannibalism. Now, this also corresponds well with the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse mentioned in Revelation 6. Keep in mind that the first horse, the white horse, is given a crown, this is to bring the world into a time of global peace. This is the first half of the Tribulation, and much like Ezekiel's time it is a promise of peace, when there will actually be destruction. It is a time of false prophets and antichrists. The black horse is easily distinguished as famine.

I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. Revelation 6: 1-8

4Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.… Matthew 24: 4-6

Noah, Daniel and Job were in it - Noah was a preacher of righteousness, who for 120 years built an ark and defied the whole of humanity to follow God's command in the saving of his house.

…6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. 7By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. Hebrews 11: 6-7

Daniel - He was a contemporary of Ezekiel, and it is interesting that He is already known for his righteousness. Daniel is actually elevated while in Babylon, and he comes to hold a very prominent position, but this is a cause for his peers to hate him. Jealousy is an ugly thing. Daniel, the greatest citizen of Babylon, commits an act of civil disobedience because the law that is made contradicts the truth. He is told not to pray to God, but rather to a king that was made by God, but Daniel instead follows God and ends up being thrown into the lion's den.

Job - Job loses everything, including his children, his wealth and his health, yet he refuses to give up his integrity, he refuses to curse God. If all three of these men were in Jerusalem, it wouldn't matter, God would save them for the sake of their righteousness, but He would still destroy the nation for it's sin and unbelief. They love the idea of ancestry, being related to Abraham, having the religious symbols of the temple, the feasts and the sacrifices, but God is letting them know that their hopes are misplaced. Abraham negotiated with God, interceding on behalf of Sodom, but the small number of 10 righteous could not be found, yet God removed a few for the sake of His friend Abraham, and God's own divine plan and good pleasure. God allowed Job to mediate on behalf of three of his friends, those who had accused him falsely, yet God will not accept such prayers on behalf of Jerusalem, not even from these 3.

Some of the better sort of people in Jerusalem might perhaps think that, if Daniel (of whose fame in the king of Babylon's court they had heard much) had but continued in Jerusalem, it would have been spared for his sake, as the magicians in Babylon were. "No," says God, "though you had him, who was as eminently good in bad times and places as Noah in the old world and Job in the land of Uz, yet a reprieve should not be obtained." In the places that are most corrupt, and in the ages that are most degenerate, there is a remnant which God reserves to himself, and which still hold fast their integrity and stand fair for the honour of delivering the land, as the innocent are said to do, Job 22:30. - Matthew Henry

…21The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.” 22But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams. 23For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”… 1 Samuel 15: 21-23

If I cause wild beasts to pass through the land - Locust have come and destroyed crops before, adding to famine conditions. Rats have been associated with the spread of disease as well as mosquitos. I have read somewhere before that mosquitos are actually the number one man killer of the animal world. In Israel's early period going into the land of Canaan, God had them go in measures, and He even sent the hornets before them, but He didn't give them more area than they could handle at once, lest the wild animals be too much for them. I live in Florida, and I hear a lot of people say really dumb things, like, "alligators won't bother you if you don't bother them, they won't eat humans." That's stupid, I admire alligators, was terrified of them when I was a kid, but I loved fishing a lot so it put me around them. I didn't get over my fear by pretending that their was no basis for it. I acknowledged that this creature had all the tools necessary to take me down. My reaction time would be too slow, he was stronger than me, faster in the water, had teeth and an incredible bight force, a thick hide, stealth, and could hold his breath under water longer than me. I have only had two bad instances with gators that wouldn't back off, but I am amazed at the stuff that comes out of people's mouth and they think it's science, "this is the swimming area", oh, like the gator reads that sign and doesn't pass through that part of the river. It would be like me explaining human relationships to crocodiles by showing the video of Pocho to a group of people who had never seen or heard of crocodile's, then saying go have fun with some crocs. That would be ignoring a lot of history, and also a lot of negative interactions that have occurred over time. In Florida, alligators were hunted very heavily up until about the middle of last century, and then still in rural areas where they come in contact with people's animals. I love them, I think they are beautiful, but I also respect their power and can't ignore the macro historical aspect of human interactions. Their fear of man has come from hunting, and that doesn't happen nearly as much now, especially in wildlife preservation areas. I have often wondered, watching them, how long did it take for them to gain that fear of man, and how many generations would it take for them to lose it? What would it take for humans to be added back to the general menu, to view our paddle boards, kayaks and canoes as platters on which we were bringing lunch? Just pondering.

…21If you walk in hostility toward Me and refuse to obey Me, I will multiply your plagues seven times, according to your sins. 22I will send wild animals against you to rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and reduce your numbers, until your roads lie desolate. 23And if in spite of these things you do not accept My discipline, but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,… Leviticus 26: 21-23

…2If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for famine, to famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity.’ 3I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the LORD: the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away, and the birds of the air and beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.… Jeremiah 15: 2-4

…28I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites and Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29I will not drive them out before you in a single year; otherwise the land would become desolate and wild animals would multiply against you. 30Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess the land.… Exodus 23: 28-30

Or if I bring a sword through the land - This is coming with Nebuchadnezzar; Jerusalem, contrary to what the false prophets are saying, will not escape judgement. God rules over kings, directs them to do His work. Above we see that He rules over the animal kingdom, and is where are food truly comes from. He designed it, spoke it into being, and that we can observe in that everything is coded with language.

Or if I send a pestilence - Everyone is dying already, death has entered the world through sin, and here it seems is the pale horse, coming with disease to take another part of mankind, cut off before his hoped for years. Look how the world was shaken by covid19, which is small in comparison to some diseases, yet the reaction brought food shortages, inflation and almost made toilet paper into a black market industry.

When you see their ways and their deeds - He mentions Noah, Daniel and Job as known for their righteousness, and this is brought up several times. In contrast here, Ezekiel refers to those that are left alive in Jerusalem, by their ways and their deeds. There is a positive affirmation of  Noah and the other two faithful men mentioned, but of these God says, "you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done." The evidence will be overwhelmingly in God's favor. When they see these survivors, and come to know of their ways and deeds, God will be seen as not only just, but more patient than any man.

“Most recent commentators recognize that the context demands that these words refer to ‘unrighteous doings’ for which due punishment has been meted out, and Cooke points out that in Ezekiel doings always has a bad sense. So the remnant of the fugitives would be wicked men.” (Taylor)

ii. “This ‘unspiritual remnant’ will provide evidence of Yahweh’s justice in annihilating the nation. Instead of responding to their narrow escape with a change in behavior, their pattern of impious conduct will be on display for the entire exilic community to observe.” (Block)

…9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve. 11Like a partridge hatching eggs it did not lay is the man who makes a fortune unjustly. In the middle of his days his riches will desert him, and in the end he will be the fool.”… Jeremiah 17: 9-11

…9So we aspire to please Him, whether we are here in this body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad. 11Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your conscience as well.… 2 Corinthians 5: 9-11

…11It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.” 12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. 13Therefore let us stop judging one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.… Romans 14: 11-13

#1144 Ezekiel 14 Part 1 Into His Heart

Then certain of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me: 3 “Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and set the stumbling block of their iniquity before their faces. Should I indeed let myself be consulted by them? 4 Therefore speak to them and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Any one of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart and sets the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him as he comes with the multitude of his idols, 5 that I may lay hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, who are all estranged from me through their idols.

6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations. 7 For any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel, who separates himself from me, taking his idols into his heart and putting the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to a prophet to consult me through him, I the Lord will answer him myself. 8 And I will set my face against that man; I will make him a sign and a byword and cut him off from the midst of my people, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 9 And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the Lord, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. 10 And they shall bear their punishment—the punishment of the prophet and the punishment of the inquirer shall be alike— 11 that the house of Israel may no more go astray from me, nor defile themselves anymore with all their transgressions, but that they may be my people and I may be their God, declares the Lord God.”

Jerusalem Will Not Be Spared

23 They will console you, when you see their ways and their deeds, and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 14 ESV

Ezekiel 14: 1-11 Idolatrous Elders Condemned

…13Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men. 14Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.” 15Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD. In darkness they do their works and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?”… Isaiah 29: 13-15

Certain of the elders of Israel came to me - Ezekiel is a great prophet, in line with Isaiah, Jeremiah and Daniel, and these elders of the captivity are going to him in order to hear from the Lord.

Have taken their idols into their hearts - We don't see things the way God sees; He looks through the white washed exteriors and into the hearts. These men were coming to hear from the prophet, but they were already defying God's word. They have come to be hearers of the word but not doers, and what profit is there in that? If you come to ask God about gravity and then jump off the skyscraper anyway, what did you learn, or what good was it to you? Men will always prove God right either way, but it is eternally tragic to hear yet not take to heart. Something else is in their hearts though, and they have followed after the pattern of this world, their superstitions, their feelings, the common wave and tide. The defiance of God's word is already in place, and all these prophets have been reformers, calling them back to what they have read but not believed.

…16“As for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! 17Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and good things, and we saw no disaster. 18But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.”… Jeremiah 44: 16-18

Should I indeed let Myself be consulted by them - More than fair question. I have grown weary of such circular conversations. I remember a friend, actually more than one friend over the years, and he was heading for a divorce, but wanted to talk with me. "I don't want to be divorced," he said. Oh, well have you considered not cheating on your wife anymore? "It's more complicated than that," he answered. Really, I said, and what does she say? What does she want from you? "She wants me to go to counseling and quit seeing my girlfriend."  So then that's what I would do - quit cheating on your wife and go to marital counseling with her. "Yeah, I should of known you wouldn't understand, I told you it is more complicated than that." Well then explain. Which of course he couldn't really explain without the caveat of her dropping the demands of the marital contract, which he was in breech of, not her. When he finally sort of, kinda, put it into words, "I want to be able to come home and watch movies with her, for her to be there for me, cook my meals, wash my clothes, love me, but I want her to understand that I am also in love with this other girl and need her approval as well." Got it, so you want to change the definition of marriage, the vows that you made before God and man in reference to being faithful and forsaking all others. "Yep, like I said, you wouldn't get it." These elders also play the whore, but still want to hear from God, especially now that things are not going so well.

8Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the nations and throughout the lands. 9Then in the nations to which they have been carried captive, your survivors will remember Me— how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts that turned away from Me, and by their eyes that lusted after idols. So they will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their abominations. 10And they will know that I am the LORD; I did not declare in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.… Ezekiel 6: 8-10

Repent and turn away from your idols - Confess it as sin, quit pretending that it's hidden or worse, teaching others that it is okay.

An idol, however, can be any false idea about God or substitute for Him that turns us away from knowing His true character. John stated that Jesus Christ is the true God (v.20). To know Jesus is to know the Father. To be intimately related to His Son is to be forever related to the eternal God.

It is possible for me to worship an idol I call "Jesus" that leads me away from Him. Perhaps my Jesus resembles a teddy bear that lulls me to sleep, or an indulgent father, or a Santa Claus who doesn't take my sin seriously. Such misconceptions are not the Jesus of the Bible but an idol. That's the reason John warned us to keep ourselves from idols. - Precept Austin

Turn away your faces from all your abominations - They were elders, and those that should be upholding the moral law before the people, but they were hypocrites. They loved their shiny gold, and would sacrifice the widow and the orphan to get it.

…13I know where you live, where the throne of Satan sits. Yet you have held fast to My name and have not denied your faith in Me, even in the day when My faithful witness Antipas was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality. 15In the same way, some of you also hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.… Revelation 2: 13-15

…8He who increases his wealth by interest and usury lays it up for one who is kind to the poor. 9Whoever turns his ear away from hearing the law, even his prayer is detestable. 10He who leads the upright along the path of evil will fall into his own pit, but the blameless will inherit what is good.… Proverbs 28: 8-10

I will set my face against that man - He will become an object lesson, showing that God means what He says, and that He will not be mocked.

"Make him a sign and a proverb" A sign is a non-verbal symbol which conveys a specific message or meaning. In this case the effect of God setting His face against these evil men would result in a significant event (severing these men from Israel) that betokens God presence and His intention.

A proverb is a pithy maxim or a saying which communicates wisdom usually in a terse, vivid and easy to remember manner. - Precept Austin

If the prophet is deceived and speaks a word - God has the power to keep a man from doing that, yet He can judge by having that man do what is in his heart, allowing that desire already within to be grasped by that temptation from without. Many false teachers start out in good churches, respected in their schools of learning, yet the love of money and other idols pulls them away.

Prevailed (pathah) means to be open, spacious or wide and is figuratively used to describe one who is open to enticement, not having developed discriminating judgment as to what is right or wrong. This word describes one who is easily deceived and is so translated by several of the other versions. God uses this word to warn Israel to

Beware, lest your hearts be deceived and you turn away and serve other gods and worship them." (Dt 11:16)

The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge has this explanatory note

That is, I have suffered him to be deceived; I have given him up to "strong delusions to believe a lie," as a just judgment upon him for going after idols, and setting up false pretensions to inspiration. God, according to the genius of the Hebrew language, is often said to do a thing, which He only suffers, or permits.

I'm not a huge fan of Daily Bread all the time, but this is a good application.

A Slow Fourth - When golf professional Paul Azinger learned in 1993 that he had cancer, he said, "I was in shock. I had thought that Dr. Jobe would tell me they had discovered some form of weird infection in my shoulder or possibly even a stress fracture. The one word I never expected to hear him say was cancer."

The good news was that it was curable. Now, after some time away from the professional golf tour for chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the man who's called "Zinger" is back, cancer-free.

When people ask Azinger if golf is still important to him, he says, "Yes and no. Yes, of course golf is important to me. I love the game; it is how I make a living. But no, golf is no longer at the top of my priority list. In fact, it runs a slow fourth. My priorities now are God, my family, my friends, and golf. Golf is no longer my god. Golf is hitting a little white ball. God is my God, and God is a whole lot bigger than golf."

A serious disease has a way of putting things in perspective. First place belongs to the Lord; we are to worship nothing in our lives above Him (Dt. 6:13-19).

Make God number one in your life, and your dearest pastime on earth will become only a "slow fourth." — David C. Egner

#1143 Ezekiel 13 Tell Your Heart To Be Quiet

The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel, who are prophesying, and say to those who prophesy from their own hearts: ‘Hear the word of the Lord!’ 3 Thus says the Lord God, Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! 4 Your prophets have been like jackals among ruins, O Israel. 5 You have not gone up into the breaches, or built up a wall for the house of Israel, that it might stand in battle in the day of the Lord. 6 They have seen false visions and lying divinations. They say, ‘Declares the Lord,’ when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they expect him to fulfill their word. 7 Have you not seen a false vision and uttered a lying divination, whenever you have said, ‘Declares the Lord,’ although I have not spoken?”

8 Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord God. 9 My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord God. 10 Precisely because they have misled my people, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a wall, these prophets smear it with whitewash, 11 say to those who smear it with whitewash that it shall fall! There will be a deluge of rain, and you, O great hailstones, will fall, and a stormy wind break out. 12 And when the wall falls, will it not be said to you, ‘Where is the coating with which you smeared it?’ 13 Therefore thus says the Lord God: I will make a stormy wind break out in my wrath, and there shall be a deluge of rain in my anger, and great hailstones in wrath to make a full end. 14 And I will break down the wall that you have smeared with whitewash, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you shall perish in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 15 Thus will I spend my wrath upon the wall and upon those who have smeared it with whitewash, and I will say to you, The wall is no more, nor those who smeared it, 16 the prophets of Israel who prophesied concerning Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her, when there was no peace, declares the Lord God.

17 “And you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own hearts. Prophesy against them 18 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the women who sew magic bands upon all wrists, and make veils for the heads of persons of every stature, in the hunt for souls! Will you hunt down souls belonging to my people and keep your own souls alive? 19 You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, putting to death souls who should not die and keeping alive souls who should not live, by your lying to my people, who listen to lies.

20 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against your magic bands with which you hunt the souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms, and I will let the souls whom you hunt go free, the souls like birds. 21 Your veils also I will tear off and deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand as prey, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 22 Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life, 23 therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. And you shall know that I am the Lord.” Ezekiel 13 ESV

Ezekiel 13 Woe to the Foolish Prophets

Who follow their own spirit - It is not God speaking to them; the Holy Spirit is not guiding them. They speak what they come up with from their own depraved minds and feelings. They judge what is said by how much they would want to hear it, and by it's marketing value, "what do my listener's want?" Moses, Elijah, Isaiah and Jeremiah have all warned against this type.

1If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you, 2and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,” 3you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul.… Deuteronomy 13: 1-3

…21You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?” 22When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18: 21-22

Your prophets have been like jackals among ruins - They can't rebuild, but they will dig burrows into what others have done. They didn't take down the game, but when the lion looks the other way they are quick to tear off pieces. These are scavengers, opportunists, stirring up contentions in order that they may profit from them.

That it might stand in battle - These called themselves spiritual, but Jerusalem is in ruins spiritually, and this puts them at odds with God. You gave the people no sound direction, only lying visions and now they are grossly unprepared for what is coming. These prophets draw God's wrath, the day of His vengeance; their wisdom is not wisdom at all, for if they had any it would have shown itself in silence.

Although I have not spoken - They keep saying, "declares the Lord." Whenever I hear men saying that today, or "thus saith", "hear the word of the Lord", if they are not reading from the Bible then I walk away.

…14Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say, ‘You must not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying to you a lie. 15For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, and yet they are prophesying falsely in My name; therefore I will banish you, and you will perish— you and the prophets who prophesy to you.” 16Then I said to the priests and to all this people, “This is what the LORD says: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, ‘Look, very soon now the articles from the house of the LORD will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying to you a lie.… Jeremiah 27: 14-16

My hand - You are afraid of not being liked by men, of not having riches here, of not saying what people want to hear, but you have made a far more horrifying enemy.

…27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.… Matthew 10: 27-29

Nor be enrolled in the register - Some 70 years later this will be seen when Ezra returns with people to Jerusalem.

…61And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name). 62These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. 63The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest to consult the Urim and Thummim.… Ezra 2: 61-63

Say to those who smear it with whitewash - The prophets and the priest had taken Judaism and turned it into an abomination like that of Roman Catholicism, wherein they kept the feasts, they enjoyed rituals, but also added upon the law things that God never said, and removed the weightier things. The religion they built was flawed, the wall was poorly put together and the answer they came up with was paint it, cover it up. Man looks on the outside, but God looks upon the heart.

…26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well. 27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of impurity. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.… Matthew 23: 26-28

When there was no peace - Somehow these prophets saw what was not, and this fed a people who wanted the comfort of their words, but Babylon came like hail and tore down what remained.

Woe to the women who sew magic bands upon all wrists - There were also female false prophets, and many of these seem to employ the sorcery common to the land, blending Judaism with paganism.

They told deliberate lies to those who consulted them, and came to them to be advised, and to be told their fortune: "You do mischief by your lying to my people that hear your lies (v. 19); they come to be told the truth, but you tell them lies; and, because you humour them in their sins, they are willing to hear you." Note, It is ill with those people who can better hear pleasing lies than unpleasing truths; and it is a temptation to those who lie in wait to deceive to tell lies when they find people willing to hear them and to excuse themselves with this, Si populus vult decipi, decipiatur-If the people will be deceived, let them. - Matthew Henry

“We can only guess at what, precisely, were the magic wristbands and head veils created by the sorceresses.” (Vawter and Hoppe)

iii. “In Babylonia Jewish women were selling charms and’ spells. They were ready to do anything for even a small reward, putting a curse on the innocent, and promising a long and safe life for wrongdoers.” (Wright)

“Women held a higher place in Israel than among most other nations. While there were no priestesses in Israel, the nation knew the prophetic ministry of women.” (Feinberg) There are several examples:

· Miriam, the sister of Moses (Exodus 15:20, Numbers 12:2).

· Deborah (Judges 4:4).

· Huldah (2 Kings 22:14).

· The wife of Isaiah (Isaiah 8:3).

· Noadiah, a false prophetess (Nehemiah 6:14).

· Anna, the daughter of Phanuel (Luke 2:36).

· The four daughters of Philip (Acts 21:9).

In the hunt for souls - They used the afore mentioned items as part of their witchcraft. They were mediums, putting curses upon people, like the prophet Balaam would do, but also speaking to the dead, raising up or "hunting" their souls. Necromancy was forbidden by God, but people sought them out just like the false prophets on tv, to hear a word, to know the future, to get advice from beyond. I have sat with "Christians" today that hold Dr. Phil in higher esteem than one who is faithful to the word of God, and yet this man has a necromancer on his show and refers to him as an expert on the spiritual. Churches let charlatans in their pulpits all the time, like Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer, Beth Moore, all preaching against the self denial that Jesus calls His followers to.

7Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her.” “There is a medium at Endor,” his servants replied. 8So Saul disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”… 1 Samuel 28: 7-8

…19I know your deeds—your love, your faith, your service, your perseverance—and your latter deeds are greater than your first. 20But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, she is unwilling.… Revelation 2: 19-21

Alexander had a different understanding of this barley and pieces of bread: “Barley and bread were also instruments of sorcery (v.19). Some have understood the bread and barley to represent the cheap payment these prophetesses would accept in return for their occult practices; but Hittite practices and later Syrian rituals demonstrate that divination was carried out with barley bread either as part of the pagan sacrificial ritual or as a means of determining whether the victim would live or die.”

That he shall not turn from his evil way - Like the mother that refuses to punish or allow punishment of her child, she has encouraged him not to repent, for in their foolish minds he is just a good hearted boy that once in a while does bad things. If you give money to a prosperity teacher then they will have a good word for you, though that is not what your soul needs. Repent and be saved, the call has gone out, deny yourself and take up the cross, you must be born again.

To save his life - And what good have you done anyone? It was not in your power to change what God has said, though heaven and earth pass away, His word will remain, and He says, "the wages of sin is death."

1What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?… Romans 6: 1-2

…3So when you, O man, pass judgment on others, yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance? 5But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.… Romans 2: 3-5
