#836.5 Favored Of His Father Psalm 105 Part 2

Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
3 Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
6 O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

7 He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
8 He remembers his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your portion for an inheritance.”

12 When they were few in number,
of little account, and sojourners in it,
13 wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
14 he allowed no one to oppress them;
he rebuked kings on their account,
15 saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,
do my prophets no harm!”

16 When he summoned a famine on the land
and broke all supply of bread,
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 His feet were hurt with fetters;
his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until what he had said came to pass,
the word of the Lord tested him.
20 The king sent and released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free;
21 he made him lord of his house
and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to bind his princes at his pleasure
and to teach his elders wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt;
Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful
and made them stronger than their foes.
25 He turned their hearts to hate his people,
to deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent Moses, his servant,
and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 They performed his signs among them
and miracles in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness, and made the land dark;
they did not rebel against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood
and caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
even in the chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
and gnats throughout their country.
32 He gave them hail for rain,
and fiery lightning bolts through their land.
33 He struck down their vines and fig trees,
and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the locusts came,
young locusts without number,
35 which devoured all the vegetation in their land
and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the first fruits of all their strength.

37 Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold,
and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed,
for dread of them had fallen upon it.

39 He spread a cloud for a covering,
and fire to give light by night.
40 They asked, and he brought quail,
and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.
41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
it flowed through the desert like a river.
42 For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham, his servant.

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with singing.
44 And he gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil,
45 that they might keep his statutes
and observe his laws.
Praise the Lord! Psalm 105

A Psalm recounting the acts of God.

When they were few in number - They were not yet a nation, but rather that tiny mustard seed, frail and surrounded by hostile neighbors. Jacob knows this clearly and reasonably, but his sons are another story.

Few and Proud

Answers Me in my distress

- Saying, touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. Abraham and his seed were in the midst of the world a generation of priests anointed to present sacrifice unto the most High God; since to them the oracles were committed, they were also the prophets of mankind; and they were kings too--a royal priesthood; hence they had received a threefold anointing. Their holy office surrounded them with a sacredness which rendered it sacrilege to molest them. - C. H. Spurgeon

When He summoned a famine on the land - God is not like politicians, and this is a jump for parts of what follows comes before, but God shows Himself sovereign even in our trials. Hunger is His agent, famine is His servant, our trials are His ministers to us, ever growing us in the faith.

He had sent a man ahead of them - What a shadow, does not my Lord walk before me, humbling Himself to the will of His Father, taking on the form of a servant, dressed in frail humanity. Joseph had a dream of later rule, but he was sold by his brothers into slavery. He was a slave, who out performed all others, a man of great integrity. He was then accused of a crime he did not commit. He was taken to prison where he interpreted the dreams of others. He was forgotten of men but not of God, and in due time he was called to interpret for the Pharaoh. As the messenger of famine was urging Israel along, Joseph was teaching a nation how to govern and prepare. Hunger drew his brothers to the place where Joseph was used by God so that they all might live. He even forgives those who wrote him off as dead, surely he was dead to them.

…19 But Joseph replied, “Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish a day like this— to preserve the lives of many people. 21 Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” So Joseph reassured his brothers and spoke kindly to them.… Genesis 50: 19-21

…6 Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.… Philippians 2: 6-8

I am stuck once again, this time recounting with the song writer, the life of Joseph. Looking at the scripture above, and stepping way back in consideration of the whole, this is peace, Joseph being groomed by God, grew in an understanding of the sovereignty of God. Paul will also echo these same thoughts and principles in his writings to the churches. The story of Joseph is a picture of what will later be explained in the life of Christ, and the teachings of the Apostles. Every juncture of Joseph's life prepared him for the next, looking back he can see that God was in all of it. If we can get this it will change the way we respond to our trials. This was not lost on Paul either, and it is one of the greatest comforts of the faith.

27 And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers.… Romans 8: 27-29

Joseph's earthly father viewed him as the favored son, the firstborn of his favorite wife. In a corrupt world this does not lead to a spiritual advantage. People complain and I have to deal with it often myself, "this person is qualified because he is the son of, she is his daughter, has this degree, a member of this club, is good looking, dresses the part, is popular." "We have to hire them because of their pedigree, or because of diversity and inclusion." What if they are not qualified? What if they can't perform the duty assigned? What if there is a more qualified individual who is outside of all these clubs, well oddly enough, that would be actual fair practice and consideration. That would lead to real diversity and inclusion, by stressing actual merit, integrity and performance. Human favoritism leads to spoiling, delusion, stunting of the individual. Favoring honesty, integrity, ability, experience, that builds not only the individual but their character becomes a light for everyone around them. God removes him from his earthly father and the inferior grooming that would result. Joseph will be made into a memory, a photo on a milk carton, lost from the comforts of his father's house and his position based upon a loose primogeniture which overlooked the age of Jacob's other sons. God's ways are not our ways, and so the future ruler of Egypt will start out as a slave. The Savior will leave heaven, the comforts of perfect love and community, enter the world poor and helpless, by our own standard. He will be despised and rejected, sorrowful and acquainted with much grief. Salvation is truly of the Lord.

Now as a slave Joseph is honest, God has given him ability, and his master becomes well aware. He is elevated to charge of the house, a position that given to him, a man of great integrity, allows his master to have no worries. Potiphar can concentrate on the affairs of state knowing that his household affairs are in order. I have two fantastic leads at work and even when my health failed I knew that I could depend on them to keep things running. It is a blessing, a weight off your back, and Joseph is that for Potiphar, he has relieved much of his burden. God has used this to teach him how to serve, to be humble and yet so effective in humility that he is the natural choice for a leader. He is gaining experience.

Enter the dragon, Potiphar has a wife, and given his rank, she is probably a trophy wife, most likely a very attractive woman. She has a thing for Joseph, which would be tempting for most men, but Joseph does not reciprocate. Joseph doesn't play with fire, doesn't look for a way to justify doing what she wants, instead he flees. He takes the unpopular route, the way that sets him against the powers and principalities, he is once again disrobed, once again stripped of his dignity. She accuses him of rape, and though he has done nothing of the sort, the one who he has served faithfully now throws him in prison. I have gone through trials in my life before, but most of them I could relate to a deficiency in my own character. Where God has said, "no, that is sin, and you're My child, so here is My correction." I drank until I coughed up blood. I overdosed. My romantic relationships were all failures, and they were all for my honor, my entertainment, my lust, and they all bombed. Maybe Joseph was a little cocky as a kid, but did it justify throwing him into a pit? Did it justify selling him to slave traders and hurting your father? But now, in Egypt, what has he done other than good, other than serve? Oh that this were true of my life, that when I am accused of wrong, it is a lie, that is the better goal, a clear conscience before God. You can never take down a godly man, an honest, circumspect man, by way of his own wrong doing, so you will always have to make something up. To the next lesson, God is still grooming him and I would encourage you to read the entire of his story in Genesis but I am going to keep moving.

…14 But when it goes well for you, please remember me and show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, that he might bring me out of this prison. 15 For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing for which they should have put me in this dungeon.” Genesis 40: 14-15

He makes a good argument, if this is a place for criminals, for rapist, for the guilty, then what am I doing here? I haven't done anything to which this place was designed for, I am innocent of the accusations which are against me. I would ask, "what kind of God would allow this?" Men are quick to judge. For the same thing they would seek the highest penalty against you for, even without real witness, evidence or any legitimate proof, being guilty of the same thing or worse, they would not hold themselves to such a standard. They would think the consequence against them too severe. They would cry unfair in their own case, and so if your hope is in men, it is a false hope, it is flawed. He does good in prison though, he is again lifted to a position of respect, he is again faithful to God's moral law. Joseph is so different than me. When I was young and got a bad review, I would reason in my mind that I am now going to live up to your view of me, which means I am going to do less. He stands out as a slave and as a prisoner, he is being changed, grown, matured in God, but his resolve to do what's right is unchanging.

He helps two other prisoners interpret their dreams, one is not a happy ending, but he tells him what God says, not what the man probably wants to hear. He tells the truth and it comes to pass. The other man is in a job which is close to the Pharaoh, who is most likely very hard to work for. Pharaoh's standards are high, his word is law, but the other man is restored to his position and Joseph ask that he remember him. Of course he forgets him. Another thing about men, once they are okay, their needs are met, they forget you. God is not done however, and at the right time, the dreamer, who interpreted others dreams will now be called to memory. The chief butler will be like, "I know a guy." Joseph will interpret Pharaoh's dream, and not only that, but the dream will also lead to his new job, which God has trained him for. His new job will lead to the saving of millions of people from starvation, including his father and brothers, who live far away. This will lead to another great aspect of the doctrine of God's sovereignty. Joseph will look back upon his life and have the peace that comes with the knowledge of God's providence, of His constant care over His creation, His rule in the affairs of men. God's providence in Joseph's life will lead his estranged family to reconciliation. It will fill Joseph with compassion that overflows to a people that cannot understand it. They were guilty, his brothers would have murdered him, and he now has the power to repay them for what they did to him, but instead he forgives them. He looks back over all that happened and he acknowledges that they were wrong, but he sees God's hand and realizes something greater than revenge.

Praise the Lord! Psalm 105

A Psalm most probably of David for it shares the same composition of that in the first of the Chronicles, chapter 16.

1 Chronicles 16

Make known His deeds among the people - There is an argument, in many cultures, against the proclamation of the Creator, but surely the Bible does not support such silence. Go ye into all the world it says, and the greatest testimony is the Word of God and it's affect to and upon a new life in Christ. Without faith it is impossible to please God, it is the truth that sets men free, and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. This will be the strengthening of your own faith as well, confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Show the world love by sacrificing it's approval towards you.

Seek His presence continually - This is a command and a blessing for those that do, it is both most certainly, for it is not our natural inclination. It is dual mercy as well, that God has revealed Himself and that He has also decreed from eternity a call to all those who believe, a willing heart that is filled with a new desire to seek Him.

…10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.… Romans 3: 10-12

- To seek his face is to desire his presence, his smile, his favour consciously enjoyed. First we seek him, then his strength and then his face; from the personal reverence, we pass on to the imparted power, and then to the conscious favour. This seeking must never cease--the more we know the more we must seek to know. Finding him, we must "our minds inflame to seek him more and more." He seeks spiritual worshippers, and spiritual worshippers seek him; they are therefore sure to meet face to face ere long. - C. H. Spurgeon

Children of Jacob, His chosen ones - This should give all anxieties a great rest, as Christ standing up in the boat, saying to the disturbed waters, be still. The demons knew Him and trembled, but such is the power that is for us, we have a high priest, let us look unto Him, boldly professing the faith, speaking the truth in love. Let us not be the frozen ones.

- As we read this pointed appeal to the chosen seed we should recognise the special claims which the Lord has upon ourselves, since we too have been favoured above all others. Election is not a couch for case, but an argument for sevenfold diligence. If God has set his choice upon us, let us aim to be choice men. - C. H. Spurgeon

He remembers His covenant forever - The Psalmist will start with Abraham, but for the eternal God there is also the promise to that very part of Himself, the Son, the Living Word. The promise of Emmanuel comes early on, the seed of the woman, Whose heel is bruised, but Whose victory is crushing. Praise be to Christ forever and ever, Amen.

Since I included links, with a lot of other reading, I will stop here and continue later at verse 12.

#835.5 Splendor and Majesty Part II

Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
2 covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.
3 He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;
he makes the clouds his chariot;
he rides on the wings of the wind;
4 he makes his messengers winds,
his ministers a flaming fire.

5 He set the earth on its foundations,
so that it should never be moved.
6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
7 At your rebuke they fled;
at the sound of your thunder they took to flight.
8 The mountains rose, the valleys sank down
to the place that you appointed for them.
9 You set a boundary that they may not pass,
so that they might not again cover the earth.

10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
they flow between the hills;
11 they give drink to every beast of the field;
the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;
they sing among the branches.
13 From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
15 and wine to gladden the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine
and bread to strengthen man's heart.

16 The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,
the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
17 In them the birds build their nests;
the stork has her home in the fir trees.
18 The high mountains are for the wild goats;
the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

19 He made the moon to mark the seasons;
the sun knows its time for setting.
20 You make darkness, and it is night,
when all the beasts of the forest creep about.
21 The young lions roar for their prey,
seeking their food from God.
22 When the sun rises, they steal away
and lie down in their dens.
23 Man goes out to his work
and to his labor until the evening.

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom have you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the sea, great and wide,
which teems with creatures innumerable,
living things both small and great.
26 There go the ships,
and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.

27 These all look to you,
to give them their food in due season.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works,
32 who looks on the earth and it trembles,
who touches the mountains and they smoke!
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the Lord.
35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more!
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
Praise the Lord! Psalm 104 ESV

A Psalm proclaiming the splendor and glory of God made known through His Creation.

The rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers -

“The badger is a misnomer for the hyrax, a small and shy rock-dweller (cf. Prov. 30:26).” (Kidner)

57 As they were walking along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”… Luke 9: 57-59

He made the moon to mark the seasons - Many of the surrounding cultures subscribed to a creation story, but in falling away have became more and more polytheistic. They would hold that there was a god of the moon, a sun god (Ra), geographically divided gods of different territories, water, rain etc.., but the Hebrew poet would reform it all back to God, the Creator of all things. The seasons, the tides, the rising and setting of the sun, all part of His miraculous design, and how much further has our science allowed us to see, how much more grand it should make all of this in our eyes, God is above and in all of this.

The earth is full of Your creatures - There is so much diversity. We are the stewards of the earth, but such greedy and thankless poachers we become.
“They are all God’s property, and should be used only in reference to the end for which they were created. All abuse and waste of God’s creatures are spoil and robbery on the property of the Creator.” (Clarke)

Living things both small and great - I have always found it fascinating the way the largest of creatures, the whale, uses a baleen to feed upon some of the smallest of creatures, plankton. The invention of the microscope has revealed worlds within worlds, entire cities inside a drop of water. The surface does not even begin to reveal the complexity underneath. We are children in a vast play ground, a science class every day. I remember setting up a tank for the first time, and the man at the aquarium store explaining to me the necessity of removing the chlorine which I could not see. He went on to explain the necessity of something else I could not see, the nytrifying bacteria that were a part of the biological filtration necessary for the life and health of the fish. This would require some days of breaking in, adding a dither fish to start the ammonia cycle, which would in turn cause the bacteria to colonize the filter. Once men grasp all these things they are now able to treat the water, add the bacteria and then the fish, all in the same day. What a wonderful world.

When You send forth Your Spirit they are created -

…6 But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.… Genesis 2: 6-8

…21 Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.” 22 When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”… John 20: 21-23

May the Lord rejoice in His works - How could this be, who would say such to Him Who has declared hatred of sin, and the whole of this world infected by it? His Spirit will not always strive with man, but again we look from time and space, but He is sovereign and omniscient in that, nothing has caught Him off guard. This may well be a cry for redemption. Even the soiled universe is miraculous, beyond us and even beyond the abilities of our imagination. He has decreed the beginning to the end, how soft a pillow for the head.

“This is perhaps the highest and most daring note in all this wonderful song of praise. So impressed with the glory and wonder and beauty of creation was the singer, that he positively called upon God to rejoice in what He had wrought.” (Morgan)

“There is nothing irreverent in this. It is rather an expression of the soul’s profound understanding of what God actually feels in view of His own mighty and marvelous works.” (Morgan)

May my meditation be pleasing to Him - You, Who looks upon the heart, Who sees my every thought, please guide me even in this, let what I mistook as omission be now commission in my eyes and let me steer clear of all errors.

Keep Your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed of great transgression. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19: 13-14

22 When the sun rises, they steal away
and lie down in their dens.
23 Man goes out to his work
and to his labor until the evening.

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom have you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the sea, great and wide,
which teems with creatures innumerable,
living things both small and great.
26 There go the ships,
and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.

27 These all look to you,
to give them their food in due season.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works,
32 who looks on the earth and it trembles,
who touches the mountains and they smoke!
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

A Psalm the Vulgate and Septuagint attribute to David. An ode to the creative power of God.

Bless the Lord, O my soul - Again like the last song, in spirit and in truth. Demand all of myself, totally engaged in the act of worship, in awe of the Creator.

“The verse sums up the whole of the creative act in one grand thought. In that act the invisible God has arrayed Himself in splendour and glory, making visible these inherent attributes. That is the deepest meaning of Creation. The Universe is the garment of God.” (Maclaren)

Covering yourself with light as with a garment - The sun, the stars, the moon which reflects the radiance of the sun, all lesser lights but splendid revelations of majesty above all things majestic. There is a song we sing, "God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." There is goodness as men define such, but this is moral purity unsurpassed. The Psalmist is walking through the days of Creation, and this is as fine a meditation as any.

1 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus.… Matthew 17: 1-3

…5 For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.… 2 Corinthians 4: 5-7

Stretching out the heavens like a tent - Scientist will say that a star is thus far away, and the light we see has traveled this many light years, so what I perceive now is this old. But God, in His wisdom has declared, decreed, stretched out the heavens, and did so in a day. There are at least 11 instances in the Old Testament, in different books, that testify to God stretching out the heavens. He is eternal and controlling all of this that we can only view from inside time and space. Look into it as if from the outside of a globe, but what would you see if you turned around toward eternity? It cracks the framework of my mind, God is above all this, yet ever present in every moment of our history. We can do Him no justice with the limits of our vocabulary. The naturalist mind falls quickly into delusion, trying to reconcile and account for the age he has placed upon the universe, and much of the church today, even the New Calvinist, desire so much to have a seat with the learned, to be respected by the world, that they are more conformed then reformed. Evangelicals go about quoting that a day is like a thousand years to our Lord, but apply that time to each day, rather than evening and morning. Yes, so that we can understand that God is not late, a day is like a thousand years, but God can spread out a thousand light years in a day. You cannot magnify Him enough.

…11 Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.” 12 God made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding. 13 When He thunders, the waters in the heavens roar, and He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and brings the wind from His storehouses.… Jeremiah 10: 11-13

He makes His messengers winds - So much is happening outside of our sight, but nothing outside the sovereignty of God.

…6 And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.” 7 Now about the angels He says: “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.” 8 But about the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever, and justice is the scepter of Your kingdom.… Hebrews 1: 6-8

At Your rebuke they fled - As the setting of their place in Creation, their return and withdraw in the flood, and Who is this Christ Who says, "peace, be still?"

…2 The springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained. 3 The waters receded steadily from the earth, and after 150 days the waters had gone down. 4 On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.… Genesis 8: 2-4

…25 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” 26“You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”… Matthew 8: 25-27

The earth is satisfied by the fruit of Your work - No matter what or where the creature, God has delighted so to make it, and provide that it may live. Even in a fallen world we find reason to give thanks, looking up upon the mountains, down into the canyons, everywhere there is life, and everywhere there is reason to praise the One Who spoke it into being.

And wine to gladden the heart of man - God has been so kind as to produce, not only that which is food, but also medicine and relief. It is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but the Bible speaks to moderation, whether drunkenness, which is abuse of fermentation. Gluttony is the abuse of sustenance, and fornication, which is the abuse of God's original intent and order within the beautiful, the sacred and committed bonds of marriage. Fallen humanity can pervert anything, and will in it's depravity choose less than glorious means. Prohibition has in no way solved the abuses, and has often harmed those, who in the spirit of self control, would have made such remedies as gifts of compassion to those suffering. In my day, it is the lesser of these things, the least addictive as I know, but most helpful as I can see, cannabis, which one type of ignorance demonizes while the other overstates, mystifies or abuses. I believe in individual responsibility, truth, compassion and the honest labeling of both harm and or benefit. Greed is yet another abuse, which compromises all the good we here enjoy.

- And wine that maketh glad the heart of man. By the aid of genial showers the earth produces not merely necessaries but luxuries, that which furnishes a feast as well as that which makes a meal. O that man were wise enough to know how to use this gladdening product of the vine; but, alas, he full often turns it to ill account, and debases himself therewith. Of this he must himself bear the blame; he deserves to be miserable who turns even blessings into curses. - C. H. Spurgeon

…22 Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. 23 Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments. 24 The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later.… 1 Timothy 5: 22-24

7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil. 8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money. 9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.… 1 Timothy 3: 7-9

#834.5 10,000 Reasons Part Dos

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
14 For he knows our frame;
he remembers that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are like grass;
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children's children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul! Psalm 103 ESV

A Psalm of David continued from verse 6.

Justice for all who are oppressed - We see everything as a long time in coming, but praise be to God it is, for we were also transgressors of His holy law. Does He forget righteousness? Are those who are guilty in truth, yet freed by loop holes unjustly, still to answer? He does not forget and a thousand years are like a day.

- Justice may at times leave the courts of man, but it abides upon the tribunal of God. For this every right-minded person will bless God. Were he careless of his creature's good, did he neglect the administration of justice, did he suffer high-handed oppressors finally to escape, we should have greater reason for trembling than rejoicing; it is not so, however, for our God is a God of justice, and by him actions are weighed; he will mete out his portion to the proud and make the tyrant bite the dust, --yea, often he visits the haughty persecutor even in this life, so that "the Lord is known by the judgments which he executeth." - C. H. Spurgeon

…17 So now I pray, may the power of the Lord be magnified, just as You have declared: 18‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion, forgiving wrongdoing and rebellion. But He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He visits the iniquity of the fathers upon their children to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people, in keeping with the greatness of Your loving devotion, just as You have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.”… Numbers 14: 17-19

He will not always chide - Remember His holiness, His discipline is perfect in this as well as His forgiveness. There is much inside of me that is still not good and so His Spirit is at work in me continually, driving out evil and leading me towards righteousness. It is not like the forgiveness of men, who even after you have repented, after you have served your time or paid the penalty of your vice, they still hold a grudge. God cleans the slate, accepts us anew and changes us more and more to the image of His Son. We should not hold against a man what he no longer is. God is gracious not only to forgive, but to put us aright.

Repay us according to our iniquities - We know according to the law and sin that all we are owed is the wages of sin, which is death. He defeats even that, taking it upon Himself and setting His children free.

…20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5: 20-21

…11 After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered among the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53: 11-12

He remembers that we are dust - How careful is He in the treatment of His children. If He were to show me all of my sin at once, I could not bear the weight of it. If I were to catch even a glimpse of His holiness without the promise of Christ, the shadow of the cross, it would be utter despair, my heart would melt inside me. There would be no hope, but God considers our frailty. He shows compassion.

As for man, his days are like grass -

- A large congregation, in many-coloured attire, always reminds us of a meadow bright with many hues; and the comparison becomes sadly true when we reflect, that as the grass and its goodliness soon pass away, even so will those we gaze upon, and all their visible beauty. Thus, too, must it be with all that comes of the flesh, even its greatest excellencies and natural virtues, for "that which is born of the flesh is flesh, "and therefore is but as grass which withers if but a breath of wind assails it. Happy are they who, born from above, have in them an incorruptible seed which liveth and abideth for ever. - C. H. Spurgeon

It's place knows it no more - Such is the life of a flower, such is man. The world will not shutdown tomorrow if I go home tonight, and you could build a monument, carve in stone, but it will wear away, and eventually even that place will be no more. But this world is not my home, so don't make vane memories of me, tell tales about how good I was, when I die, tell everyone that I loved Jesus, I was the most wretched of men, but He saved me.

To those who keep His covenant -

- Children of the righteous are not, however, promised the Lord's mercy without stipulation, and this verse completes the statement of the last by adding: To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. The parents must be obedient and the children too. We are here bidden to abide by the covenant, and those who run off to any other confidence than the finished work of Jesus are not among those who obey this precept; those with whom the covenant is really made stand firm to it, and having begun in the Spirit, they do not seek to be made perfect in the flesh. The truly godly keep the Lord's commands carefully--they "remember"; they observe them practically--"to do them": moreover they do not pick and choose, but remember "his commandments" as such, without exalting one above another as their own pleasure or convenience may dictate. May our offspring be a thoughtful, careful, observant race, eager to know the will of the Lord, and prompt to follow it fully, then will his mercy enrich and honour them from generation to generation. This verse also suggests praise, for who would wish the Lord to smile on those who will not regard his ways? That were to encourage vice. From the manner in which some men unguardedly preach the covenant, one might infer that God would bless a certain set of men however they might live, and however they might neglect his laws. But the word teaches not so. The covenant is not legal, but it is holy. It is all of grace from first to last, yet it is no panderer to sin; on the contrary, one of its greatest promises is, "I will put my laws in their hearts and in their minds will I write them"; its general aim is the sanctifying of a people unto God, zealous for good works, and all its gifts and operations work in that direction. Faith keeps the covenant by looking alone to Jesus, while at the same time by earnest obedience it remembers the Lord's commandments to do them. - C. H. Spurgeon

Bless the Lord, all His works - The psalmist beckons every created being or thing to bless the Holy One. Who is like Him?

Bless the Lord, O my soul.
